Have you ever made a decision or a plan that you were sure it was going to work out, only to realize that now you have a new set of problems because of the initial decision you've made?
Similar to investing, have you ever invested in a company that you thought was so good and strong but only to question yourself later on, "why on earth did I even buy the stock?"
If that's you then you're gonna love this episode.
You see, things do not always appear as they seem. Sometimes when we solve one problem, we end up unintentionally creating another one that’s even worse.
The same applies to investing. Investing is not something that is predictable. Regardless of how confident you are with your investment, there is always a possibility of it going against your prediction. That is why a lot of people consider investing as risky because they have no control over what's going to happen. Even a good company can go down.
On top of that, most investors' decisions tend to be biased. We first like a company and only then try to evaluate why we like it.
So what happens is, instead of analyzing businesses in a rational way, which is to gather evidence, analyze and evaluate the evidence and then decide. What we do is we gather evidence, use the evidence to confirm our mental story (why we think the company is good) and then we match the story to possible decisions.
And that can often be a problem for investors.
According to Ray Dalio, he said this
“Failing to consider second and third-order consequences is the cause of a lot of painfully bad decisions, and it is especially deadly when the first inferior option confirms your own biases. Never seize on the first available option, no matter how good it seems, before you’ve asked questions and explored.”
That is why, the best way to making any decision, whether it's your business decision, life decision, investment decision, it's best to use second-order thinking, which is what we will be discussing in today's episode.
So don't miss out! I'm sure you're gonna love it!
