A to Z Sports Giveaway Terms & Conditions: ***** Mike Payton is admitting when he was WRONG about the Detroit Lions. After spending the entire summer watching Lions training camp and preseason, Mike is looking back at the players he didn't believe would make the team and the players he still believes he was right about. Mike admits he got several players wrong, including Sione Vaki, Brock Wright, Ennis Rakestraw, Eric O'Neal and Myles Frazier. Sione Vaki is the first player Mike revisits. He admits he put too much emphasis on Varkey's injury history and didn't give enough credit to the value Dan Campbell and the Lions placed on his special teams ability. Mike also explains why he initially questioned Brock Wright's place on the roster before realizing how much Detroit values him. Then there's Ennis Rakestraw, who Mike admits he jumped the gun on after an up-and-down training camp and multiple minor injuries. Mike now believes he underestimated how much potential the Lions still see in Rakestraw. Mike also discusses Eric O'Neal and Myles Frazier, including why he believes Frazier simply needs more development and why Detroit decided to keep O'Neal on the 53-man roster. But Mike isn't willing to admit he was wrong about everything. He still believes the Lions will eventually bring in another quarterback to compete with Josh Dobbs, and he's doubling down on his belief that Jackson Meeks will become an important part of Detroit's offense. And then there's Greg Dortch. Mike explains why Dortch's release remains one of the most shocking Lions roster decisions he's seen, why he doesn't believe Amon-Ra St. Brown's comments explain the decision, and what he thinks the Lions may have been thinking when they chose other players instead. Which Lions player did Mike get the most wrong? And which of his takes do YOU still think he's wrong about? Let us know in the comments. After everything Mike saw during training camp and the preseason, where will Detroit finish? Mike has the Lions going 12-5 and winning the NFC North. The season begins with a Week 1 matchup against the New Orleans Saints at Ford Field. Mike expects Detroit to start the season 1-0 before traveling to Buffalo for what he believes will be the Lions' biggest early-season defensive test. From there, Mike has Detroit beating the Jets, Panthers and Cardinals before entering the bye week at 4-1. The Lions then return home to face Green Bay before taking on the Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins and AFC champion New England Patriots in Germany. Mike has Detroit winning all four games and entering the Tampa Bay matchup at 8-1. That's where Mike has the Lions taking their first loss since Buffalo. Detroit then beats Chicago on Thanksgiving, Atlanta and Tennessee before dropping a road game to Minnesota. The Lions bounce back against the Giants, but Mike has Detroit losing to the Bears in Chicago in Week 17. The final game of the regular season is against Green Bay at Lambeau Field. Mike expects Detroit to already have the NFC North secured by that point and believes the Lions could rest their starters, resulting in a Week 18 loss. That leaves Detroit at 12-5 and headed to the playoffs as NFC North champions. Mike also explains why he believes the Lions' schedule sets up well, why Detroit could potentially have a strong advantage heading into the second half of the season, and why he still believes this is a team capable of winning the Super Bowl. A to Z Sports Giveaway Terms & Conditions: ***** The Detroit Lions are officially moving from training camp and preseason into Week 1 preparation, but Brad Holmes' end-of-summer press conference revealed several important storylines surrounding this roster. Mike Payton breaks down the biggest takeaways from Brad Holmes' comments, including the Lions' wide receiver situation, the mystery surrounding Greg Dortch, Terry Arnold's situation, Isaiah Pacheco's timeline, Detroit's improved pass rush, and the impact of this rookie class. Play A to Z Sports Daily Games: For more LIONS coverage: Facebook: Instagram: Twitter/X: TikTok: The biggest question remains at wide receiver. The Lions only currently have four wide receivers on their 53-man roster, and Dan Campbell suggested Detroit could continue exploring options either internally with players like Tom Kennedy, Dominic Lovett, and Lucky Jackson, or externally through free agency. Mike explains why the Greg Dortch situation remains one of the strangest roster decisions of the offseason. Mike also discusses Terry Arnold's situation and whether Detroit did enough to replace him. While some fans questioned the move, Mike explains why he