Theories for this riddle abound. South Africa is a very complex country, with a complex history that has been checkered with oppression, strife, and hypocrisy—largely in the name of the “state” church, which at the time was professing evangelical. In 1994, the government changed and the servant was now the master. Needless to say, there was a backlash against “White Christianity.” But, when a student-pastor from Christ Seminary understood these words from Peter, and saw a converted “enemy” from the previous regime, he went to meet his foe only to discover a brother. After they discovered and rejoiced in their “unity of mind,” they both preached together in a Township church to a full house.

Fruitfulness is an essential mark of saving faith, and since Jesus is the vine, it is impossible for true branches not to bear fruit. Thus, barren branches are removed and burned. Pruning also distinguishes dead branches from fruit-bearing branches, providing more room in the vine for the growth of the good branches. Furthermore, it prevents useless branches from breeding insects and blight that may ruin the quality of the good fruit. God desires to see not only quantity of fruit from believers, but quality as well.

Our Lord made our bodies with this seemingly insignificant member that serves such a crucial function. In the same way, He outfits His body, the church, with members who are not publicly noticeable or who do not have more visible gifts, yet are vital to the proper health of the body.

Sometimes, we will be repeatedly tested with difficult people. So, we need to develop a heart of tolerance in love. We tolerate those who at first glance are not so loveable because we know how much God loved us while yet sinners. That tolerance reflects the gospel. These qualities spoken by Paul derive from God Himself and the way He has treated us in Christ. Therefore, when we consider our checklist of tasks to accomplish each day, let us remember the character qualities that will most beautifully put on display the gospel for all to see. This is how we walk in a manner worthy of our blessed and inestimable calling of salvation.

Temptations are common to all mankind. If others have succeeded, so can we. The ability to defeat such temptations comes from God, who remains faithful, never allowing them to be greater than the strength He provides. He always provides a way to escape and thus succeed.

Fortunately, God foresaw the way to liberation from sin: confession. The word “confess” means “to say the same thing, to agree.” To confess sin means to agree with God’s evaluation of sin, to acknowledge oneself as sinful and deserving of punishment.

Consider this definition of the gospel: God the Father sent the Son freely, generously, under no external coercion, in order to meet the needs of others. True Christian giving will follow a similar pattern. As we respond to the gospel, by imitating the character of God, it is important that we consider how we will participate in the ministry of giving, thereby manifesting the grace of God in our lives. It is our privilege to care for others, and to support God’s work, by offering up that with which we have been entrusted.

How valuable this truth is when you live in an area like Croatia where Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion. Every day, people attempt to repeat the sacrifice of Christ. This is why the church needs to believe and proclaim clearly: “Christ did it all by one offering for all time!”

Leaders must identify men who are faithful and able to teach others. Paul repeats these qualities in 1 Timothy 3:2, where he writes that an elder should be above reproach and able to teach. It is important for our church leadership to have these qualities so that they can discharge their responsibility of training up the next generation.
