Stage 2 of motivational Interviewing is Contemplation.  Contemplation is when the client starts realizing that the change they want to see is possible and attainable.  Stage 3 is Preparation when we help them to start process through next steps to get to where they want to go next.   So how do we help them? Motivational Interviewing is a tool to help push the client enough to lead to change, but not to push too hard. 

Stage 1 is Precontemplation - the client doesn't like where they are, but they are comfortable and don't really want to change yet.
