The biggest tragedy of mental illness occurs when a person’s value and humanity is denied based on a diagnosis.

Far too often people disappear beneath their label and no one comes to find them.

Whether because we dont understand how devastating mental illness can be or because we simply dont know what to do.

We MUST dig deep, and find the human beneath the diagnosis.

Humans all have inherent value and worth. We all deserve to be found.

This is how people die from mental illness and suicide: their soul, the essence of their humanity, drains out until their body follows. Often without notice.

As the semi depressed and anxious wife of a man with schizoaffective and PTSD, I’ve found that the surest way to make a difference is to start with individuals - make people care.

But they cant care if they dont know so we must use our voices to help stand in the gap for those who cant.  We must learn and educate ourselves to erase stigma.

Only then can we create an environment where the 1 in 5 americans who deal with mental illness and their loved ones, can get help, treatment, and hope.

Life mental with mental illness may not be pretty but it can be beautiful.