believes the Lions may have actually improved through addition by subtraction while still acknowledging the depth questions at cornerback. The health of Isaiah Pacheco is another major storyline. Detroit has confidence in its running back room, but there is still no clear timeline for when Pacheco will return after dealing with injuries throughout training camp. The biggest positive takeaway? The Lions appear to have accomplished their offseason goal of adding more pass rush juice. Mike breaks down how additions like D.J. Wonnum, Derrick Moore, Skyler Gill-Howard, and the return of Alim McNeill have changed Detroit's defensive identity heading into the season. Plus, Mike explains why this rookie class feels different than previous Lions draft classes and why Detroit appears ready to ask young players to contribute immediately as a contender. Winner will be chosen on Friday September 11th A to Z Sports Giveaway Terms & Conditions: Play A to Z Sports Daily Games: The Detroit Lions have their initial 53-man roster, but Mike Payton believes there are several roster decisions that deserve more questions. Mike breaks down the biggest mistakes Detroit may have made during the roster-building process, including the surprising decision to move on from Greg Dortch, the uncertainty at returner, the lack of a waiver-wire addition, and concerns about Josh Dobbs as Jared Goff's backup. The biggest question is Greg Dortch. Dortch was one of Detroit's top returners throughout training camp and consistently worked with the first-team units. Mike explains why his release was one of the most confusing decisions of the offseason and why the Lions now have questions at both kick returner and punt returner. Mike also discusses why Eric Hunter not making the Lions' practice squad was surprising after the rookie showed significant upside throughout training camp and preseason. Another major topic is Detroit's decision not to use their No. 17 waiver priority. After having their highest waiver position since 2022, Mike explains why he expected the Lions to potentially add another piece to a Super Bowl-contending roster. The Lions' backup quarterback situation is also under the microscope. Mike explains why Luke Altemeyer was not ready for the QB2 role and why he still has questions about whether Josh Dobbs is the long-term answer behind Jared Goff. Finally, Mike looks at Detroit carrying five running backs and whether that roster spot could have been better used elsewhere. The Lions are still one of the NFL's best teams, but every roster decision matters when you're trying to compete for a championship. What Lions roster decision surprised you the most? • The Lions Could Add HUGE Talent After Roster Cuts
The Detroit Lions' initial 53-man roster is set but Mike Payton doesn't believe it's the final roster. With the waiver wire and free agency opening up, Detroit has an opportunity to add more talent to several positions, particularly at guard and quarterback. The Lions also hold the No. 17 waiver priority, giving them a much better chance to land players who become available. Mike breaks down several players the Lions should have their eyes on following roster cuts. Robert Jones is one of the most intriguing offensive-line options. Jones started all 17 games at left guard for the Miami Dolphins in 2024 and has 30 career starts. Mike explains why Jones could realistically walk into Allen Park and compete with Christian Mahogany for the starting guard job. Cordell Volson is another experienced guard to watch. Volson started 48 games for the Cincinnati Bengals over three seasons before missing the 2025 season after shoulder surgery. If he's healthy, Mike believes Detroit should at least bring him in and let him compete. Then there's quarterback. Mike explains why the Lions should consider taking a chance on former Titans quarterback Will Levis. Despite his struggles in Tennessee, Levis has the arm talent Detroit could potentially develop with a coaching staff that includes former quarterbacks and quarterback coaches. Mike's favorite waiver-wire target, however, may be defensive tackle McKinley Jackson. The former third-round pick is only 24 years old, has already appeared in 22 NFL games and reportedly drew trade interest before Cincinnati waived him. With Detroit holding the No. 17 waiver priority, Mike believes the Lions should seriously consider making a claim. Mike also discusses Jake Browning, Jabari Muhammad, Colby Wooden and other players Detroit could target in the coming days. The Lions' initial 53-man roster is NOT necessarily the final roster. • The Lions Projected Final 53-Man Roster Has SHOCKING Decisions...
