  • Why Your Interior Design Business Feels Stuck. and the Order To Fix It

    Send us Fan Mail

Your interior design business isn’t stuck because you lack talent. It’s stuck because it’s being built in the wrong order.

You’d never let a contractor hang the pendant lights before the first fix. So why are so many interior designers, home stagers and stylists building their businesses that way?

In this episode of Design Boss Dialogue, the interior design business podcast for women, business mentor and award-winning studio owner Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui reveals the order mistake she sees in almost every designer who comes to her, and why more courses, more content and more posting won’t fix it.

Using real on-site examples every designer will recognise, Lisa-Marie shows how the same domino effect that derails a renovation is quietly derailing your design business: the quiet months, the cash flow gaps, the scope creep, the discounting, and the sick feeling after sending a proposal.

    In this episode, you’ll discover:
✦ Why “I can do the design, I just need the business to work” is the most common struggle in interior design
✦ The information buffet: why more advice is leaving designers more stuck, not less
✦ The kitchen that doesn’t fit: what happens when you build your brand before your positioning
✦ The socket nobody planned: how undefined services create scope creep
✦ The decorator before the second fix: why visibility before pricing leads to discounting
✦ How one thing done out of order creates feast or famine, cash flow gaps and burnout
✦ Three principles of order: clarity before visibility, pricing before promotion, process before growth
✦ The one mistake almost every designer makes: fixing the business from the outside in

This episode is for you if:
You’re a talented interior designer, home stager or stylist who’s working hard, but your pricing changes with every client, enquiries come and go, and you’re not sure what to focus on next.

Why is my interior design business stuck?
Most interior design businesses stall not because of talent, but because they’re built from the outside in: branding, marketing and visibility before positioning, pricing and process are in place. When the foundations come first, everything built on top of them starts to work.

    Send us Fan Mail

Why does your interior design business still have an empty diary, even with a beautiful Instagram feed and consistent posting? In this episode of the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside - host Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui explains the difference between the foundations and the scaffolding of a design business. She also explains why building them in the wrong order is one of the biggest reasons interior designers stay underpaid, overworked and stuck in feast or famine.

Drawing on 16 years running an award-winning interior design studio and seven years in property development, Lisa-Marie uses the building-site analogy to show why so many designers put the scaffolding up first: the content, the marketing, the beautiful Instagram grid, on ground that’s never actually been dug out. She walks through the six foundations every interior design business needs, what each one is, and why your business can’t stand without it, before explaining what scaffolding really is, and why the same marketing produces completely different results once there’s something solid underneath it.

If you’ve ever scrolled other designers’ pages and found yourself borrowing their voice, their captions or their packages, this episode will show you exactly why, and what’s really missing underneath your brand.

    In This Episode:

    • The difference between foundations and scaffolding in an interior design business
    • Why interior designers build scaffolding first, and why visibility only amplifies what’s already there
    • The six foundations of a design business: purpose, positioning, golden thread, ideal client and ideal buyer, processes, and services and pricing
    • Why your “why” is the reason clients choose you over an equally talented designer
    • How positioning takes you out of the race to compete on price and portfolio
    • Why your golden thread is the one thing no other designer can copy
    • The difference between your ideal client and your ideal buyer, and why it explains lovely engagement with an empty diary
    • Why pricing sits last in the foundations, not first
    • The carbon copy trap: how interior designers slowly become “another designer on the shelf”
    • What scaffolding really is: marketing, momentum, brand ecosystem, and sales and visibility roadmaps
    • A five-question honest check to see whether you’ve built foundations or just scaffolding
    • Why foundations can’t be built from a checklist

Ready to Build Your Foundations Properly?
Lisa-Marie is opening just 3 spaces in her 12-month one-to-one mentorship, starting January 2027. Together, you’ll lay your foundations through her six-pillar Micro to Mighty framework, then build the scaffolding that keeps your business moving. An extended payment plan is open this month only.

  • Ep 104 | The Six Hidden Patterns Quietly Running Your Design Business and How to Break Them Before 2027

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside, host Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui reveals the six hidden patterns that quietly run most interior design, home staging and styling businesses, and exactly how to break them before 2027.

