  • Episode 9: Matt Fitzpatrick

Episode 9 of the DEUCE Racing Podcast, with our very own Matt Fitzpatrick, is here! Matt, who received an MA in Curriculum & Instruction at CSUDH in May 2020, currently teaches high school science (Health, Physiology, and Biology), and is the co-lead within the Health Careers Academy, as well as advisor for the newly created Gay-Straight Alliance. Last year he supported students in their efforts to run the LA Marathon!

Part of what makes Matt's current role and impact as an educator so compelling is his diverse background -- in fields completely separate from teaching! As he transitions into a profession in LA, a city he is proud to have grown up in, Matt is eager to meet and learn from others who are cultivating an inquiry-based, social justice centered, culturally-responsive, tech-supported, and inclusive learning environment. He aims to “queer” science education, create an environment where students find affirmation in who they are, and know that despite feeling uncertain or certain about the future… that love, curiosity, and the ability to adapt can help each of us live as our most authentic self.

As always, we invite you to tune in, like, subscribe, and share with all your family & friends!

  • Episode 8: Emily Hacker

Did you know? Fewer than 4% of airline pilots are women.

And, one of them is our very own Emily Hacker.

In this episode of the DEUCE Racing podcast, meet Hacker! An LA native and student of DEUCE for several years, who not only flies, but jumps out of airplanes, too – she’s got 498 sky dives!

Hacker is a true Renaissance woman who attributes a growth mindset to helping expand and enrich her life. How she approaches training, and really, most things in life, comes from a place of wonder. Rather than getting fixated on the outcome of things – particularly things she’s never tried before – she tends to frame life experience from this line of thought instead, “Hmm. I wonder if…”

Looking for inspiration to try something new without letting the fear of failure stop you? This episode is for YOU. Inviting you to tune into this episode and like, subscribe, and share with friends & family, as always!

As Hacker puts it, “You have to give yourself the permission and allowance to be a beginner.”

Cheers to infinite growth, and highlighting another exceptional human being in the DEUCE Community!

Also, Emily has her own podcast!

  • Episode 7: Derek Walker

Chef, restaurant owner, 10-year Program Director & Instructor of The Culinary Training Program at St. Joseph's Center - a remarkable non-profit right down the street from DEUCE Gym in Venice, Ironman triathlete, Chopped winner, (folks... the list goes on!) student of DEUCE since 2014, and forever a student life, LA native Derek Walker lives a fascinating, richly diverse and decorated, constantly evolving life.

Short and sweet, here's what makes this conversation with Derek exceptional: the juxtaposition in perspective from an individual who has been and continues to be deeply committed to embracing opportunity (and all the obstacles that come with it) throughout his entire life, as well as open-minded enough during the darkest depths of any meaningful pursuit to step back and honor taking a break from passion when needed.

Very much a "yes" man to maximizing all that life has to offer, Derek looks at any challenge with this approach:

"I don't look at it as a burden. I look at it as an opportunity."

This is kind of the conversation you'll listen to and walk away reminded that anything is possible! As always, we invite you to tune in HERE, like, subscribe, and share with everyone you know.

  • Episode 6: Ben Smith

    We love Ben Smith.

Not only is Ben a beloved GPP Coach at both DEUCE Gym in Venice and DEUCE Backlot in Hollywood, he’s also the Head Coach of three DEUCE Specialty courses – Nutrition, DELTA BRAVO, and Bodybuilding.

And while you might already know a bit about Ben’s background in the military, or how he came to find DEUCE, you’ve likely never heard him tell the story about sending DEUCE Founder, Logan Gelbrich, a DM from a porta potty somewhere in Germany... or how (and why) he came to learn about strength & conditioning… or heard him speak about embodiment, and how a greater understanding of somatic processing has contributed to a richer, much more expansive perspective on things like commitment & manifestation.

Ben Smith doesn’t just get the job done with everything that he does, he unequivocally lives it. And, in the way he understands that strength & conditioning training can grow one’s capacity, Ben applies that same mentality to growing his capacity in all other expressions of life. As Ben puts it, while being successful in one field doesn’t guarantee success elsewhere, it does teach you that you can do hard things, and stay in it – regardless of what the outcome is. In this way, “Success is a function of consistency.”

On this week’s DEUCE Racing Podcast episode, I’m beyond excited to share with all of you a conversation that will surely inspire!

  • Episode 5: Campbell Lillard

We have a saying at DEUCE, "Killers Only." Make no mistake, the connotation behind that saying is positive, in reference to the self-propelled drive of a living organism to proactively act upon life, as opposed to passively or reactively succumbing to it; behaving with the independence & conviction of a predator, not prey.

It is with incredible excitement and honor that I invite you to tune into my conversation with Campbell Lillard on this week's episode of the DEUCE Racing podcast! Campbell exemplifies an evolving, proactive way of living to an awe-inspiring, exponential degree, and, coupled with his relentless growth mindset, has both experienced and created radical transformation in a very short period of time.

Through Campbell's work coaching at DEUCE Garage in Venice, with The Phoenix, with Homeboy Industries, and now in bringing to life the first ever DEUCE nonprofit, there's a 100% chance you'll finish listening this conversation bursting with Campbell's infectious energy to be & do better in your own life. Right now, today, and every day forward..

  • Episode 4: Chessa Latiffi Donaldson

“I don’t know how to like anything, I only know how to love things.”

Let's start here: we don't call her "Mayor of the Morning" for nothing... In this week's episode, we feature a DEUCE legend, Chessa Latiffi Donaldson! She's been a student at DEUCE for five years, is a mother of two, and has an extensive background in non-profit work. She is also the epitome of a champion to our DEUCE community - fiercely committed & consistent to training, as well as exceptionally generous in making sure those around her feel seen and celebrated for their efforts, always.

A few fun facts about Chessa - she PR'd her 2k row while pregnant with her second child, got her first (and second!) bar muscle up during the CrossFit Open earlier this year, and has a knack for name-dropping our beloved Tim Brown better than anyone else out there. (We love you, Tim.) She's also the ring leader of CPFC (CarPort Fitness Club!), a training group - no, family! - that evolved in 2020 during quarantine when the gym was closed due to COVID; an impressive testament to the power of a non-negotiable dedication to training, paired with community.

It's impossible to listen to Chessa speak and not feel inspired. Enjoy.
