Dr Rebecca Simons bio

I am a historian of early modern piracy, Colonial America, the Atlantic World, and maritime history. I earned my PhD from King’s College London in 2017. My dissertation, entitled: “The Crimes of Piracy and its Punishment: The Performance of Maritime Supremacy in the British Atlantic World, 1670 – 1830,” examines British maritime and legal supremacy in its early American colonies in regards to maritime piracy. I use the public executions of pirates in London and the Americas as my narrative to see how the colonists reacted to increased legal restrictions by British authorities, which ultimately led to new ideas of autonomy.

My first book, Why We Love Pirates: The Hunt for Captain Kidd and How He Changed Piracy Forever (Mango Press, 2020), discusses transformation of real pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy from their authentic history into pop culture phenomenons today.

My other research interests include Colonial American history, legal history in the Americas, settler societies, polite society, crime, punishments, and death in the early modern world.

I have appeared on podcasts such as You’re Dead To Me hosted by Greg Jenner, History Hit by Dan Snow, and Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness. I have written about my research for various blogs and History Today. I have been featured on the Netflix docu-drama The Lost Pirate Kingdom, the BBC4 documentary, Britain’s Outlaws, and the History Channel shows The Curse of Oak Island and Beyond Oak Island.

There have been moments in history where a single determined person, natural event, or battle changed the entire course of history, forcing destiny down one path instead of another, forever changing what occurred afterward.  This podcast explores fascinating examples of these history shaping phenomena. 

Robert Mills is an avid mountain climber, world adventurer, writer, and amateur historian.  After building the largest secondary market partnership securities platform, Robert led the Mills Law Firm, his nationwide consumer class action law firm, in initiating cases that, with the assistance of other firms, recovered billions of dollars for defrauded American consumers.  

Mr. Mills was an Angel Flight pilot for over 20 years, donating the costs and time to personally fly indigent patients from remote locations in the West to metropolitan medical centers for treatment.  Since his retirement from law, Robert has served on the management boards of two non-profits, San Francisco City Guides, where he leads three history tours of San Francisco, and the California Solar Rights Alliance, where he serves as treasurer and lobbies in Sacramento for green solar energy legislation. 

Since his childhood, Robert has loved climbing mountains all over the world.  He has summited 56 of the 57 Ultra Prominent Peaks (the “biggest” mountains, whose summits are over 5,000 feet above their base) in the Continental United States.  Robert has written guest essays, including one for the San Francisco Chronicle, and has published articles and done podcasts on a number of topics, mostly related to history and mountains.  Robert and his wife, Miriam, have traveled widely throughout the world, including Robert piloting them all over Alaska and to almost every nation in South America. 

Together with their two dogs, Robert and Miriam live in “grandparent heaven” near their two new grandsons, “Pax” and “Robby K”, in San Rafael, California.

John Opdycke is the President of Open Primaries. He is an activist and strategist with 25 years of experience working in independent, alternative and reform politics. He is one of the country’s most visible and vocal advocates for primary reform.

 

Opdycke began his career as a fundraiser and researcher for the Rainbow Lobby, which advocated for ballot access and debate reform in the United States and supported the pro-democracy movement in the Congo (Zaire). In 1992, he joined Dr. Lenora Fulani's independent campaign for president as a regional fundraising director, and in 1994 assisted Dr. Fulani in her campaign against Mario Cuomo in the New York Democratic Party gubernatorial primary. That same year, he participated in the founding of the New York State Independence Party, a state affiliate of the National Reform Party. In 1998, became the director of development of Independentvoting.org, and between 1999 and 2014 expanded Independentvoting.org's fundraising from $50,000 to $1 million annually.

 

He has appeared on Fox News, MSNBC, Al Jazeera, Cheddar TV, PBS, and NBC and his written commentary on the subject of independent politics and electoral reform has appeared in USA Today, Newsweek, The Hill, and dozens of local publications.

 

Opdycke performs and directs improvisation at the Castillo Theatre, a multi-racial home for black, political, and avant-garde performance in New York City. He grew up in Evanston, Illinois and attended the University of Michigan. He lives in New York City.
