  • Episode 89: Weight Loss and Kidney Disease: GLP-1 Medications, Diet & Bariatric Surgery with Dr Sam

Can you safely lose weight when you are living with chronic kidney disease (CKD)? And what medical weight management options may be available when diet and exercise alone are not enough?

In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by Dr Sam, Consultant in Diabetes and Weight Management, for an informative conversation about obesity, weight loss and the particular challenges of managing weight while living with kidney disease.

For people living with CKD, weight management can be complicated. Reduced mobility, fatigue, fluid retention, dietary restrictions and certain medications can all affect weight and appetite. For some kidney patients, losing weight may also become particularly important when preparing for kidney transplantation.

Dee and Dr Sam discuss the stigma surrounding obesity and challenge the assumption that being overweight is simply the result of laziness or lack of willpower. Dr Sam explains why weight management is complex and why people seeking support should be treated with dignity rather than judgement.

    They explore:

    • Obesity and the stigma surrounding weight

    • Why people gain weight and the role of diet, physical activity and other factors
    • Why losing weight can be particularly difficult with chronic kidney disease
    • Fluid retention and its effect on body weight
    • Kidney diets and the challenges of balancing dietary restrictions with weight management
    • Medications that can increase appetite or contribute to weight gain
    • Steroids such as prednisolone and their potential impact on weight
    • Specialist weight management clinics and the support they can provide
    • Medical treatments for weight loss
    • GLP-1 receptor agonist medications and how they work
    • Liraglutide and semaglutide
    • The use of GLP-1 medications in people living with CKD
    • Kidney function and considerations when prescribing weight loss medication
    • Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery
    • The potential benefits and risks of bariatric surgery
    • Weight management support and resources for kidney patients
    • Why individualised care is so important

Dr Sam also explains how GLP-1 receptor agonists work by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone involved in appetite and feelings of fullness, and discusses the considerations healthcare professionals make when assessing whether these treatments may be appropriate for someone living with kidney disease.

The conversation also looks beyond medication to bariatric surgery, specialist dietetic support and lifestyle changes, emphasising that there is no single approach that is right for everybody.

Most importantly, this episode offers a message of hope. If weight management has become difficult while living with CKD, there may be options and professional support available.

  • Episode 88: Vasculitis & Sudden Kidney Failure: Laura’s Story of Dialysis, Recovery & Hope

What happens when kidney failure arrives with almost no warning?

In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore speaks with kidney patient Laura, whose life changed dramatically after seemingly unrelated symptoms eventually led to the discovery that her kidney function had fallen to less than 5%.

Laura had been experiencing extreme tiredness, feeling unusually cold, breathlessness, a persistent cough and other symptoms, but like many people, she found explanations for each one. She was busy, she was a mom, she was working and she didn’t want to bother her doctor.

But when her health continued to deteriorate, Laura went to A&E. Blood tests revealed severe kidney failure and dangerously high potassium levels.

A kidney biopsy eventually identified the cause: vasculitis, an autoimmune condition that had attacked her kidneys.

Laura spent a month in hospital and became critically ill. She experienced a haemorrhage in her lungs, difficulty breathing and was admitted to intensive care, where she was placed in an induced coma. Her treatment included dialysis and plasma exchange.

Remarkably, Laura’s kidney function improved from around 2% to above 15%, allowing her to leave hospital without continuing dialysis.

In this powerful conversation, Dee and Laura discuss:

    • The symptoms Laura experienced before her kidney failure diagnosis

    • Why kidney disease symptoms can be so easy to dismiss
    • Extreme fatigue, feeling cold, breathlessness and a persistent cough
    • Why Laura initially didn’t want to “bother” her doctor
    • Discovering her kidney function was below 5%
    • Being diagnosed with vasculitis following a kidney biopsy
    • Becoming critically ill and being admitted to intensive care
    • Experiencing a lung haemorrhage and being placed in an induced coma
    • Starting dialysis as an inpatient
    • Plasma exchange treatment
    • Kidney function improving enough for Laura to come off dialysis
    • Why starting dialysis does not always mean someone will remain on dialysis permanently
    • Coming to terms with a sudden kidney disease diagnosis
    • The emotional and psychological impact of critical illness
    • Protecting your family while also needing support yourself
    • Counselling, kidney patient communities and peer support
    • Dee’s 1 to 10 strategy for communicating how she feels to her children
    • Laura’s advice for people newly diagnosed with kidney disease
    • Finding strength and hope after a life changing diagnosis
    • Raising awareness and supporting the kidney community

Laura’s experience is also an important reminder to listen to your body. Kidney disease can sometimes present through symptoms that are easily attributed to everyday life or other conditions. Persistent or unexplained changes in your health deserve medical attention.

