Did You Ever See?

Welp! Hell of a time to do our America Rah-Rah movie month. Look, this week we're doing Born on the Fourth of July: the Oliver Stone film starring Tom Cruise, based on the real story of Vietnam Vet and Peace Activist Ron Kevin. We're also talking... well... you know...

Born on the Fourth of July was directed by Oliver Stone. Screenplay was written by Ron Kevin, based on his autobiography of the same name. It tells the story of a young American in the 1960s who enlists in the Marines to fight the North Vietnamese Army. He saw it as his solemn duty to his beloved America. And then a bullet put him in a wheelchair, and his journey from jingoist American Son to Peace Activist (same thing if you ask us) had begun. It's a masterpiece and a very important film for times like these.

Question of the week is: This land

June Claude Van Damme continues apace with 1992's UNIVERSAL SOLDIER, starring JCVD, Dolph Lundgren, Ally Walker, and more! We will also be discussing the Winner of the JCVD Question of the Week! Here's the link to The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (as discussed on the show this week).

Universal Soldier is a science fiction/action film starring Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as military enemies-turned-zombie soldiers (???) who then face off AGAIN, but this time in the future (kind of???)!!! Directed by Roland Emmerich (his American debut), it's his first in a long string of big budget action films. Emmerich went on to direct Independence Day, 2012, the Matthew Broderick Godzilla, and much much more!

JCVD Month continues with a rather controversial flick: TIME COP. It's one of those Either You Like It Or You Don'ts. And we.... well... we have mixed feelings.

Released September 16th, 1994, Time Cop sees the career of Jean Claude van Damme rising further and further. It details the whirlwind journey of a police officer in the year 2004 (!!!) who is recruited into a new agency that regulates this new-fangled time travel thingy. And, yes, EVIL POLITICIANS ABOUND!

It was a pretty big hit and launched JCVD, sadly, straight towards the end of his 80s/90s career. Don't worry: he continued onwards. Check it out!

New month, new genre. And this one KICKS BUTTS! Join Phillip and Michael as they dive headfirst into JUNE CLAUDE VAN DAMME with Bloodsport!

Frank Dux: LIAR

Bloodsport was released on February 26th, 1988 and kickstarted the burgeoning career of a young Jean Claude van Damme. During this time period, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were considered the reigning champs of action films. But as the 1980s continued into the 1990s, two action stars showed up to challenge Arnie and Sly: JCVD and Steven Seagal. These are two of the most controversial action stars. Some people would say Van Damme is the best. Sadly, some (including Michael) would say Seagal is the best.

This month, we are all about JCVD. We're starting it all off with one of his most classic films. Bloodsport was based on the story of Frank Dux. Now, Frank Dux is a real person. His story of fighting in an underground tournament in the Kowloon Walled City? Probably (almost certainly) false!

Either way, it's a classic. Check it out!