Most interior designers believe they’re running their own business. In reality, invisible habits of thinking and behaving are often making the decisions: what you charge, which clients you say yes to, whether you show up or hide, and whether you send a proposal with confidence or feel sick waiting for a reply. Drawing on 16 years running an award-winning interior design studio and mentoring hundreds of designers, Lisa-Marie names each pattern, shows what it’s really costing your design business, and gives you a practical way to stop it.

From waiting for permission and giving design work away for free, to emotional pricing, offering too many services, feast-or-famine marketing and running everything from your head, this episode will help you see your patterns clearly, and make the decision that changes how your interior design business runs in 2027.

    In This Episode:

    • Why most interior design businesses are run by patterns, not by the woman who owns them
    • The Permission Pattern: why waiting for a qualification, portfolio or “readiness” keeps you underpriced
    • The Free Work Pattern: how over-delivering and unpaid follow-on work trains your market to pay you less
    • The Proposal Panic Pattern: emotional pricing, discounting, and why your fee should be a calculation, not a guess
    • The Everything Offer Pattern: why offering staging, styling, design and sourcing all at once makes you forgettable
    • The Reactive Pattern: how feast-or-famine marketing keeps your interior design pipeline unstable
    • The “It’s All In My Head” Pattern: why a business without a written client journey can never grow beyond you
    • The single root underneath all six patterns, and why information alone won’t fix it
    • The 2027 decision: two versions of your design business, and what separates them

  • EP 103: Four Pricing Models Everyone’s Teaching You (And Why Three of Them Are Keeping You Broke)

    Send us Fan Mail

How should interior designers price their services? In this episode of the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside, host Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui breaks down the four interior design pricing models taught across the industry, and reveals why only one of them is built to hold a real, moving interior design project and take a design business past six figures.

Hourly rates, flat-fee bundles, tiered pricing ladders and staged pricing structures are all being taught to interior designers right now, often repackaged with a nicer font and presented as the answer. Lisa-Marie walks through each one honestly: why hourly rates punish you for getting better at your job, why bundling a consultation, layout, concept and design review into one flat fee isn’t pricing at all, and why a pricing ladder is a menu, not a matrix.

She then shares the staged interior design pricing matrix she teaches, separating design direction, procurement and trade coordination into distinct stages, each with its own fee, margin and purpose. It’s the same pricing foundation that took her own award-winning studio from £75,000 to £250,000 in a single financial year, and has generated £1.3 million in collective client revenue across the interior designers she mentors.

Finally, Lisa-Marie explains the piece most pricing advice misses entirely: why a pricing structure only holds when the mindset underneath it does too.

    In This Episode:

    • The four interior design pricing models most designers are taught, and which one actually scales
    • Why hourly rates cap your income and punish you for becoming more efficient
    • What your hourly rate really needs to cover: overheads, non-billable time, tax, software and admin
    • Why flat-fee bundling (consultation, layout, concept and design review for one price) leaves interior designers with nowhere to go when scope changes
    • The pricing ladder explained: why tiered good/better/best packages solve client choice but not profitability
    • Why so many interior design businesses hit a ceiling around £50,000 to £60,000
    • The staged pricing matrix: separating design direction, procurement and trade coordination
    • How a staged structure absorbs scope creep instead of eating your profit
    • Layering margin through procurement, window dressings, installation and delivery fees
    • Why pricing is both a numbers conversation and a nervous system conversation
    • How emotional pricing and money mindset quietly sabotage even the best pricing structure

  • Ep 102 The Power of Implementation over Information and why AI can't replace you as a Interior Designer

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside, host Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui unpacks one of the biggest shifts facing interior designers right now: clients using AI tools like ChatGPT to research renovation costs, benchmark quotes, and even sense-check an interior designer's pricing before committing to a project.

We live in a world where information is no longer scarce. Anyone can type a question into AI and receive a well-structured answer in seconds, a rough renovation budget, inspiration imagery, even a judgement on whether a quote "seems reasonable." But information was never actually what clients were paying an interior designer for. In this episode, Lisa-Marie breaks down the real distinction between information and implementation, why that gap is the entire reason interior design expertise still matters, and exactly how to respond with confidence when a client arrives holding AI-generated numbers, or runs your own quote through a chatbot to validate it.

