Today’s guest is Ben Collins, who creates online courses, writes tutorials, and teaches workshops around G Suite and App Script. Apps Script is a scripting platform developed by Google for light-weight application development in the G Suite platform. It is an implementation of JavaScript with the express purpose of extending Google apps. App Script was started 10 years ago as a side project, and it eventually took on its own life. Ben talks about some of the different things that App Script can do and where things are stored. They discuss different ways you can get into the script and how to import external scripts from a CDN. Ben gives two examples, one simple and one sophisticated, that you might build from App Script. He talks about event triggers and how authentication is handled. He goes over the three deployment options, namely web app, app executable, sheets add-on, and deploying from the manifest. Ben talks about how triggers are managed in App Script and options for debugging. There is also the option to develop locally as well as in the browser. The show ends with him talking about how to build using HTML in App Script.

Commit Brooklyn 2019: How Delta Became Truly Cloud Native - Avoiding the Vendor-Lock by Jasmine James

In this episode of the Freelancers Show, Mike Volkin leads the panel on a discussion of what he calls the nine traits to attract high paying clients. The first is to be attentive. This doesn’t mean overcommunicate but to better outline how and when you are going to communicate with clients. Second, is be mindful. Time is money, so put away your phone and avoid distractions during your designated working hours.

The third trait is to be caring. Care about your reputation, your clients and prospects. The fourth trait is to be resourceful. This is accomplished by doing your research on prospects, their problems and other experts in your niche. Fifth, be respectful. Respect your rates, don’t beg or lower your rates. 

Sixth, be a good listener. When on a call, listen to their pain points and problems. Don’t oversell yourself, all they need to know is your name, expertise, how long you’ve been a freelance and a small part of your story. The seventh trait is to be a good communicator. This means outline your scope of work and avoid scope creep. Eighth, be confident. Be confident in yourself and in your ability to complete the work. Show prospects you are confident by having pre-written answers to common questions. 

The final trait is to be a good manager. Manage yourself and manage up with your clients. Managing up by streamlining your communication. One email instead of three, send feedback, anticipate questions and understand how clients like to communicate. Mike also outlines the flow of a discovery call and shares how he targets high paying clients.

Guest Becca Bailey gave a talk at ReactConf in 2019 called The State of React State in 2019 and will be giving another talk at an upcoming conference. She gives a summary of her ReactConf talk, which was inspired by her experiences she has had as a developer. In her talk, she talks about different tools and testing for state management. She and the panelists discuss how to recommend changing tools to a team instead of individuals. She shares some experiences from her job. They discuss ways to keep a work culture from turning toxic and how to start the conversation about state management. The React experts talk about strategies when you chose something for a project that ends up being the wrong decision, and prevent poor decisions like that in the future. It’s important to strike a balance between preparing for the future and anticipating it.

Becca and the panel discuss alternatives to using Redux for state management, and some of the advantages of using it. They discuss how to decide what is put into local versus global state and how to know when you can depreciate shared state. Becca has helped teams decide what conventions they will use moving forward for managing local and global state, which gives you a standard for code reviews that reduces decision fatigue. They discuss common use cases for refactoring. Put simply, refactoring becomes necessary when it becomes hard to make simple changes. Becca also talks about being intentional about managing team culture and ways to prevent problems from arising in the future.