For anyone newly diagnosed with kidney disease, Laura offers a powerful message: you are not alone. Your health journey may not be linear, and difficult days may come, but how you feel today does not necessarily determine how you will feel in the future.

  • Episode 87: 10 Signs of Kidney Disease You Shouldn’t Ignore | Symptoms Explained by Aunty Pat

Could your body be showing signs of kidney disease without you realising it?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can develop with few obvious symptoms, and some of the signs that do appear can easily be mistaken for everyday health problems.

In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by the much-loved “Aunty of the podcast”, Pat Simoyi BEM, Advanced Practitioner of Kidney Disease, to explore 10 signs that may be associated with kidney disease and why persistent or unexplained symptoms should not simply be ignored.

Aunty Pat explains the possible kidney connection behind:

    • Blood in your urine

    • Puffy eyes, swollen ankles and swollen feet
    • Foamy urine
    • Tiredness and brain fog
    • Poor appetite
    • Nausea
    • Needing to urinate more frequently
    • Dry, itchy skin
    • Muscle cramps
    • Sleep problems

Dee and Aunty Pat discuss why blood may appear in the urine, including blood that cannot necessarily be seen with the naked eye, and why unexplained blood in your urine needs medical investigation.

They explore how damaged kidneys can allow protein to leak into the urine, potentially causing foamy urine, and why problems with fluid balance can contribute to puffiness around the eyes and swelling of the ankles and feet.

The conversation also looks at symptoms that are particularly easy to dismiss.

Tired all the time? Struggling to concentrate? Not feeling hungry? Experiencing nausea, itching, cramps or difficulty sleeping?

There can be many causes for these symptoms, and experiencing them does not automatically mean that you have kidney disease. However, Aunty Pat explains why persistent or unexplained changes deserve attention, particularly if you have risk factors for CKD.

The episode also explores why someone with declining kidney function may actually begin urinating more frequently, despite the common assumption that kidney failure must always mean producing less urine.

Aunty Pat’s message is simple but powerful:

    “The kidneys don’t shout.”

Kidney problems can progress quietly, with the body giving subtle clues along the way. Recognising those clues, understanding your personal risk and seeking appropriate medical advice can help kidney disease to be identified and managed earlier.

This conversation is particularly important if you:

    • Have a family history of kidney disease

    • Live with diabetes
    • Have high blood pressure
    • Have noticed persistent or unexplained changes in your health
    • Want to better understand the possible signs and symptoms of CKD
    • Support someone living with kidney disease

Knowing the symptoms is not about self-diagnosing. It is about being informed enough to ask questions about your health.

🎧 Listen now and share this episode with someone who needs to know the signs.

  • Episode 86: Protect Your Veins: Why Vein Preservation Matters in Kidney Disease with Dr Jeremy Crane

If you are living with kidney disease, protecting your veins today could make an important difference to your future dialysis treatment.

In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by Dr Jeremy Crane, Consultant Transplant and Vascular Surgeon, to discuss vein preservation, vascular access, fistulas and the Save Your Vein campaign.

Why does it matter where blood is taken from? What happens to veins after repeated blood tests? And why might the veins in your arms one day become your lifeline?

Dr Crane explains how an arteriovenous fistula (AV fistula) is created for haemodialysis and why healthy veins are so important when planning vascular access. He describes a fistula as a “super vein” – a vein strengthened by increased blood flow so that it can withstand the repeated needling required for haemodialysis.

The conversation explores why people living with kidney disease may be advised to protect the veins around the elbow crease and, where appropriate, ask healthcare professionals to consider taking blood from the back of the hand instead.

Dee and Dr Crane also discuss:

    • Why vein preservation matters for people living with kidney disease

    • How repeated blood tests can affect veins
    • What an AV fistula is and how it is used during haemodialysis
    • Why the veins around the elbow may be needed for future vascular access
    • The Save Your Vein campaign and why it was created
    • Whether blood tests from the back of the hand are more painful
    • What to do if a healthcare professional is reluctant to take blood from the hand
    • Why vein preservation can still matter if you choose peritoneal dialysis (PD) or receive a kidney transplant
    • Why avoiding unnecessary duplicate blood tests can also help protect your veins
    • What to consider if blood cannot be taken from the back of the hand
    • Why protecting both arms may be important when planning future fistula access
    • How kidney patients can advocate for themselves and become more involved in decisions about their care

One of the key messages from this conversation is that vein preservation is not simply about what you need today. It is about future-proofing your vascular access.

As Dr Crane explains, treatment pathways can change. Someone may have peritoneal dialysis, receive a kidney transplant and later require haemodialysis. Preserving suitable veins now may therefore help keep future treatment options open.

For someone receiving haemodialysis, a functioning fistula can become a lifeline. Protecting your veins before you need them matters.

🎧 Listen to the full conversation to learn more about vein preservation and the practical steps people living with kidney disease can discuss with their kidney care team.