This episode also draws the same parallel from the coaching and mentoring industry, because the pattern is identical. Access to information doesn't create transformation, implementation does. Whether you're an interior designer navigating AI-informed clients or a service-based business owner feeling the pressure of client "research," this episode will help you reposition your value with total confidence.

    In This Episode:

    • Why information is no longer scarce, and why that was never where your real value as an interior designer sat
    • The real difference between information and implementation, explained through a simple analogy
    • Why a client's AI-generated renovation estimate puts them at risk of wasting time and money
    • What's really happening when a client runs your quote through ChatGPT to "sense-check" it
    • How to respond when a client uses AI to validate or challenge your pricing, without sounding defensive
    • A simple, confident script for repositioning the conversation from price to transformation
    • Why decision fatigue, not lack of information, is the real problem most clients (and most business owners) face
    • The psychology AI can't replicate: reading a client's emotional language and mirroring it back to build trust
    • The same pattern in coaching and mentoring — why more information was never the same as a real roadmap
    • Where AI genuinely helps interior designers and their clients (and where it falls short every time)

  • Ep 101 Interior Designer vs Business Owner, the void that's costing you growth.

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside, host Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui names something most designers have felt but never had language for: the void between being an interior designer and becoming an interior design business owner.

So many talented women start their interior design business the same way. They're brilliant at transforming spaces, they've done their own home, friends and family keep telling them "you need to make a living out of this"  so they put a few schemes together, learn Canva, maybe complete a diploma or a design degree, and think they're ready to get clients. What nobody tells them is that a void opens up right there a gap filled with self-doubt, self-limiting beliefs, and imposter syndrome, sitting directly in the way of real interior design business growth.

Lisa-Marie breaks down exactly why this happens using her Ladder concept the interior designer at the bottom, the interior design business owner at the top and her Arc of Opportunity framework, explaining why so many designers experience feast-or-famine cycles in their interior design business because they've never built a genuine pipeline.

This episode also goes further than strategy alone. Lisa-Marie unpacks the internal energetics and mindset work required alongside the practical foundations purpose and clarity, brand visibility, sales systems, workflows, boundaries, and leadership and shares real, unfiltered results from the interior design business owners she's mentored since April 2024, including designers who've gone from under £24k across two years to over £85k in a single financial year, and others now approaching their first £120k in business.

If you've ever felt like you've hit a ceiling in your interior design business, or wondered why some designers seem to build momentum while others stay stuck year after year, this episode will change how you see your next move.

    In This Episode:

    • What "the void" actually is and why it's the real reason most interior design businesses stall
    • UK business failure statistics every interior design business owner should understand
    • The Ladder concept: interior designer vs. interior design business owner
    • The Arc of Opportunity and why so many designers experience feast and famine in their interior design business
    • Why energetics, mindset, and self-confidence are just as critical as strategy for interior design business growth
    • The six foundations every interior design business owner needs: purpose and clarity, brand visibility, sales systems, workflows and process, structure and boundaries, and purposeful leadership
    • Real client results: how designers went from stagnant for years to £85k+ years and approaching £120k in their interior design business
    • Why the cost of not structuring your interior design business properly is often invisible — until it isn't

    A Special Announcement:

This week, Lisa-Marie is running one of the biggest interior design business bootcamps to date, with over 600 women already signed up. On Wednesday 23rd, an exclusive invitation will go out to a select group just 10% of those enrolled — for the next stage of their interior design business journey.

If you haven't joined the bootcamp but know you're ready to build real structure into your interior design business, Lisa-Marie currently has one final 1:1 mentorship space remaining in her 2026 diary twelve months of dedicated support inside your business.

  • Ep 100 Ready for more, unlocking your next level of growth, with Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui

    Send us Fan Mail

In this milestone one hundredth episode of the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside — host Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui marks the podcast's journey from zero downloads in December 2024 to over 12,000 downloads worldwide, before diving into one of the most important conversations yet: what's actually blocking your interior design business growth.

Because when we think about growing an interior design business, we tend to think: more clients, more projects, more visibility, more revenue. Basically, more everything. But after sixteen years in business, Lisa-Marie shares the lesson that changes everything — more doesn't necessarily mean growth. Sometimes more clients simply means more work. More revenue can mean very little extra profit. And more visibility doesn't mean you're attracting the right people.

