The first case study of the podcast examines the 23 year investigation into the disappearance of Kristin Smart, drawing insight from the extensive information provided in the Your Own Backyard podcast. Discussed are Flores’ red flag behaviours, as well as how others in his life experienced him. Also included is a brief examination of intersectional factors in missing cases to be explored in future episodes.

The third episode of Defining Deviant reviews the definitions of the eight common paraphilic disorders: Exhibitionism, Fetishism, Frotteurism, Voyeurism, Pedophilia, Sadism, Masochism, and Transvestic Fetishism. Also discussed are hebephilia, infibulation, necrophilia within the context of sexually motivated homicide, and “other” paraphilias.

The second episode of Defining Deviant discusses sociological theories of deviance and how such theories can be used to conceptualize various human behaviours. The sexual crimes of Roman Polanski and the role that privilege and status play in legal outcomes is explored. Considered are the voices of survivors, and the question of whether a single definition of justice exists.

The first episode of Defining Deviant addresses human sexuality within the context of history. Crystal introduces herself, her plan for the podcast, and some basic historical information related to sexuality and the themes we will see through the 20th and 21st century. Included as part of the discussion are religious influences, the changing role of women, and the perpetual waves of repression and acceptance related to sexuality.
