DesignLab University of Twente is not just celebrating their 10-year
anniversary. This year, we can also congratulate Klaasjan Visscher, DesignLab’s
scientific co-director and programme director of the Transdisciplinary Master-
Insert ‘Shaping Responsible Futures’ (check out episode 3!), as he has been
appointed Professor of Innovation in Higher Education & Society at the BMS
Faculty. In this episode, Klaasjan talks about how innovation has become an
essential part of education throughout the years, and transdisciplinary
education serving as a new, effective, approach. This might be the final

ChallengeLAB Twente: A programme that connects creative thinkers and makers
from ROC van Twente, University of Twente, AKI ArtEZ and Saxion. In mixed
teams, they work on societal challenges within the municipalities of Enschede
and Hengelo. Project leader Eric Wolkotte informs about how this initiative

What is an artificial womb and how can it reshape our human experience?

n the second episode of the Designlab Brew podcast our hosts Carithea Richards and Gemma Ciabattoni dive in the fascinating speculative design work of Lisa Mandemaker. Lisa studied at the Royal College of Art in London, and was nominated in BBC's list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2019.

Her recent work has explored motherhood and artificial wombs, creating immersive experiences that allow the public to imagine a future where children are borne out of machines. Her most recent exhibition, “monuments for m/otherhood” was one of the installations that the University of Twente brought to Dutch Design Week 2022.

What is it like to have been at the University of Twente for over 34 years? What of this experience will you take with you as you move to become Rector Magnificus at the University of Amsterdam?

These are some of the questions our hosts Riki Ogawa and Twan Wildeboer asked Peter-Paul Verbeek in the first episode of the DesignLab Brew podcast. Peter-Paul studied philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Twente, and then pursued an academic career in the field, spearheading his technological mediation theory and eventually leading the philosophy department at the University.

In this interview, we explore his career in Twente, his childhood dream of becoming a pianist, how he’s preparing for his new role in Amsterdam and his advice for students looking for their direction in life.
