In this episode of Elixir Mix, Chris Keathley introduces himself briefly and starts with talking about his work at Bleacher Report - a company specializing in sports culture - with respect to handling web traffic during major sports events and the implications of moving from Rails to Elixir as a backend system. He briefly touches on scaling issues, performance and the services they are running on their website.

He then describes his Elixir journey until now and certain new areas he is working with, such as property based testing and distributed systems. He talks about maintaining the Wallaby library which is developed by him, mentions existing and upcoming exciting things in Elixir, and explains a few features of the Distillery and Vapor libraries. He also gives advice to people that are starting to work with Elixir on what must be learnt and more, and discusses certain projects and topics he wants to pursue and build knowledge in, in the near future.

This weeks panel, Charles Wood, Alyssa Nicholl, and Joe Eames discuss 2 articles: 1st The Great Divide by Chris Coyier and 2nd Tales of a Non-Unicorn by Laura Schenk. These articles tell of the broad meaning for “Front-End Web Developer” talking of how “HTML + CSS along with JavaScript” all fall under the same title causing confusion with job interviews and even once a developer gets into the job. It is neat to hear perspectives of Alyssa Nicholl and Joe Eames together as Alyssa is more on the HTML/CSS side of Web Dev and Joe Eames is more with the JavaScript side.

The panel also discusses difficulties with interviewing for jobs. Charles Wood leads a discussion on what the interviewers could improve on in hiring the people they actually want. The panel shares experiences of not getting jobs for reasons that are not super valid. They also touch on the pay difference between the 2 sides of the “WebDev” job description.

In this episode of My JavaScript Story, Charles Max Wood speaks with his namesake Bart Wood. They talked about tools for tracking and monitoring problems while using apps.  One app in particular was able to track new releases and errors, automatically scrub passwords to secure information as well as customize the scrubbing process while allowing users to provide feedback. 

Charles delves into the past of Bart Wood who has been working with the same company, Henry Shine.  He started studying Economics before he got into programming by chance and eventually ended up graduating with a Masters in Computer Science.  Initially Bart had misconceptions of computing and eventually realized that it was not only about maintaining the OS system and learning keyboard strokes, but creating new apps and delving into the world of creating new software.

Josh Justice joins us to talk about testing React Native. We discuss everything from unit testing, to integration & end-to-end testing.

iPhreaks is back after a break. Special Guest: Miško Hevery

In this episode of My JavaScript Story, Charles hosts Miško Hevery, creator of Angular and Senior Computer Scientist at Google.

Miško was introduced to computers when his father brought a Sinclair ZX Spectrum home for them to play with. When they moved to the United States from Czech Republic, Miško attended Rochester Institute of Technology and studied Computer Engineering. After working for companies such as Adobe, Sun Microsystems, Intel, and Xerox, he joined Google where created the Angular framework. Miško is currently working on Angular Ivy at Google and plans to restart a blog in the future.

In this episode of My Ruby Story, Charles hosts Vladimir Dementyev, a backend engineer at  Evil Martians and a mathematician who found his happiness in programming Ruby and Erlang. He is also the author of Author of AnyCable, TestProf and ActionPolicy.

Vladimir studied mathematics in university and started programming with ActionScript in an internship during his university education. He then went onto developing with Ruby and became heavily involved in open source projects. He is originally from Moscow but is currently based out of Brooklyn, NY working for Evil Martians, a web development consultancy company that supports open source projects. Vladimir will be a speaker at the RailsConf 2019.

Joe Eames leads the panel in a discussion of the path to a career in computer programming. The panel has a varied educational background, Mike and Dani share their experiences attending a university. Dani Sloan piques Joe Eames interest with her programming experience in school even though it was not the degree she set out to obtain. Mike Dane shares his appreciation for any school or program that has an alumni network. Jesse Sanders was self taught with a little formal education, he talks about the vast amounts of programming knowledge out there and how it can be hard to find a path and to remain well rounded and grounded in the fundamentals.

Using their individual knowledge and experience, the panel discuss the merits of various educational paths. The benefits and drawbacks of university, bootcamps, and teaching oneself are discussed. The panel also branches out into a few newer and hybrid types of education such as part-time school, Neumont University, Lambda School, and schools like University of Phoenix, which you can do from home. They discuss the finances and time that each may take and give recommendations for a few different situations that people may be coming from, such as, switching careers or starting fresh from high school.

In this episode Chris and Divya discuss the various aspects of making online forms for clients or checkout processes for customers user friendly. They discuss input masking which allows the user who might be a client or customer to input data such as phone numbers and emails in a way that is readable to the user while still allowing the browser to read the information on the website or when filling out an online form.

Chris and Divya touch on some basic questions the engineer might come across in creating these fields. These include: where the users cursor is, pasting issues, time zones, autosizing text areas.

They go into detail on filling out forms and the options of having multiple end-points one end point, and ways to help the customer or client fill out data smoothly and correctly. They discuss a little about using a progress bar to help users to see how far along they are in the process. They discuss the option of help-text which helps users to quick reference what something might be when filling out a less familiar form. They discuss briefly the usage of max-limit or max-length; AB Testing.

Ultimately in this episode, Chris and Divya help those software engineers who are wanting a basic understanding of what questions they might come across to make a client or customers process on the form or site as smooth as possible through input masking and more.