In this episode, Lisa-Marie breaks down the four areas she comes back to again and again when assessing an interior design business: positioning, pricing, pipeline, and process — and challenges listeners to identify exactly which one is quietly capping their own growth.

If you've ever felt like you're working harder than ever but the results still don't reflect it, this episode will help you see your interior design business with completely fresh eyes.

    In This Episode:

    • Why "more" doesn't automatically mean growth in an interior design business
    • The uncomfortable positioning question: could your business belong to anybody else?
    • What your Zone of Uniqueness actually is — and why women often dismiss their biggest strength
    • Why doubling your revenue might mean fewer projects, not more
    • The pricing guilt that quietly caps interior design business income
    • The Arc of Opportunity — why most designers build a pipeline that starts from zero every time
    • Why process is what allows positioning, pricing, and pipeline to actually hold as your interior design business grows
    • The real question underneath this milestone episode: are you ready for more?

    A Special Thank You:

This episode marks 100 episodes of Design Boss Dialogue — a podcast that started in December 2024 with zero downloads and zero followers, and has since reached over 12,000 downloads across the globe. Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast — the interior design business podcast for women ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside — host Lisa-Marie Elkhadraoui breaks down how to handle client pricing objections, build trust in every interior design consultation, and stop over-explaining your fees.

A client asks about your markup. Questions why something costs so much. Wants to see the trade invoice. In interior design business, this moment happens to almost every designer — and most of us respond the same way: we tense up, we over-explain, and we start justifying a number instead of standing behind it.

Lisa-Marie reframes exactly what's happening in that moment, and why it has almost nothing to do with money. You'll learn why pricing questions in interior design consultations are really trust questions in disguise, why a vague client process invites pushback while a clear, structured interior design business process prevents it, and the exact language and pacing to use the next time a client questions your interior design fees.

This episode also unpacks why trust in an interior design business isn't built at the invoice stage — it's built from the very first client enquiry, all the way through to installation. If you've ever felt yourself shrinking in a client pricing conversation, this episode on interior design business psychology and client trust will change how you show up in every future consultation.

    In This Episode:

    • Why every pricing question from an interior design client is really a trust question wearing a money costume
    • Where client scepticism about interior design costs actually comes from — and why it's rarely personal
    • How a clear, structured interior design client process removes the need to ever defend your fee
    • The exact language to use when a client questions your interior design pricing
    • Why over-explaining your interior design fees makes you sound less certain, not more convincing
    • The power of the pause — how to close a pricing conversation without reopening client doubt
    • Why your net cost was never the point in interior design business — what you deliver is

  • Ep 98: Lighter Not Smaller

    Send us Fan Mail

Welcome back to the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women who are ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside.

I want to start this episode with something that might feel like quite a bold statement:

Business does not need to be hard.

Yes, growth can be uncomfortable. There will always be moments that stretch you, challenge you and require you to step into a bigger version of yourself. But there is a huge difference between the purposeful discomfort of growth and running a business that feels relentlessly difficult simply because everything is being held together by your own effort.

After 16 years in the interior design and build industry, and through the work I now do mentoring women inside their own businesses, I've become incredibly passionate about two things that I believe sit at the heart of creating greater ease: your zone of genius and your golden thread.

Your zone of genius isn't simply something you're good at. You might be perfectly capable of managing admin, chasing invoices, wrestling with spreadsheets or handling every tiny detail inside your business, but being capable of doing something doesn't mean you should be spending your best energy there.

Your zone of genius is the part of what you do that feels almost instinctive. It's where your talent, energy and natural ability meet. For an interior designer, that might be your creative vision, your ability to read a space, the relationships you build with your clients or the way you instinctively understand what a home needs.

When you spend too much of your time operating miles outside that space, business naturally starts to feel heavier.

In this episode, I'm exploring how we can begin building structure around our businesses that protects our zone of genius, whilst systemising or delegating the things that don't need our unique energy.

And then we come to your golden thread: that unmistakable piece of positioning that makes somebody think of your name first.