The Detroit Lions have officially reached the hardest part of building a roster: deciding which talented players make the final 53. After months of training camp, preseason games and roster battles, A to Z Sports Detroit's Mike Payton reveals his final Detroit Lions 53-man roster prediction. And there are some difficult decisions. Mike breaks down every position group, including surprising calls involving Josh Dobbs, Luke Altmyer, Kony Varkey, Jackson Meeks, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and more. The quarterback room is one of the biggest questions. Mike currently has Jared Goff and Luke Altmyer making the roster, but he believes Detroit will continue looking for a veteran quarterback option after cuts. Josh Dobbs struggled to separate himself during preseason, while Altmyer showed enough potential for the Lions to keep him around potentially on the practice squad if another veteran option becomes available. The running back room features one of Mike's biggest changes. After previously expressing concern about Sione Vaki's injury situation, Mike believes Vaki has earned a roster spot. With Isaiah Pacheco's status uncertain heading into Week 1, Vaki could potentially have a significant role early in the season. At wide receiver, Mike explains why Tay Martin earned the final receiver spot. His ability to contribute on special teams and handle the dirty work that Dan Campbell values gives him the edge over other talented players. The tight end room features another difficult decision. Jackson Meeks has shown enough potential that Mike believes Detroit should keep him on the roster and continue developing him into a bigger offensive contributor throughout the season. The offensive line may be the biggest wildcard. Mike believes Detroit could still add outside help at guard after Dan Campbell acknowledged that the competition may not be solved by players currently on the roster. Could the Lions add a veteran? Could a former draft pick become available? The biggest debate may come at cornerback. Mike explains why Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is the toughest player to leave off the roster despite flashes of talent, and why Detroit's depth at corner makes the numbers game extremely difficult. Finally, Mike discusses his decisions at defensive line, linebacker, safety and special teams. Who made Mike's final 53-man roster? Who was left off? And which decisions do you disagree with? • The Lions Just Revealed What This Team Really Is...
The Detroit Lions have officially wrapped up training camp, and their final scrimmage before Week 1 gave us some major clues about what this team could look like in 2026. A to Z Sports Detroit's Mike Payton breaks down his biggest observations from the final day of Lions training camp, including Detroit's defense looking like its old self again, questions surrounding Jahmyr Gibbs, Jared Goff's strong performance and a surprising update on Kony Varkey. The biggest takeaway from the final scrimmage was the Lions defense. After struggling to stop the run last season, Detroit's front seven appeared to regain the identity that helped make them successful in previous years. The Lions spent the entire scrimmage shutting down the run game outside of one explosive Jahmyr Gibbs touchdown run. Mike explains why that could be a major sign that Detroit's defense is ready to bounce back in 2026. Speaking of Gibbs, the Lions running back enters the season with a different challenge. With David Montgomery no longer in the picture, Gibbs is expected to handle a much larger workload. While his explosiveness remains undeniable, Mike discusses why there are still questions about how the offense will look when Gibbs is asked to be the primary option. The offense still had plenty of positives. Jared Goff looked sharp, Amon-Ra St. Brown continued making plays, and Jameson Williams had a memorable touchdown catch during the scrimmage. Detroit's passing game appears ready for Week 1. One of the biggest surprises from the final day was Sione Vaki After previously expressing concern about Vaki's injury history, Mike explains why he changed his opinion after watching Vaki throughout the final week of camp. With Isaiah Pacheco's status uncertain, Vaki could have a major role early in the season. Mike also breaks down Detroit's final overtime scenario, including a dramatic Amon-Ra St. Brown touchdown that was overturned and Jahmyr Gibbs' game-winning score. Training camp is officially over. Now the Lions turn their attention toward Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints. • The Lions Are About To Make Some BRUTAL Cuts...
The Detroit Lions are almost finished building their 2026 roster, and Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have some extremely difficult decisions ahead. After a full summer of training camp, preseason games and roster battles, A to Z Sports Detroit's Mike Payton reveals his final 53-man roster prediction for the Lions. The biggest question facing Detroit isn't whether they have enough talent. It's whether they have enough roster spots. Mike breaks down every position group, including some surprising decisions involving Luke Altmyer, Sione Vaki, Jackson Meeks, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and more. The quarterback room remains one of the biggest questions. Mike currently has Jared Goff and Luke Altmyer making the roster, but he believes Detroit could still explore outside options once NFL cuts happen. Josh Dobbs showed flashes during preseason, but turnovers and limited practice reps have created uncertainty around his future with the team. The running back battle is another difficult decision. Sione Vaki entered camp as the favorite for RB3 because of his special teams ability, but injuries opened the door for Jacob Saylors. Mike explains why availability may ultimately determine who makes the roster. At wide receiver, Detroit's fifth receiver competition appears to come down to what the Lions value most. Mike believes Tay Martin's special teams ability and willingness to do the dirty work gives him an edge, while Tom Kennedy and others may have a tougher path. The tight end room features another surprise. Jackson Meeks has continued making plays throughout camp and preseason, including a game-changing special teams play against Washington. Mike explains why Meeks may have done enough to earn a roster spot. The biggest roster debates come on defense. Mike explains why Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is the hardest player to project onto the final roster despite flashes of talent, why Khalil Dorsey has become nearly impossible to cut because of special teams value, and why Detroit's cornerback depth creates an incredibly difficult numbers game. Finally, Mike discusses the Lions' offensive line situation, including why Detroit may still need outside help at guard before Week 1. Who made Mike's final 53-man roster? Who got left off? • The Lions Have A HUGE Advantage Nobody Is Talking About...