Important: The information shared in Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast is for general education and awareness and should not replace personalised medical advice. Decisions about blood tests, vascular access and vein preservation should be discussed with your healthcare team, taking your individual circumstances into account.

  • Episode 85: Home Dialysis & the Cost of Living: Are Kidney Patients Being Priced Out of Treatment? | Phoenix Halliwell

For people receiving dialysis at home, rising household bills can mean much more than worrying about the cost of heating or electricity. Energy and water are essential to their medical treatment.

In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by kidney patient and campaigner Phoenix Halliwell to discuss the financial realities of home dialysis and the Priced Out of Existence campaign.

Phoenix shares how concerns about reimbursement for the electricity used to run home haemodialysis equipment led him to investigate the actual cost of his treatment. After discovering that the reimbursement he received did not cover his costs, he began campaigning alongside Kidney Care UK to raise awareness of the financial pressures facing people who dialyse at home.

    The conversation explores:

    • The hidden electricity and water costs of home dialysis

    • Why adequate reimbursement for home dialysis matters
    • The impact of rising energy bills on people living with kidney failure
    • Being forced to choose between heating, eating and essential medical treatment
    • Phoenix’s experience of cutting household costs while continuing dialysis
    • The physical and psychological consequences of potentially losing the ability to dialyse at home
    • Home haemodialysis compared with treatment in a dialysis centre
    • Why some patients may need more frequent or longer dialysis sessions at home
    • Financial support and the challenges facing people who rely on medical equipment
    • The changes Phoenix would like to see for people using essential medical equipment at home
    • Why kidney patients should speak to their renal unit or NHS Trust about appropriate reimbursement

Phoenix also explains why the issue goes beyond household finances. For someone whose dialysis equipment must run for many hours each week, electricity is not simply another household expense. It enables life-sustaining treatment.

The possibility of being unable to afford home dialysis can affect independence, family life, mental wellbeing and potentially the way someone receives their treatment.

This powerful conversation highlights why people living with kidney failure should not be left personally funding the additional utility costs of essential dialysis treatment at home.

Phoenix’s final message to people living with disabilities and long-term health conditions is one of advocacy and solidarity: keep speaking up, make your voices heard and continue fighting for change.

🎧 Listen to the full episode and share it with someone who may benefit from this conversation.

If you receive dialysis at home and have concerns about reimbursement or the costs associated with your treatment, speak with your kidney care team or renal unit about the support available in your individual circumstances.

  • Episode 84: CKD in Primary Care: Early Detection, eGFR, Urine ACR & Kidney Health with Dr Javeria Peracha

What role does primary care play in detecting and managing chronic kidney disease? What does your eGFR mean? Why is a urine ACR test important? And when should someone with CKD be referred to a kidney specialist?

In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by Dr Javeria Peracha, Renal Registrar and Clinical Research Fellow, to explore chronic kidney disease (CKD) in primary care and the vital role that GPs and primary care teams can play in early detection, monitoring and management.

Dr Javeria explains the tests used to assess kidney health, including eGFR and urine ACR (albumin-to-creatinine ratio), and why looking at both blood and urine results can provide important information about kidney function and kidney damage.

    This conversation explores:

    • The role of primary care in kidney health

    • Who should be tested for chronic kidney disease
    • Blood and urine tests for CKD
    • What eGFR tells us about kidney function
    • Why urine ACR and proteinuria matter
    • Why trends in kidney function are important
    • Diabetes and high blood pressure as risk factors for CKD
    • When someone with CKD may need referral to a kidney specialist
    • The Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE)
    • Assessing the risk of CKD progressing to kidney failure
    • Blood pressure management and protecting kidney function
    • Treatments that can help slow CKD progression
    • CKD and cardiovascular disease
    • Other causes of kidney disease
    • Health inequalities in kidney disease
    • How patients can become more involved in understanding and managing their kidney health

A key message from this episode is the importance of knowing your numbers.

Rather than simply being told that your kidney results are “fine”, understanding your eGFR, urine ACR and how your results are changing over time can help you have more informed conversations with your GP, primary care team and kidney specialists.

Dr Javeria also discusses why identifying CKD early matters. Primary care can play a crucial role in recognising people at risk, arranging appropriate kidney tests, monitoring kidney function, managing risk factors and identifying when specialist renal input may be needed.

Chronic kidney disease can sometimes progress without obvious symptoms. That makes early detection, appropriate testing and ongoing monitoring in primary care particularly important.

🎧 Listen to the full episode to learn more about CKD in primary care, kidney function tests, eGFR, urine ACR, KFRE, CKD risk factors and protecting kidney health.

If you have concerns about your kidney health or test results, speak with your GP, kidney team or another appropriate healthcare professional for advice based on your individual circumstances.
