What happens when kidney failure suddenly turns your life upside down?

Award-winning DJ and broadcaster DJ Ace, now part of the KISS network, where he presents across KISS XTRA and KISSTORY R&B, shares his powerful kidney journey — from an unexpected kidney disease diagnosis and starting dialysis, to receiving a life-changing kidney transplant from a living donor he had never previously met.

Ace has built a successful career in music and broadcasting, performing internationally and supporting artists including Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Lil’ Kim. He has also championed UK R&B and co-created and hosts the popular Cut the Chat podcast.

But behind that successful public career was something many of his listeners didn’t know.

Originally recorded in 2022, when Ace was a presenter on BBC Radio 1Xtra, this conversation reveals the reality of living with kidney failure while trying to maintain a demanding career in radio and music.

Ace was diagnosed with diabetes when he was around 20 years old. Years later, what he thought was severe back pain led to blood tests that revealed his kidney function had fallen dramatically. Within months, he was receiving haemodialysis three times a week.

In this episode, Ace speaks candidly about trying to maintain his career as a DJ and radio presenter while undergoing dialysis, why he initially didn’t want people to know about his kidney disease, and the physical and emotional impact of trying to make dialysis fit around the life he had before.

He also shares the extraordinary story of how his living kidney donor, Naomi, came forward. Although they had never met, a mutual connection brought their stories together — and testing revealed that she was a direct match.

The conversation also explores organ donation within the Black community, medical mistrust, misinformation, the importance of talking openly about kidney disease, and why Ace decided to use his public platform to raise awareness.
