Dickinson's "Knowledge for Freedom" seminar aims to give HS seniors timely lessons through history

Listen Later

Dickinson College's House Divided Project, which examines the Civil War and Reconstruction, is hosting a college-level seminar for high school seniors to explore questions of freedom, democracy and self-government. The free, three-week program is called Knowledge for Freedom and includes trips to Washington D.C., Gettysburg and the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg. It's aimed at low-income and first generation college-bound students.
Applications for the July seminar are being accepted until May 15 -- this Sunday.
This is the second year for the seminar that exposes students to texts about the abolition of slavery and the multi-faceted fight for freedom in the U.S.
We learn more about Knowledge for Freedom on Tuesday's Smart Talk from Matthew Pinsker, professor of history at Dickinson College and director of the House Divided Project, which is hosting the Knowledge for Freedom seminar, Todd Mealy, a historian and teacher at Penn Manor High School in Millersville, and Etsub Taye, a student at Penn Manor who participated in last summer’s Knowledge for Freedom seminar at Dickinson.
