You've heard me say it before and again - There's no such thing as the justice system; It's the legal system.
On this episode, I ask my brother to rewind to his childhood and share the lasting effects of his experiences with law enforcement and the legal system. There's even a bit about Darius McCrary in it.
Everyone has bad days. Getting arrested and not knowing why can make a bad day much worse. Even worse still - getting arrested and purposefully placed in a place that is actively dealing with a widespread health issue.
Fake it until you make it... out of jail, that is. John finds a way to bust himself out of custody, but his methods leave him facing even more jail time in the light of his own mortality.
**Legal system tip - If unable to appear in court, a criminal defendant may request that their lawyer or public defender be allowed to appear on their behalf.
This can be very useful and help free you up to handle various other obligations, but can carry its own risk of being deemed a failure to appear if the judge isn't on board. Communicate closely with your representation to learn if opting for Special Appearances can help you.
When is the exact moment someone adopts a criminal mindset? Is the answer a product of their circumstances, their choices, or both? I sit with my good friend, Kris Scott, and put juvenile preventative programs under the lens.

Did you know I once tried to be a cop?
I sit with my friend, Kris (next episode), and we touched on the idea of qualifications during our conversation. This clip has been edited out of the next episode, but you can hear it here - Really quick story about my experience and why I'm not a police officer today.
Note: In 2015, law enforcement executed a region wide raid on the bail bond industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the time, I was working at a bail company and was caught up in the sweeps - don't worry, I'm innocent. Feel free to email me if you're curious about the experience and what I learned about the legal system.
