Director Showdown

Adam and Brent are finally back with this seasons Dealers Choice winner ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ with Erik Casarez! It’s the first ‘good’ movie of the 4 Dealer’s Choice competitions we’ve had so far, and the fellas enjoy getting into the nitty gritty of David Wain’s cult comedy classic! The first on-screen appearance of Bradley Cooper, the comedy style of Wain and his comedy troupe ‘The State’, as well as why Wet Hot American Summer was misunderstood at the time and the importance of ‘time and place’ to a films success. All these topics, as well as Tom Nook’s crooked business practices and tangents about loving Paul Rudd make this an all-time bonus ep! Thank you all for being patient with our release schedule, we’ll be getting back to a regular release cycle soon, what with having to stay indoors for the next 3+ months or so.

Adam and Brent finally wrap up season 7 with Bigelow’s acclaimed Bin Laden manhunt film ‘Zero Dark Thirty’! They get into the complicated legacy of the film, it’s depiction of torture scenes as well as the intense and realistic raid at the end of Zero Dark Thirty! Aside from that, they get into a brief ‘Chris Pratt Chat Corner’, talk Deuce Bigelow’s relation to Kathryn Bigelow, and an overall discussion and ranking for the season overall (with a few VERY surprising placements). Thank you all so incredibly much for listening to the show, telling your friends about it, and especially being patient during the few gaps we had between episodes (we’re busy boys with busy, chaotic lives!)

We’ll be back within a week or two with DIRECTOR SHOWDOWN DEALER’S CHOICE 4! We have no goddamn clue what it’ll be, so make sure you’re subscribed so it pops up in the feed!

It’s an episode filled with even more 2010 Oscar context, as well as discussions about the tropes of the movie and it’s many technological advancements. This one also has plenty of historical context from 2009! It’s our penultimate episode for this season, talking a potentially underrated modern action classic, so we hope you enjoy and thanks so much for listening!

They get into their personal histories with Titanic, it’s place in society as a huge cultural touchstone for generations, and the sexual awakenings caused by Leo DiCaprio. Some other topics are tangents into practical vs. digital VFX, balancing a romance with set pieces and how James Cameron used prior successes to become ‘king of the world’! It’s a wild episode, even by our standards, so enjoy and thanks for listening!

Adam and Brent are once again joined by friend David Rodriguez to discuss Kathryn Bigelow’s millenium-epic ‘Strange Days’! They talk the movies many themes, how it represents the era of late 90’s/early 2000’s , the ‘squid’ technology, and how it’s box office failure knocked her career off course for a decade. It’s a great, tangent-y talk about a very solid and under-seen/under-discussed movie, so we hope you watch it if you haven’t. As always, thank you for listening, and make sure to like, comment and subscribe to the pod wherever you get them and have a great Christmas and New Year!

PROGRAMMING NOTE: WE’LL BE TAKING A SHORT BREAK FOR CHRISTMAS AND (FITTINGLY ENDING ON THIS MOVIE) NEW YEARS. WE’LL BE BACK IN JANUARY WITH TITANIC!

Adam and Brent are kickstarting their return to Cameron V Bigelow with a look back with a ‘decade in review’! With 2020 quickly approaching, the guys picked their 10 favorite movies between the years 2010-2019, and count them down, talking about what they love about each one! After that, they take a moment to highlight their favorite directors of the decade, and their favorite year since 2010.
