God promised the Church. But he didn't promise a singular institution.

Have you ever met someone who had a strong opinion about a controversial topic? For instance, someone might believe in reincarnation, a woman's right to abortion for any reason, the need for reparations for descendants of American slaves, freedom of speech, the legitimacy of socialism/communism, the need for unity among Christian denominations, illegal immigration, the right to free healthcare, medical benefits, and food assistance, perverse views about human sexuality, that evolution is the best explanation for how we got here, the right to defend your family with a deadly weapon, how to raise a family, or who is the best college football team. All of these ideas have been expressed by different people at different times, but are they right?

What did Isaiah do when he saw the LORD "high and lifted up"? He cried out, "Woe is me! for I am undone." What did John do on Patmos, the same man who had leaned on His breast at supper and asked "Lord, who is it?" He "fell at his feet as dead." Ask what terrible means when it is said of God, and ask how a man will stand when the Lord Jesus Christ comes as the lion and not as the lamb. "For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth."

When the Lord Jesus Christ speaks of "every branch in me that beareth not fruit", is He speaking of a believer, or of a man who only looked like one? Read the words "in me" all through the Gospel of John and ask whether they ever describe anyone but a man joined to Him by faith. Then ask what it is to abide, and whether a man who stops continuing in His Word still abides in Him. "Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit."

Is God one refuge a man runs to after everything else has failed him, or is He the refuge? Ask why the very first word of this Psalm is the name of God, and why a man waits for trouble before he runs there. Read the word "very" set in front of present help, and ask how present that is. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
