Christmas can be a joyful time, but when you’re living with kidney disease, dialysis, waiting for a transplant or supporting someone with CKD, the festive season can bring its own challenges.
In this special episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee is joined by former guest Moe (Episode 144) to share heartfelt messages of hope, strength, encouragement and gratitude from across the kidney community.
Kidney patients, transplant recipients, donors, podcast listeners, healthcare professionals and members of the Kidney Care UK team share messages reflecting on what it means to keep going through the difficult days, find joy in the small moments and remember that you are not alone.
The conversation explores the realities of living with kidney disease at Christmas, including the pressures of the festive season, life on dialysis, the uncertainty of waiting for a kidney transplant, gratitude for organ donors and donor families, the importance of friendship and community, and the contribution of renal nurses and other healthcare professionals.
You’ll also hear powerful experiences of kidney transplantation and living donation, including people whose lives and families have been transformed through the gift of a kidney.
Above all, this is an episode about hope.
As Moe reminds us, living with CKD may be difficult, but it is not the end. Dee leaves listeners with a message to keep holding on to hope, even when the light feels very small.
Whether you are living with kidney disease yourself, supporting someone you love, undergoing dialysis, waiting for a transplant, living with a donated kidney or working within kidney care, this episode is a reminder of the strength and community surrounding you.

Christmas can be beautiful… and heavy—especially when you’re living with kidney disease. In this special seasonal episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast (in partnership with Kidney Care UK), host Dee Moore is joined by two renal counsellors, Sarah and Paula, to talk honestly about the emotional realities of the holiday season and how kidney patients (and loved ones) can navigate it with more calm, support, and hope.
Together, we explore why Christmas can bring a mix of emotions—from joy and community to grief, exhaustion, overwhelm, and pressure—especially when you’re balancing dialysis, medication side effects, fatigue, and changing family expectations.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
✅ Why Christmas can feel emotionally challenging (and also uplifting) with chronic illness
✅ A powerful way to think about kidney disease during the holidays: the “uninvited guest” analogy
✅ How hope helps you keep going—and what to do when you can’t generate hope yourself
✅ The mental health benefits of gratitude, including simple “top and tail” daily practices
✅ Practical coping strategies: cutting the “Christmas fluff,” planning ahead, protecting your energy, and taking 5-minute self-care resets
✅ Permission to do Christmas your way (yes—even if you hate turkey!)
If this season feels hard, please remember: you’re not alone. You don’t have to carry everything by yourself. Be gentle with your body, be kind to your mind, and take things one moment at a time.

And what options are actually on the table if you’re living with CKD, on dialysis or post-transplant?

•Non-hormonal options for hot flushes, night sweats, mood and sleep
•Period changes on haemodialysis and after transplant
•Bone health, osteoporosis risk and steroids
•Fibroids, endometriosis, early menopause and hysterectomy in the context of CKD
•How to advocate for yourself with your GP, renal team and menopause services
You’ll also hear a powerful call from Dr Vikram for better research that truly includes women with CKD, especially those from ethnic minority backgrounds – and why your story and participation matter.

What happens when chronic kidney disease has been part of your life for more than 30 years — and you’ve spent much of that time believing you’ll never need dialysis or a kidney transplant?
In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee speaks with Louise Fletcher about her journey from being diagnosed with IgA nephropathy in her early twenties to kidney failure and eventually receiving the kidney transplant she affectionately named “Katie the Kidney”.
Louise’s story begins during an incredibly difficult period of her life. While investigations into her kidney health were taking place, she discovered she was pregnant. Her son was born prematurely at 32 weeks and sadly lived for just six days. Shortly afterwards, a kidney biopsy led to Louise being diagnosed with IgA nephropathy.
For decades, Louise says she largely “put it in a box”. Kidney disease didn’t appear to stop her living her life: she worked, travelled and even became a fitness instructor. But as her kidney function eventually declined, the possibility she had always resisted became very real — kidney replacement therapy.
Louise shares how she faced the prospect of dialysis, went through the kidney transplant assessment process and joined the transplant waiting list. Just seven months later, the call came.
She takes Dee inside the unforgettable experience of receiving her transplant — from learning about her donor to actually seeing “Katie” arrive at the hospital and travelling to theatre with the donated kidney at the end of her bed.
Louise also talks candidly about delayed graft function, her recovery after transplantation and the physical changes she began noticing after receiving her new kidney.
But this conversation goes beyond transplantation.
Louise reflects on the emotional impact of living with kidney disease, why she wishes she had engaged more with her diagnosis during those 30 years, the importance she places on looking after mental and emotional wellbeing, and what she would say to someone who is frightened of dialysis or transplantation.
Her message to people living with kidney disease is simple: a diagnosis does not define who you are. It is part of your story.
🎧 Listen to the full conversation to hear Louise’s remarkable journey from IgA nephropathy and kidney failure to transplantation, hope and life with Katie the Kidney.
