KIRAN NAYAK

Fighting official apathy, spearheading a campaign for the rights of the disabled for the last 10 years, Kiran Nayak today runs the Karnataka Viakalchetanara Sangatane (KVS). Headquartered in Chikkaballapur, the organisation he founded now has over 9,000 active members.

Confronting officials, amplifying their voices through media and holding protests, Kiran’s outfit has multiple challenges to address: Government schemes that are misused, disability certificates and pensions appropriated by able-bodied people and officials demanding commissions to release disability pensions.

HANAMANT HUVANNA DEVANOOR

Enduring years of discrimination because his mother had leprosy, Hanamant Huvanna Devanoor took a pledge the day she passed away: He would do everything to break the shackles of that discrimination by tending to leprosy patients. And he has been doing exactly that for years with his wife Basamma.

Cleaning and dressing the wounds of leprosy patients, empowering their children to get educated and stand on their feet, Hanamant has now proposed to build a separate hospital under the Mahatma Gandhi Hyderabad Karnataka Leprosy Seva Trust that he founded.

DAYANAND JAGADISH APPAYYANAVARMATH

To help over 500 families in Belagavi’s Bailhongal taluk to shift to clean energy, organic farmer-turned entrepreneur Dayanand Jagadish Appayyanavarmath had a method: Biogas, which converts faecal sludge and cattle slurry to energy. In the process, he smartly forced a shift away from a centuries-old practice: Open defecation.

Building toilets and the basic biogas setup was the easy part for Dayanand. Getting people to talk about the taboo ‘defecation’ and human waste was a challenge. But Dayanand did not back out. He first convinced three families to sign up, and when they found their houses had become energy self-sufficient, the rest followed in droves.

DARSHAN HARIKANT

For Darshan Harikant, headmaster of a government higher primary school in Hulkutri, Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, Covid made it doubly hard for students to access the facility located on a hill surrounded by thick forests and rivers.

So he dived deep into text books, researched for interesting teaching material and came up with a website (hulkutrischool.in) – complete with visually appealing videos, pictures, diagrams and maps to help the students study remotely.

BHARATI GUDLANUR

From a homemaker barely three years ago to Karnataka’s very own Pad Woman, Bharati Gudlanur’s foray into entrepreneurship for a cause has been spectacular.

Inspired by the Akshay Kumar-starrer Bollywood flick Padman, Bharati ventured into sanitary napkin production, an area with an extremely high rate of failure, and proved how it can be a resounding success with a very social connection.

ASHA V SWAMY

Dignity in death. For the last six years, that has been the mantra of 29-year-old Asha V Swamy as she helped bury over 4,850 unidentified bodies found on railway tracks from Mandya to Kengeri, and on the streets of Ramanagara and Channapatna.

Alerted by the railway or civil police any time of the day or night, Asha would rush with her volunteers to the spot, handle the bodies with utmost respect and try her best to locate the relatives. If the family is not traced, she would perform the last rites herself.

Poet, writer and independent publisher from Shivamogga, Akshatha Humchadakatte stands tall for a reason: Her admirable mission to start a publishing house that would one day become the starting place for every first-time writer in Kannada.

Nurtured with care, her Aharnishi Prakashana has today earned a formidable reputation in the Kannada publishing space. Over half of the 90 plus books published from this house are by first-time writers, and most are women from diverse class and caste backgrounds.

ABHISHEKA KRISHNAGOPAL

Artist, ecologist and nature educator Abhisheka Krishnagopal from Bengaluru has a knack of connecting art, dance, science and nature. Mixing visual and performing arts in her own unique, interactive way, she has mastered the art of connecting people with nature.

So, she would dance and draw to show children the fascinating interconnected relationship between fig trees and fig wasps; hold countrywide art-based nature workshops to let people know how rich the biodiversity of their area is, and egg them on to develop a bond with the flora and fauna.
