Round 1 is done and dusted, and if you tip like I do it was a barren and broken wasteland of rugby league. And let’s face face, it is only round one. You can’t win the comp or even lose the comp in the first round, and in many ways you can hardly judge how a team is going to finish the season on their performance in their first true matchup of the season. And there are a lot of clubs who will be looking for forgiveness from their head coaches and their fans after this weekend’s games.

So let’s look back at those matches, and see if they offered us anything in the crystal ball for the 2022 NRL premiership. Then we’ll get into this week’s Talking Point, and let’s discuss just where we sit with the obstruction rule in rugby league at the moment, and whether it could be administered better to give a fairer assessment on its impact on results through the year. And then we’ll take a look at next weekend’s fixtures and see if we can find a few more winners than I managed this weekend. All of that is coming up on the World’s least informed NRL podcast. Welcome to a brand new season of In League With the NRL. It’s 2022, hopefully we have put covid to bed, and we can have a season where there are as few interruptions as possible. On today’s first episode, I’ll give you my exclusive preview of where all of the teams are going to finish in 2022, which gives you the jump start to get onto your bookie and bet on the exact opposite of what I say. So let’s not waste any time, let’s get started with the 2022 edition of In League With the NRL!

Australia, somewhat surprisingly to some including me, won last year’s T20 World Cup, an achievement that relied heavily on players who had decided against playing any international T20’s in 2021 prior to the competition going ahead, while continuing to mine the riches of the IPL despite this. In achieving this victory, the team has set itself up for a repeat performance in this year’s T20 World Cup, which will be played in Australia during October and November.

As of the recording of this episode, Australia has won all four of their matches in the local series against the young Sri Lankan team, with both sides rotating players both due to injuries and covid infections. And while not everyone will agree, Australia’s victorious run for me has come from a combination of some good play, but also a complete lack of luck for the Sri Lankan contingent.

The current squad and performance does raise the question as to what sort of team Australia will go into the tournament with in eight months time. Given the short turnaround in tournaments, one could have been forgiven for thinking that a very similar 11 would line up in Australia’s first match that played in that final a few months ago, and yet already there are questions being asked over several members of that team, and whether or not a refreshed line up would be required, not only through current form or the lack thereof, but given the different conditions that the tournament will be played in.

On today’s program I’ll run the rule over a number of scenario’s, and as the title suggests, have a look at how Australia’s three longest serving members fit into the team as it now stands, and whether or not they will still be in the running come October.
