In this episode, Amakove reflects on the transition from pharma, but not before discussing life events at the family level and how all of it played out for the next moves she made.
Dr. Wala speaks about playing a leading role in advising medical affairs in two leading private pharmaceutical companies -- GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Bayer Healthcare.
Recalling her work with the Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative (#KAVI) in the early 2000s, Dr. Wala speaks of her experience conducting clinical research among discordant couples, sex workers, and men who have sex with men (MSM), and what it meant for public health. Now an acclaimed travel-business entrepreneur, she also related her first international trip to Europe.
An internship at PCEA Kikuyu Hospital, a posting to Tigoni Kitui Hospitals at the beginning of her career is as much clinical practice as Dr. Wala had.
Naive and young, Wala joined the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Medicine. She maintained a good grade to pass medical studies and was very exploratory. She recalls getting engaged at 18 years to her campus sweetheart, having a long-distance relationship, and supplementing her pocket money as a research assistant.
Considered a very prestigious job back then, Amakove's first job was that of a mortuary attendant at the Chiromo Mortuary.
Having completed high school at 16 years, Wala had interesting challenges navigating the gap years. She shares her experiences with raging teenage hormones, culture shock in Nairobi's Eastlands, and getting repatriated back to Bunyore, in Western Kenya.
Amakove has fond memories of Alliance Girls High School and how the institution instilled discipline, academic excellence, and social skills in her.
Wala recalls her time growing up in Mombasa and Kitale, as well as her early education and travel adventures as a child.
In this series' opening episode, Dr. Wala Amakove reminisces about her origins and roots and discusses her birth story, which happened 44 years ago under incredibly stressful conditions.
