Ep. 72 EXTRA SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Marvel Writer / Editor Mark Gruenwald Tribute + Catherine Schuller Gruenwald on his legacy (plus the Marvel Bullpen, how to be an editor, comics continuity rules, and more)
This is the ABRIDGED version...
To get the FULL, UNABRIDGED conversation plus an overview of Mark's work (with 45 additional minutes), become a patron now!
This is the episode we have been waiting for! For this episode of Dear Watchers, an omniverse comic book podcast, we are joined by Catherine Schuller Gruenwald, the late wife and legacy advocate of legendary Marvel Comics writer and editor Mark Gruenwald who coined the term “omniverse”. Follow Catherine Schuller Gruenwald’s work on Instagram, Facebook or at cosplayrunway.com.
Cat shares Mark’s journey from fan to creator to Editor-In-Chief, how his approach to comics was “Monty Python meets Joseph Campbell”, the ways that Mark anticipated Marvel’s transition to film and how Mark’s Bronze Age Marvel Comics bullpen was the zaniest, silliest place you can imagine. Cat also discusses her own work bringing cosplay to the runway and how she is keeping Mark’s memory alive through her new creepy, cool, collectible and controversial “ashograph” series.
Listen to an edited interview with Cat wherever you get your podcasts. For the full, unedited interview with Cat plus an overview of Mark’s seminal works (45 minutes of bonus material!), become a subscriber for as little as $3 at DearWatchers.com and on our OMNIVERSITY bonus podcast feed.
Mark Gruenwald was a comic book writer, editor, manager, teacher, academic, researcher, sometime penciller, comedian, creator, and all around legendary human being with us until his death in 1996. Marvel series that Mark edited included The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, The Mighty Thor, Spider-Woman and seminal issues of What If. He was the co-creator of both The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and Marvel’s first limited series, Contest of Champions. Mark is also known for his lengthy tenure writing Captain America (introducing such characters as US Agent and Crossbones) and his seminal 12-issue run on Squadron Supreme.
Catherine Schuller Gruenwald is a producer, fashion designer, artist, teacher, comedian, and former plus-size model, dedicated to fostering greater diversity and inclusion on the runway and in fashion as the founder of COSMODA: The Cosplay Runway, an event showcasing a signature brand of “Cosplay Couture” at events such as New York Fashion Week. Following Mark’s untimely passing, Cat has become his legacy advocate, contributing to multiple articles about his work, adding to collected editions, organizing panels at multiple events and presenting yearly celebrations titled Mark Gruenwald Day in his native Oshkosh, WI.
