  • The Weirdest World

"Is the name of this world Florida?" I asked one of them. "The road signs said Florida."

"World, world, world, water, water, water, glub, glug, glub," said one of them.
"Eustace, I can get nothing from these fellows," I called. "Is this world named Florida?"

  • My Antonia

‘They can’t any of them speak English, except one little girl, and all she can say is “We go Black Hawk, Nebraska.” She’s not much older than you, twelve or thirteen, maybe, and she’s as bright as a new dollar. Don’t you want to go ahead and see her, Jimmy? She’s got the pretty brown eyes, too!’

  • Writings in The United Amateur, 1915-1922

Cobwebs in a profusion never before seen by me were spun everywhere, and huge bats flapped their bony and uncanny wings on all sides of the otherwise untenanted gloom. Of my exact age, even down to days and hours, I kept a most careful record, for each movement of the pendulum of the massive clock in the library tolled off so much more of my doomed existence.

  • Rock-climbing in the English Lake District

There was nothing at all that seemed firm. So I called for the axe, and, remembering certain tactics in an awful rock climb in Northern Italy some years before, I rammed the axe longitudinally into the crack and endeavoured to use it as a hold. The plan is sometimes effective, but on this occasion, it would not act; and I had to pass the axe down again.

  • Billy Whiskers in France

“Bow! Wow! Wow!” came the short, sharp, snappy barks from a Scotch terrier as they bounded out of a gate beside the road, ready to pounce on Billy. They were followed by poodles, collies, St. Bernards, and all manner of dogs, both great and small. Billy thought he had never seen so many dogs of different breeds in one place in all his life.

  • Ghosts I have Met and Some Others

"Never mind that," she returned. "Come at once." So, with the lather on one cheek and a cut on the other, I went below.

    "What's the matter?" I asked.
"Look at that!" she said, pointing to my grandmother's hair sofa, which stood in the hall just outside of my library door. It had been black when we last saw it, but as I looked I saw that a great change had come over it.

  • The $30,000 Bequest and Other Stories

The good old gentlewomen sat paralyzed, pulverized, outraged, insulted, and brooded in bitterness and indignation over these blasphemies. They were hurt to the heart, poor old ladies, and said they could never forgive these injuries.

    “Reform!”
They kept repeating that word resentfully. “Reform--and learn to tell lies!”

  • The Portrait of a Lady

Isabel felt some emotion, for she had always thought highly of her

grandmother’s house. But the emotion was of a kind which led her to say:
“I should like very much to go to Florence.”
“Well, if you’ll be very good, and do everything I tell you I’ll take
    you there,” Mrs. Touchett declared.

  • The Strange Story Book

Her grandmother would insist on Aurore coming to assure her that it was really two o'clock, as Julie had told her, for she did not believe it and the girl's presence always soothed her, and the old lady would murmur a few tender words and send her back to bed. At times, when Madame Dupin had a restless fit, Aurore would be summoned two or three times over.

  • Charlotte Temple

George came home early to enquire after his mother's health, staid with them but a few minutes, seemed greatly agitated at parting, but gave them strict charge to keep up their spirits. In about two hours after, they heard a loud rap at the door, which Lucy running to open, she met the bleeding body of her brother, borne in by two men who had lifted him from a litter.
