Living with type 1 diabetes since I was 7, I bring my experiences as an American Diabetes Ambassador and an Executive Leader for the Tour De Cure, happening this Saturday, June 8th, 2024 🚴♀️❤️. I’m proud to share that my Hemoglobin A1C levels have been in a remarkably healthy range for several years, consistently between 5.5 and 5.8 🌟. My latest A1C, taken a few months ago, was 5.8. I started this podcast to show everyone affected by diabetes that it’s entirely possible to live a healthy, vibrant, and boundless life with this condition. While I’m in school to become a physician's assistant specializing in endocrinology, I’ll be releasing new episodes periodically.
Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Jason Robinson, the author of "The Beginner Traveler's Guide to Going Nomad" and a type 1 diabetic who received his diagnosis as an adult 🌍📚. We’ll dive into his journey to becoming a nomad, his experience managing diabetes, and how the diabetic community has influenced his life.

I'm Safiyah Basir, and I've been living with type one diabetes since I was just seven years old. As the American Diabetes Ambassador and an Executive Leader for the Tour De Cure, which took place on June 10th, 2023, I am thrilled to bring you this heartfelt podcast.
Imagine, my Hemoglobin A1C has consistently remained in an astonishingly healthy range for several years, ranging between 5.7-5.4. Recently, my A1C clocked in at a solid 5.7. It is my mission to show all those affected by diabetes that you can lead a vibrant, boundless life while staying healthy. Each week, a brand new episode will be waiting for you each week, brimming with captivating stories and valuable insights.
Diabetes is a multi-faceted journey, and today, we have the privilege of speaking with a truly remarkable individual, none other than Jalen King. Our paths crossed five years ago, around the time I discovered I was pregnant with my twin boys. Jalen has been living with diabetes since the tender age of eight and is currently undergoing dialysis. Together, Jalen and I will dive deep into his personal journey, as he shares his incredible wisdom and advice for all those touched by diabetes. I’ve started this podcast to show all who are touched by diabetes that you can have and live a healthy, full, limitless life with diabetes. I want to also remind everyone listening that these are opinions and not medical advice. I'll have a new episode each week. Today we have some amazing tips from Gary Forbes. Gary was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 19. Gary played college basketball for the University of Massachusetts, named player of the year for the A-10 league in 2008, Gary has played for the Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, and Brooklyn Nets. He played for the Saigon Heat four years ago and is currently retired. Today We’re speaking with Gary about his journey in life as a healthy, incredibly active diabetic basketball player.
1. Research your body and keep track of your blood sugars. How it reacts to your medicine and the foods that you're eating.
Keeping a 30 day journal is what Gary's father used to do to track his levels.
2. Being optimistic is and has been and can be helpful to maintain and manage your diabetic life.
