She's a Corn-fed Indiana Girl: 1926 Mal Hallett
One of the best jazz-oriented dance bands based in Boston during the pre-World War II years was led by Mal Hallett. This collector's CD includes 18 of his best recordings (programmed in chronological order from 1926-1937) plus four selections from a Vitaphone movie short in 1937 and three radio transcriptions from 1941. Teddy Grace has four vocals and other notable sidemen include Brad Gowans (on cornet, valve trombone, and clarinet), trombonist Turk Murphy (in 1936), and pianist Frankie Carle, although their roles are actually quite minor. Hallett (who plays alto on the earliest session) led a fine second-level dance orchestra whose recordings are rarely reissued.