The Detroit Lions have a rare opportunity heading into NFL roster cuts that they haven't had in years. After a disappointing 2025 season, Detroit enters final cuts with a much higher waiver priority than they are used to having. That means when talented players become available around the NFL, the Lions will have a better chance to claim them and improve their roster. A to Z Sports Detroit's Mike Payton breaks down why this could become one of Detroit's biggest roster-building advantages heading into the 2026 season. The Lions still have questions they need to answer. Detroit is continuing to evaluate the guard position, and Dan Campbell recently acknowledged that the player competing for the starting job may not even currently be on the roster. The Lions could look for help through veteran free agency, trades, or the waiver wire once teams make their final cuts. Quarterback is another position worth watching. The backup quarterback competition between Josh Dobbs and Luke Altmyer remains one of the biggest storylines heading into the final week of the preseason. If Detroit decides it needs another option behind Jared Goff, the waiver wire could provide opportunities. Mike also discusses possible names Lions fans have already been watching, including quarterbacks who could potentially become available after final roster decisions around the NFL. One of the biggest advantages Detroit has is timing. Teams with better records will have worse waiver priority, while the Lions will be positioned ahead of many contenders when players become available. That could give Brad Holmes and the Lions front office access to players they normally wouldn't have a realistic shot at acquiring. Could Detroit add a former first-round pick? Could they find offensive line help? Could they improve their quarterback room? Mike breaks down why the Lions' higher waiver priority could quietly become a major advantage before the 2026 season begins. • The Lions Defense Just Sent A SCARY Message To The NFL...
The Detroit Lions beat the Washington Commanders 17-13 in their second preseason game, but the final score wasn't nearly as important as what Mike Payton saw from Detroit's defense. The Lions defensive front looked fast, aggressive and disruptive throughout the game, continuing a trend Mike has been watching throughout training camp. D.J. Wonnum got to Jayden Daniels for a sack, rookie Derrick Moore continued to create pressure, and several Detroit defensive linemen flashed against Washington. And that's before the Lions even have their entire defensive front together. Aidan Hutchinson didn't need preseason work, while Alim McNeill also wasn't part of the full group Detroit expects to deploy when the regular season begins. If the urgency and quick pressure the Lions showed against Washington carries into Week 1, Mike believes this defensive line could look significantly different from the group Detroit fielded last season. There were plenty of other important developments in the Lions' 17-13 preseason victory. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. returned after dealing with another injury and put together a solid performance, but Mike still isn't convinced his spot on the final 53-man roster is secure. Detroit's cornerback room is crowded, and Rakestraw may have to convince the Lions that carrying an additional corner is worth sacrificing a roster spot somewhere else. The backup quarterback battle also took another major turn. Josh Dobbs had one of the strangest performances of the afternoon. His opening possessions included a sack and fumble that Washington recovered for a touchdown and a bad interception. Then Dobbs responded with a 50-yard rushing touchdown. Luke Altmyer was the complete opposite. The rookie quarterback completed 9 of 13 passes for 86 yards without a touchdown or interception and once again looked calm and controlled. Mike explains why Altmyer's consistency may have given him the advantage over Dobbs while also wondering whether Detroit could still look outside the organization for another veteran quarterback before the season. The Lions offensive line provided another mixed result. Detroit's starting group showed encouraging signs, and Juice Scruggs continues to make Mike feel better about the center position while Cade Mays is unavailable. But the depth behind the starters remains concerning after Luke Altmyer absorbed significant pressure. Mike breaks down the biggest winners, concerns and roster implications from the Detroit Lions' preseason win over the Washington Commanders at Ford Field.
