  • What is Finished?
At first glance, the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth may appear just as another criminal to be sentenced to death by the brutal Roman empire. But for believers, for those familiar with the Scriptures, we know that this moment, that this event has been coming for thousands of years. There have been glimpses, promises, and sacred texts prophesying about this very event. Jesus has been trying to tell his followers that this is indeed why he has come, but they don't grasp it. As Jesus languishes on the cross, he cries, "It is finished!" What is finished? Praise God, much. Very much.

What do we find Jesus doing? He is praying. Jesus is a man of prayer. This chapter is known as Jesus' high priestly prayer. It's a magnificent prayer and is the focal point of today's devotionable.

  • Jesus Wept
God is always up to something, even when you can't see the whole picture. Jesus' love for Lazarus and his family is evident, and John stresses that fact in chapter 11. So that makes the beginning of the chapter very odd when Jesus hears of Lazarus' illness but chooses to stay for a couple of days before traveling to him. Jesus always had God's greater glory and Lazarus, Mary, and Martha's greater good in mind for what he would do and teach.
