Theodor Seuss Geisel was known by the pen name "Dr Seuss" because he was caught drinking gin during prohibition and was forced to write under a pseudonym in college. He was also an early "ad man" creating advertisements for major US oil companies, sugar makers and television networks. To say that Dr Seuss was an interesting citizen of Dirt Nap City is a major understatement!
In this special Christmas edition and season finale of Dirt Nap City, Alex and Kelly talk about the man who touched the lives of children all around the world. We look at his early drawings, his propaganda film, his work in advertising, art, and his controversial support of Japanese internment during World War II (which he later recanted).
Dr Seuss had no children of his own, saying of children: "You have 'em; I'll entertain 'em."

Ettore Boiardi became known as Chef Boyardee and changed the way that Americans cooked meals forever! He catered the wedding of an American president and supported the US troops during World War 2. Chef Boyardee was the first celebrity chef, way before the Food Network (or even television for that matter!). Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was the longest-serving First Lady throughout her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms in office (1933-1945). She was an American politician, diplomat, and activist who later served as a United Nations spokeswoman. But she was not without her detractors. After a traumatic childhood, she married her 5th cousin and ended up changing the job of First Lady in a way no one had imagined before. She was also rumored to have had affairs outside of her marriage and had controversial views for a woman of her time.
She was a pioneer in the use of radio as well as the press.
In this episode we explore this remarkable woman and the legacy that she left behind, both during her tenure as First Lady and after.

The Pilgrims, also known as the Pilgrim Fathers, were English settlers who came to North America on the Mayflower and established the Plymouth Colony in what is today Plymouth, Massachusetts. They were part of a religious congregations of Brownists, or Separatist Puritans, who had fled religious persecution in England.

But did you know that these people were not actually called "Pilgrims" until many centuries later? And that the modern American holiday of Thanksgiving was moved by Franklin D. Roosevelt to increase the number of shopping days before Christmas?
And that the first Thanksgiving wasn't all peace, love and pass the gravy? While the settlers at Plymouth and their allies from the Wampanoag tribe really did gather in 1621 for a three-day feast to celebrate the settlers' first successful harvest, that's far from the entire story.
