Dr. Hanft shares his experiences in the podiatry field and the opportunities it has provided him. He also mentions that he is married to a podiatrist who runs a clinical research business.

Tune in to learn more about Dr. Hanft's journey and his contributions to the podiatric medicine industry! Dr. Hanft delves into the topic of risk tolerance behavior in entrepreneurship. They both agree that while some individuals may naturally possess the ability to tolerate risk, a significant portion of risk tolerance behavior is acquired through training and experience. They emphasize that individuals who can effectively compartmentalize and tolerate risk are more likely to see their entrepreneurial endeavors through to success. They explain that although everyone experiences some level of risk, those who can effectively deal with it are the ones who are able to complete their projects.

  • Ep. 159 - Brian Loder, DPM, FACFAS - Fellowship Director/Minimal Incision Surgery

Drs. Richey and Jensen welcome Dr. Brian Loder to Dean's Chat. This episode is sponsored by Bako Diagnostics!

Dr. Loder's career has been focused on student, resident, and fellowship training for the past 25 years! He was the residency director at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital from 2005-2023, where he not only trained residents, but had a clerkship program accepting students from all colleges of podiatric medicine. His work includes working with ACFAS on minimal incision training for their surgical curriculum and workshops.

Most recently, Dr. Loder became the fellowship director for the Michigan Minimal Invasive Foot and Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Fellowship. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Michigan State University – College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Loder can be reached at [email protected]

This episode highlights how fellowships in podiatric medicine are increasingly recognized as vital opportunities for mentorship and personal growth, transcending the notion of merely extending training. Dr. Brian Loder portrays the fellowship experience as a supportive environment where residents can develop their skills and confidence under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Dr. Loder emphasizes that fellowships differ fundamentally from residency programs. While residencies concentrate on the technical aspects of medical training, fellowships prioritize mentorship. He describes the fellowship as a "mentoring program," where the relationship between the fellow and faculty is more personal and interactive. This mentorship is crucial for helping fellows navigate the technical challenges of podiatric surgery and the complexities of balancing professional and personal life.

A key benefit of a fellowship is the opportunity for residents to build confidence in their abilities. Dr. Loder notes that many residents enter the fellowship feeling uncertain about their skills, as illustrated by a fellow who expressed feeling "dumber" on his first day than he had anticipated. This feeling is common, but the supportive environment of a fellowship allows residents to confront these insecurities head-on. With dedicated mentorship, they can refine their techniques and gain the assurance needed to handle complex cases independently.

A significant focus of Dr. Loder's fellowship is on Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), which has gained traction in the field of podiatric medicine. He discusses how MIS techniques can reduce trauma and improve patient outcomes, making it an attractive option for both surgeons and patients. The evolution of MIS has led to a growing demand for specialized training, and fellowships are now seen as a critical avenue for acquiring these skills.

Dr. Loder's experience with MIS began in 2010 when he recognized the potential benefits of these techniques. He emphasizes the importance of understanding anatomy and biomechanics through open procedures before transitioning to MIS. This foundational knowledge is crucial for residents to develop the necessary skills and confidence to perform surgeries effectively.

  • Ep. 157 - ABFAS Leadership - Kathy Kreiter, CEO and President, Dr. Michelle Butterworth, DPM, FACFAS

Dean's Chat host, Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey, are joined by leadership of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Ms. Kathy Kreiter, CEO, and President, Michelle Butterworth, DPM, FACFAS. Join us for a fun discussion highlighting Board Certification in foot and ankle surgery!

This Dean's Chat episode is sponsored by Bako Diagnostics!

An overview of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) from their website:

"ABFAS safeguards public health and well-being by certifying and continuously assessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of podiatric surgeons to ensure excellence in surgical care.

Our Core Purpose is to promote the health and well-being of the public.

    Our Values -

Excellence: Embracing innovation, continuous improvement, and adaptability.

Integrity: Upholding fairness and transparency in all our actions.

Quality: Committing to high standards and trustworthiness.

Service: Dedicated to serving the profession and the public.

Recognizing the need for a surgical specialty board within the field of podiatry, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) approved the creation of the National Board of Podiatric Surgery. Today, that board is called the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery® (ABFAS).

The primary function of ABFAS is to certify qualified foot and ankle surgeons. Initially, we offered a single certification in foot and ankle surgery. Today, ABFAS offers board certification in foot surgery or foot and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle (RRA) surgery.

Prior to achieving ABFAS Board Certification, candidates must become ABFAS Board Qualified in Foot Surgery or ABFAS Board Qualified in Foot and RRA Surgery. To become ABFAS Board Qualified, DPMs must complete a three-year residency program and pass ABFAS Part I Board Qualification Exams (or the equivalent Final-year In-training Exams). Once board qualified (or "board eligible"), candidates must pass the rigorous Case Review process to achieve ABFAS Board Certification.

ABFAS board-certified surgeons, called ABFAS Diplomates, engage in a process of continuous learning to remain certified through the LEAD Continuous Certification Program."

  • Ep. 152 - Clerkship Selection - Dr. Richey and Dr. Jensen discuss "Strategies and Advice"

Clerkships are so important in the podiatric medical education process. There is a good reason why they are referred to as "Audition Rotations" – Each school or college of podiatric medicine varies in the number of clerkships available – but oftentimes where students spend these month-long rotations is where they match for residency!

Please join us for discussions on all considerations for clerkships and if you have any questions please send questions to [email protected].

Dr. Jensen and Dr. Richey emphasize the importance of personalizing the externship selection process, much like financial advice, and guide students in identifying key considerations as they plan their schedules for their fourth year. Tune in for valuable insights and practical tips that can help students navigate their clerkship choices effectively.

Selecting clerkships is a deeply personal process for students, and it is essential to prioritize individual interests, support systems, and desired training areas rather than relying solely on program rankings. This approach ensures that the clerkship experience aligns with personal and professional goals, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling residency and career.

Another critical factor in choosing clerkships is the presence of support systems. This episode highlights that students with families or significant others should consider geographical locations that provide a strong social support network. For single students, the decision may be less complicated, but those with partners or families need to factor in how the move will affect their loved ones. Emotional and logistical support from family and friends can significantly impact a student's well-being during the demanding fourth year of medical school and residency.

Dr. Jensen and Dr. Richey's discussion also emphasizes the importance of obtaining a well-rounded education during clerkships. Students are advised to treat their fourth year as an educational experience rather than merely a stepping stone to residency. This mindset encourages them to seek out programs that offer a variety of training opportunities, allowing them to explore different facets of podiatric medicine. By focusing on the quality of training rather than just the prestige of a program, students can maximize their learning and skill acquisition.

Students should approach their clerkships with a mindset of learning and growth. Being open to feedback from residents and attendings can enhance their skills and demonstrate a willingness to improve. As discussed in the episode, residency programs are looking for teachable candidates, and showing that you are receptive to constructive criticism can set you apart.

    Enjoy!
