As a musician and self-confessed perfectionist, practice practice practice comes with the territory. But how much does practice really matter?

My music pupils often ask me how much they should be practising their instrument and for me the answer is simple, and even though in my lifetime as a musician I’ve clocked up thousands of hours of practice, where has it led me? And what can we learn from this structured repetition? Does it change how we really feel, ‘Deep Down’?

In this, my debut introductory episode of Deep Down, I explore the pain of starting (again), why it's so difficult to make a start, and what happens when we finally do. I also reveal one of the most difficult episodes of my musical career so far and just how long it’s taken me to move on.
