At least 20 people have died and hundreds are injured after a powerful earthquake struck northern Afghanistan.

The US Geological Survey says the quake hit at a depth of 28 kilometres, near Mazar-e Sharif, which has a population of more than half a million.

Rescue teams are working to find survivors, but authorities say the death toll is likely to rise.