Because I don't believe the answer to standing out in a crowded interior design market is simply more. More content, more posting, more visibility, more hustle. The answer is becoming more unmistakably you.

When you understand what you want to be known for and allow that thread to run consistently through your marketing, your brand, your client experience and everything you put into the world, recognition starts to compound. Eventually, your positioning begins doing some of the work that previously required constant effort from you.

That's where business begins to feel lighter.

Not because your ambition has become smaller, but because you're no longer the only thing holding the entire business up.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • Why business doesn't need to feel relentlessly hard
    • The difference between growth discomfort and unnecessary struggle
    • What your zone of genius actually is
    • Why being good at something doesn't necessarily make it your genius
    • How working outside your zone of genius creates exhaustion
    • Creating structures that support rather than drain you
    • Why ease isn't the same as laziness or luck
    • How solid business foundations create sustainable momentum
    • What Lisa means by your “golden thread”
    • Why doing more isn't necessarily the answer to standing out
    • How positioning helps you become unmistakable in a crowded interior design market
    • Why recognition and reputation compound over time
    • The relationship between structure, alignment, momentum and ease
    • How to recognise whether you're experiencing healthy growth or simply unnecessary hardship

As you listen, I want you to ask yourself three questions:

Where am I making business harder than it actually needs to be?

Where am I spending too much time outside my zone of genius?

And do I really know what my golden thread is yet?

Because ease isn't about shrinking your ambition, caring less or building a smaller business.

It's about building enough structure underneath your business that you no longer have to hold everything up through effort, grit and willpower alone.

The more aligned your business becomes, the lighter it can begin to feel.

Welcome back to the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women who are ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside.

Have you ever found yourself saying yes to an interior design project and then, a few weeks or months later, wondering whether you should ever have taken it on in the first place?

Maybe the budget wasn't quite right. The expectations didn't align with the service you actually offer. The revisions started creeping in, communication became harder than it needed to be, or you simply had that feeling that the client wasn't quite the right fit.

We can be very quick to label these situations as difficult clients, bad luck or scope creep, but in this episode I want to take you much further back in the client journey and look at what was happening before that person ever became a client.

Because one of the biggest shifts you can make in your interior design business is moving away from relying entirely on instinct and introducing processes that help you attract, filter and qualify the right people from the very beginning.

So many designers are learning as they go. Someone sends a message on Instagram or completes a vague contact form and suddenly you're on a discovery call trying to establish the project scope, budget, timescale, expectations and whether you actually want to work together, all whilst trying to be warm, professional and reassuring.

That's an enormous amount of decision-making to put into one conversation.

In this episode, I'm sharing how your marketing, messaging, enquiry process and discovery calls can begin doing that filtering for you, so you're not approaching every enquiry as a completely fresh decision.

We'll talk about how specific messaging attracts more specific enquiries, the questions your enquiry form should be asking before someone reaches your diary, and why a structured discovery call isn't about becoming scripted or impersonal. It's about giving both you and your prospective client the clarity to decide whether you're genuinely right for one another.

Because the goal isn't simply to attract more interior design clients.

It's to attract better aligned clients who understand your value, respect your process and want the type of service you actually love delivering.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • Why relying entirely on instinct can create decision fatigue in your interior design business
    • How the absence of a filtering process can lead to misaligned clients and projects
    • Why your marketing and messaging are the first stage of client qualification
    • How specific messaging can attract more confident, aligned enquiries
    • What your interior design enquiry form should establish before a discovery call
    • Why budget, project scope, timescale and expectations need to be explored early
    • How to structure discovery calls without making them feel rigid or scripted
    • Why saying yes from clarity is very different from saying yes through fear or social pressure
    • How stronger processes can reduce scope creep, friction and difficult client relationships
    • Why the right business structure can create more ease, rather than more work

I want you to look at your own client journey after listening to this episode and ask yourself: are my processes genuinely filtering for the clients I want, or are there leaks in my business that are allowing misalignment through?

Because business doesn't have to feel hard simply because you're growing.

There will always be stretches, challenges and moments of discomfort, but ease isn't something you have to earn after years of struggle. When the structure underneath your business starts doing its job properly, you create space for better clients, stronger boundaries and a business that feels much lighter to lead.
