  • The Lions Have A LOT To Figure Out Against Washington...
The Detroit Lions face the Washington Commanders Saturday at Ford Field, and this preseason matchup could give Dan Campbell some important answers before Detroit has to finalize its roster and starting lineup. A to Z Sports Detroit's Mike Payton is joined by new A to Z Sports Commanders host Sean Anderson to break down what both teams need to see, which Lions players could benefit most from real game reps and why some of the biggest training camp narratives need to be viewed differently once the football actually becomes live. Jared Goff will not play for the Lions, which puts the spotlight on Josh Dobbs and rookie Luke Altmyer as Detroit continues evaluating its backup quarterback situation. Mike explains why Dobbs still has something to prove and why Saturday could provide a much clearer picture of how the Lions actually view their quarterback room behind Goff. Detroit's offensive line could be even more important. With the Lions still trying to determine their best five-man combination, Saturday provides an opportunity to evaluate communication, chemistry and individual performance in a setting training camp can't completely recreate. Rookie tackle Blake Miller is one player both Mike and Sean are especially interested in watching after an encouraging start to his first NFL preseason. The guys also discuss why fans should be careful about overreacting to offensive line versus defensive line one-on-one results during training camp. Those drills inherently favor pass rushers and don't recreate the protections, chips, quarterback movement or game situations offensive linemen would normally have available. On the Washington side, the Commanders have their own major offensive line questions following Laremy Tunsil's injury, making their matchup against Detroit's pass rush particularly valuable. Then Mike and Sean dive into one of the most interesting quarterback-development stories in the NFL: Jayden Daniels studying Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford. Former Lions quarterback and current Washington offensive coordinator David Blough is working with Daniels as the Commanders reshape their offense. Sean explains why Goff's command of the pocket, processing and ability to control a game could provide an ideal blueprint for an athletic quarterback like Daniels as he continues developing the mental side of the position. Can Daniels become even more dangerous by running less? What can young quarterbacks learn from Goff's pocket movement? And which Lions players need to make the biggest impression Saturday? Mike Payton and Sean Anderson break it all down ahead of Detroit Lions vs. Washington Commanders. • The Lions Have 10 Players With EVERYTHING On The Line...
The Detroit Lions are almost out of training camp practices, and Saturday's preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders could be the most important day of the summer for several players fighting for jobs, roles and spots on Detroit's final 53-man roster. Mike Payton breaks down 10 Lions players who have a tremendous amount riding on the team's second preseason game, including Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Luke Altmyer, Seth McLaughlin, Dominic Lovett, Tay Martin, Sione Vaki and more. For Sione Vaki, an injury opened the door for Jacob Saylors to make a strong impression during training camp and the preseason. Vaki's special teams ability has always given him a legitimate path to Detroit's roster, but Mike explains why the remaining practices and Saturday's game could be crucial to reestablishing his place in the running back room. The wide receiver battle may be even tighter. Dominic Lovett entered camp looking like a strong candidate for Detroit's fifth receiver spot, but his uneven preseason performance and the special teams value of Tay Martin have complicated the race. Mike believes Lovett and Martin may essentially be competing for one roster spot, making every special teams rep and offensive opportunity against Washington important. Jackson Meeks faces a different challenge after transitioning from wide receiver to tight end. Mike still believes in Meeks' long-term upside, but the Lions may ultimately decide he's a developmental player better suited for the practice squad unless he forces their hand. Then there's the offensive line. With Cade Mays unavailable, Seth McLaughlin has an opportunity to compete with Juice Scruggs at center. McLaughlin impressed against Cincinnati, but Detroit's recent practice usage suggests Scruggs has the advantage. Can McLaughlin change that conversation against Washington? Mike also examines Eric O'Neill's push for a defensive roster spot, Levi Onwuzurike's battle with injuries and a crowded defensive line, Joe Bachie's special teams path at linebacker and the increasingly important backup quarterback competition between rookie Luke Altmyer and veteran Josh Dobbs. Finally, there's Ennis Rakestraw Jr. The former second-round pick has flashed throughout camp but has struggled to consistently stay on the field and string performances together. With Detroit's cornerback room extremely competitive, Rakestraw may need one of his best performances of the summer to convince the Lions they need to make room for another corner on the 53. The Detroit Lions host the Washington Commanders Saturday, and for these 10 players, it could be much more than another preseason game. • The Lions Have Several Players Making SERIOUS Noise At Camp...
The Detroit Lions are reaching the most important stretch of training camp, and several players are beginning to make their moves before Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have to finalize the 53-man roster. Mike Payton breaks down his biggest observations from Day 15 of Detroit Lions training camp, including a disruptive performance from the Lions defense, another encouraging day for Ennis Rakestraw Jr., some major developments along the offensive line and an increasingly interesting quarterback situation behind Jared Goff. Detroit's defense made life difficult on the offense throughout several situational periods. Aidan Hutchinson finished the final competitive sequence by getting to Jared Goff on a two-point conversion attempt, while rookie edge rusher Derrick Moore continued to flash as a pass rusher. Anthony Lucas, Derrick Barnes and others also made plays during a practice where Detroit's defense consistently created problems. But one of the biggest individual stories continues to be Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Mike didn't have Rakestraw on his projected Lions 53-man roster following Detroit's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Since then, however, Rakestraw has started stacking the consistent practices Dan Campbell has been looking for. He broke up a pass intended for Jameson Williams, generated a sack on a cornerback blitz and continued showing sticky coverage during another encouraging practice. Has Rakestraw worked his way back onto the roster? The Detroit Lions offensive line also appears to be taking shape. Ben Bartch once again wasn't practicing, and Mike believes Christian Mahogany has done enough to take control of the left guard competition. Meanwhile, Juice Scruggs received the overwhelming majority of the first-team work at center with Cade Mays unavailable, with Seth McLaughlin also receiving a limited opportunity. Then there's the backup quarterback situation. Rookie Luke Altmyer continues to receive considerably more practice work than veteran Joshua Dobbs. Mike explains why the unusual split raises questions about Detroit's quarterback room and whether the Lions could eventually look outside the organization for another option. Plus, the punt-return competition between Greg Dortch and Tom Kennedy could have major implications for the final receiver spots, with Tay Martin and Dominic Lovett also trying to make their cases. With only a handful of practices and two preseason games remaining, the Lions are rapidly approaching decision time. Mike Payton breaks down everything that stood out from Detroit Lions training camp and which players helped themselves the most.
