  • #29 | B. Jeffrey Madoff: building a creative career that lasts

Mr. Madoff tells us all about his new book “Creative Careers” in this episode.

The book features insider advice from Daymond John, Karlie Kloss, Tim Ferriss, Randi Zuckerberg, Dave Asprey, Dennis Crowley, Brandon Maxwell, Mauro Porcini, Joy-Ann Reid, Roy Wood Jr., and dozens more.

In one of the most popular classes at Parsons School of Design, B. Jeffrey Madoff gave students a reality check: “Most of us have had the feeling of ‘I could’ve done that,’ whether at an art gallery, watching a performance, or finding a new product or even a new business idea. What’s the difference between you and them? They actually did it. You didn’t.”

With Creative Careers, you will learn how to do it, too: use your creativity; have a sustainable, profitable career; and do what you love.Creative Careers pulls from interviews with more than forty experts–notable entrepreneurs, artists, and business leaders–as well as from Madoff’s own decades of experience to supercharge your career.

Creativity can often feel sporadic and unfocused, coming in bursts and peaks. That’s why Madoff focuses your professional path by asking vital questions that will ultimately help you:

    Determine your value

    Be smart about your hustle

Ruthlessly edit down your creative projects

    Overcome fear and doubt

Create a successful, long-lasting career on your own terms

You may aspire to join the fashion world, to work in visual arts, or to spearhead a start-up. You may be an executive who leads a creative team, or a professional looking to make a career change. Madoff takes you down an accessible path that will lead to success in any field or endeavor.

  • #27 | Escaping Fidel Castro's Cuba

Margarita de Quesada and her now-late husband Armando fled Fidel Castro’s brutal communist regime by hiding away on a British cargo ship headed for Canada.

Two years before their escape, bad things were brewing in Cuba, and Margarita and Armando saw the writing on the wall. They sent their two children on a plane headed for Miami to stay with relatives, as part of Operation Peter Pan. Operation Peter Pan was a clandestine mass exodus of over 14.000 unaccompanied Cuban minors, ages 6 to 18 to the United States over a two-year period from 1960 to 1962. This program allowed Cuban parents to get their children away from the communist brainwashing that occurred in schools.

Fidel Castro took power in 1959, declared himself a Marxist, and instituted a communist government. Confiscating businesses and property, he used firing squads and imprisonment of more than 15.000 dissidents to take control. Margarita’s brother, Carlos Valls, was fatally shot while pushing back against the regime.

In this incredible interview, we talk about what life was like in Cuba before Castro’s reign, how things gradually descended into hell under communism, the escape to Canada, and eventually the entry to the United States.

The podcast concludes with a piece of original music called “Adios.” Margarita wrote this while she was hiding in a cargo ship as she left her home country behind forever. She has published several classical guitar albums under the name of Margo Valls, her nickname/maiden name.

  • #25 | Dub FX: the street performer who built a global music career

Born in St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia, Benjamin Stanford, better known as Dub FX, started his music career singing in a local alternative rock and rapcore band initially known as Twitch, which would later change its name to Never or Now. After they released a debut album in 2004, Benjamin moved to Italy and began a solo career.

His trademark became creating rich live music using only his own performance aided by live looping and effects pedals combined with his voice. Using this set-up, he creates hip hop, reggae, and drum and bass rhythms. Dub FX collaborates on some tracks with other musicials like saxophonist Mr. Woodnote.

Dub FX’s lyrics address both general world events and contemporary angst, while suggesting individual-based revolution through self-determination and engagement.

The latest album “Roots” is available on all the music streaming platforms. It’s one of the most original albums I’ve heard in a while, and I highly recommend you listening to it.

Dub FX currently resides in Victoria, Australia with his wife and two children.

  • #23 | Octavius: one Rasta's journey

Octavius and I met in 2011 at an open mic night at Seville Quarter in Pensacola, Florida. I was an exchange student there at the time. We quickly became friends after we jammed on stage (Octavius on lead vocals, me on guitar, Chris Ozuna on drums, and someone I didn’t know on bass). Through the years, we kept in touch by giving each other a call once or twice a year. We met again in 2018, when Octavius attended my wedding.

Octavius gave up a stable life in Texas to travel all over the United States on a journey to inspire, enlighten and lift people up. He sold and gave away all of his material posessions, bought a train ticket, and headed West. We talk about this incredible journey at length, as well as Octavius’ life story of music, the meaning of life, what makes people tick, how he inspires everyone around him, and doing hard time.
