David Hernandez started loving poetry as a student here. Many years later, he became a finalist for one of the most prestigious awards as an author: a National Book Critics Circle Award. Hernandez talks about his book, his journey through poetry, how he writes a good poem, and what it means to be a teacher.
Have you ever been in love? Or at least, have you ever thought you were in love? Morgan has been there. Almost exactly a year ago, she was in a Jubilee video about her experience being cheated on, twice. The most humbling experience of her life was broadcasted for over a million people to see. And now she's here on this show, talking about whatever it means to be in love. Or a specific part of it: infatuation.
Hey, this is Rachel Livinal, one of your co-hosts on POV So I have something to confess. I’m graduating in May. I, with many others, will not be walking the stage or hearing my name called at graduation. But, I’m not upset really about the whole walking thing, because everyone does that. What I’m really upset about, if I’m being honest, is to be called with the honors after my name. You know, the “summa cum laude?” Pretentious I know. But I just wanted to be… special. This episode, we're going to talk about jealousy.
You’re probably hearing this somewhat close to the end of the semester. You may be experiencing something that almost anyone can understand at first glance: burnout. We're going to tell you about it.
Laurie and Dave are my parents. 9 years ago, they got married after a whirlwind of connection and reconnection that turned from friends to more. After being long distance for a total of 13 ½ years, the couple is learning what it’s like to have some sense of normalcy. The couple talk about how they got here, and what they're planning for the future now that they're together full-time.
This episode features another special guest, my partner, and another 15 minutes of content!
Laurie Ladrech is a T-K teacher in the Bay Area. Dave Ladrech is a hair-dresser also in the Bay Area.
In society, our identities matter. Our identities impact the way that we navigate the world. They are a lot more complicated than simply labels we check off on surveys. And sometimes, figuring out exactly which ones to check off can be a task that’s easier said than done. Host Morgan Barela explores the topic of white passing, including her personal experiences as a white passing person of color.
I bet you think you’re a good person. But what does it mean to be good? Is your definition of good the same definition as ours? Is good measured by the acts we do or is it by how nice we are? We could go down a rabbit hole on this, but let’s just start with this funky word we’ve heard since grade school when looking to get a gold star: altruism.

Leg warmers, low-waisted jeans, neutral colors, puffy jackets. We recorded this episode in the fall. Those were the fashion items that lined the walls of Pacsun, stormed the front web page of Fashion Nova. Now, those things may not be in. No one may be wearing them. So, were those things ever popular? Did they ever really have significance?
