  • Eurasian Jay

Eurasian Jay spotted near St Ann's Well Gardens in Hove, UK.

Was invited out for a dawn chorus walk on the first Sunday of May, apparently a traditional day to do this sort of thing. On the way back this lovely bird followed me for a while.

  • First Flowers: Early Blue Violet

Note: I'd photographed the Shepherdia- previous short- thinking they were the first non-tree species to flower, then found this first patch of Violas with quite a few flowers suggesting they'd been flowering at least for a few days, so it's a toss-up as to which species was really first, but they are both early starters for the Latvian Time of Flowers season!

Spring can seem slow in the Boreal Forest- native plants are cautious as early warm spells come with still frosty nights and occasional snowfalls can continue well into May. The trees are the boldest, and poplar and willow catkins come early. Typically, the first herbaceous flowering plants show up in wetlands, the standing water from snowmelt nurturing the early shoots. This year, the winter snowfall was lower than average and melted and soaked in gradually, leaving very little standing water.

Perhaps for this reason (and there could be other micro-local issues around invasive grasses, timing and amount of seasonal cattle grazing, etc) this year the early wetland flowers are not so early relative to the woodland plants.

The two earliest plants generally are Petasites frigidus complex Sweet Coltsfoot and Caltha palustris Marsh Marigold, with the Petasites typically just a little quicker to start. This year, the Calthas are just beginning, but I haven't found a single Petasites in any of several sites. However, The Viola adunca Early Blue Violet is well underway- more typically they come after those others start.

  • First Flowers: Boreal Forest Spring Buffaloberry

It's been getting warmer here in Western Alberta-- we've got a few days from 20 to 26C/68-78F- though we've also had recent days not much over 10C/50F and nights have been near or below freezing till now (this week forecast mostly above). Native plants are a bit cautious in spring, wisely so. The trees put out catkins early, shrubs and herbaceous plants wait till the soil has warmed a bit more.

Shepherdia canadensis/ Canadian Buffaloberry is one of the very first things to flower after those first trees (Poplars- willows start early also, but there are more species and they go much longer than the Poplars). Flowers are very tiny, but there are lots of them, and they'll lead to bitter delicious berries later on. I
also found the first violets, but it was overcast when I shot the video and it's kinda blah, I'm gonna try to reshoot today if the sun holds!

We are right about at the Cross-quarter Day between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. In the Latvian pagan tradition, this marks the beginning of the Time of Flowers-- works for me here, too! My seasonal observances are very much about being out and noting the changes, feeling the beauty of each of the 8 seasonal markers. Now the bees are out and about, the land is beginning to green, have a Blessed Season! And a beautiful autumn to Southern friends!

  • Endymion Parade in Superdome NOLA 2025

At the end of the Endymion Parade on Saturday night, all the floats go into the Superdome, where there has been a party already going on with people at tables in formalware and bands appearing on stage. I jumped off my Odin float after going through, went back into the dome and took this video.

The interior is huge and all flat space on the floor and upper levels are covered with large round tables. The exception is an oval track where the floats come in from outside, go around and then exit. The stands are covered with people, most in the distance appear very small. From the floats, costumed riders throw trinkets, toys, shirts and collectibles. The floats are brightly lighted. Laser lights from the sides of the venue pan up down and side to side. Music blasts from the stage. Thousands of celebrants scream for "throws" from the floats. It is pandemonium.
