DesignLab University of Twente is not just celebrating their 10-year
anniversary. This year, we can also congratulate Klaasjan Visscher, DesignLab’s
scientific co-director and programme director of the Transdisciplinary Master-
Insert ‘Shaping Responsible Futures’ (check out episode 3!), as he has been
appointed Professor of Innovation in Higher Education & Society at the BMS
Faculty. In this episode, Klaasjan talks about how innovation has become an
essential part of education throughout the years, and transdisciplinary
education serving as a new, effective, approach. This might be the final
episode, but educational innovation does not stop here. Let’s co-shape the
futures of educational innovation!
In this special edition of the DesignLab Brew podcast, DreamTeamers Henrietta
Lukàcs and Pablo San Gregorio take you with them in what Educational
Innovation means to DesignLab, in an era where adapting our education to
changing societal and technological landscapes is the only way to make it more
effective, relevant and accessible to all students.
ChallengeLAB Twente: A programme that connects creative thinkers and makers
from ROC van Twente, University of Twente, AKI ArtEZ and Saxion. In mixed
teams, they work on societal challenges within the municipalities of Enschede
and Hengelo. Project leader Eric Wolkotte informs about how this initiative
started on a national and regional level (with EnschedeLAB), and how the
current programme is designed, that can bring different perspectives and
possible solutions for the Twente region.

There’s no better way to innovate the educational system than doing so with
students and teachers who are part of it. Making the curriculum challengingbased
and involving the different societal stakeholders who can also learn and
further develop their solutions with the help of education, was the founding
idea behind the Transdisciplinary Master-Insert ‘Shaping Responsible Futures’,
hosted by DesignLab University of Twente. Assistant professor and teacher
Corelia Baibarac-Duignan and Educational coordinator (and alumnus!) Mats van
Dalen elaborate on the essence of this ‘TDMI’ programme.

Join us as we dive into the University of Twente’s presence at Dutch Design Week in 2023. Arash and Riki interview Alexandru, the project lead for “What’s on your Menu?” or “The Cookery” installation. The Cookery was sent to represent our university at DDW 2023. We will see the journey from the inception of the idea to a working installation displayed at Dutch Design Week: everything from the challenges to the opportunities to the future. It is a culmination of DesignLab’s research, philosophy, and a lot of hard work from the team who were: Alexandru-Lucian Amariei, Julieta Matos-Castaño, Cristina Zaga, Jamila Blokzijl, María Cobo Muñoz, Kris Pals-Krukkert, Xian Bodelon Ruibal, Cristina Ionas, Laura Maskanceva, Rayhan Aryoseno Bayuaji, Jorge Davo Sainz, Pablo San Gregorio, Thijs Bianchi, Leon Peters, Lars van der Werf, Juliet Haarman, Roelof de Vries, Emiel Harmsen, Hermie Hermens, Dirk Heylen, Arjen van Assem, Maartje Huinink, Wiro Kuipers and Kristina Matyushina.
Are you interested in the intersection of design, technology and the human experience? Then get ready to learn about his groundbreaking work in empowering neurodiverse users through innovative technologies and co-design methodology. Join our hosts Chiara Poli Reghenzi and Gemma Ciabattoni as they explore the cutting-edge research of Jelle van Dijk, a design researcher with a PhD in industrial design and a background in cognitive science.
What is an artificial womb and how can it reshape our human experience?

n the second episode of the Designlab Brew podcast our hosts Carithea Richards and Gemma Ciabattoni dive in the fascinating speculative design work of Lisa Mandemaker. Lisa studied at the Royal College of Art in London, and was nominated in BBC's list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2019.
Her recent work has explored motherhood and artificial wombs, creating immersive experiences that allow the public to imagine a future where children are borne out of machines. Her most recent exhibition, “monuments for m/otherhood” was one of the installations that the University of Twente brought to Dutch Design Week 2022.
What is it like to have been at the University of Twente for over 34 years? What of this experience will you take with you as you move to become Rector Magnificus at the University of Amsterdam?
These are some of the questions our hosts Riki Ogawa and Twan Wildeboer asked Peter-Paul Verbeek in the first episode of the DesignLab Brew podcast. Peter-Paul studied philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Twente, and then pursued an academic career in the field, spearheading his technological mediation theory and eventually leading the philosophy department at the University.
In this interview, we explore his career in Twente, his childhood dream of becoming a pianist, how he’s preparing for his new role in Amsterdam and his advice for students looking for their direction in life.
What do Dreamteamers do besides hosting shifts and tours at Designlab? What do Citizen Science, Trandisciplinarity and Responsible Futuring have to do with DesignLab? And how does serious gaming add to these values? For a few years, former DreamTeamer Nefeli Kousi worked with members of RRI2SCALE, a European project, on a serious game meant to give users a chance to role play in societal challenges. Cari and Gemma offer themselves as players of the Scenario Exploration System tool. Give it a listen!
