God’s Word does not only reveal what He wants to add to our lives. It also exposes what must be removed.
In this devotion from James 1:21, Pastor Kent examines the command to “lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness.” Sin must not be renamed, excused, managed, or protected. When God’s Word exposes bitterness, pride, immorality, anger, compromise, or any other attitude and behaviour that contradicts the life of Christ within us, the proper response is confession, repentance, and obedience.
We do not turn from sin to earn God’s love or become His children. We lay it aside because, through Christ, God has already brought us into new life. A believer may struggle with sin, but must never become comfortable with it.
We cannot welcome God’s Word while holding tightly to what His Word tells us to release.
