  • God is with Us
Four hundred years have passed since Israel has had a prophetic word from the Lord. Has the Lord abandoned his people? What about his covenant promises? The gospels begin with a resounding word that God has not forgotten his people or his promises. The time for fulfillment is at hand. God is here. God is with us!

  • Is Following God Worth It?
The prophet Malachi records several exchanges between the LORD and the people of Isreal regarding their unfaithfulness to him. The last of such encounters includes a charge of Isreal against God and them questioning if following God is worth it. It's a question that each of us has to answer. Thankfully, God gives us an answer, and by his grace, our hearts will believe it and live accordingly. YES!

  • Pointing Others to God
Malachi 1 tells us of the spurning of the Lord. The people of Isreal despised the things given to them as a grace and pointed them to the Lord. Instead of telling others to the Lord, they turned people away from God.

  • Christian Faithfulness
Nehemiah 13 reads like an inspector's checklist or some matters of minutia. But this chapter reminds us that God's work isn't yet done. His purposes are still ongoing when the exiles return to the land. All of God's promises haven't been fulfilled yet because it is in Christ that all his promises are yes and amen! So, we seek to be faithful in the small things as we away the complete fulfillment of God's good and precious promises.

  • Why Do We Need to Confess Sin?
The central theme of Nehemiah 9 is repentance. The people recount their story and extol the excellent mercies of the LORD and confess their sins before him. Matthew Walden helps us consider why we must confess our sins when he already knows everything.

  • The Joy of the LORD is My Strength
Nehemiah leads the people to pray and work. The walls are rebuilt, but the city is still empty. The people began to fill their towns and gathered at the water gate. There Ezra reads the law, and the people reinstitute the feast of trumpets (their new year!) Those one cast away are brought back and now feast at the Lord's table with joy.

  • Prayer, Work, and Courage
Nehemiah is leading the returned exiles to rebuild Jerusalem's city walls and gates. As has become their custom, the Jews face opposition from wicked opponents. Nehemiah leads the people to pray, take courage in the Lord, and work. The believer can take much from their example.

  • God at Work
The Christian takes great confidence in Scripture's teaching that God is involved in our lives. Because he is concerned, we can proceed with life knowing that wherever we are, God has placed us and is working in us and through us. So go forth with courage and hope that God is at work.

  • Mordecai Refuses to Bow
Mordecai is one of the prominent characters in the Book of Esther. He's Esther's uncle, and the author paints a picture of Mordecai's faithfulness to the LORD. One example is his refusal to bow to tyrannical edicts, even though it may cost him his life. God sees fit in his providence to work through the life of Mordecai and Esther to save his people.
