In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to futurist Manish Bahl about the daily deluge of information and the impact it has on society. They speak about information overload, the difference between misinformation and disinformation, and what steps governments, tech companies, and individuals can take to curb the spread of “fake news”. Should we regulate or educate? Who watches the watchdogs? It is a wide-ranging conversation that also delves into the tension between the wisdom and the madness of crowds, the myth of privacy, and the AI arms race to win the information wars.

'Who am I?' is one of the most fundamental questions of all. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to answer as technology enables us to negotiate and create many different versions of ourselves.
In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to fellow futurist Tracey Follows about her book “The Future of You: Can Your Identity Survive 21st-Century Technology?” Together they discuss the tension between the collective and the individual, and how our personal freedoms and potential will be transformed over the coming decades. In our digital, data-driven world, Facebook gets a say in verifying who we are, science can alter our biology, and advances in AI are revolutionizing not only how we interact online but with the physical world around us. From health passports and increased surveillance to bio-hacking and relationships with machines, we need to understand these vital issues today so that we might design the future of our identity tomorrow.

Why do property rights matter anyway? Is the South African expropriation bill really that big of a deal? And what do the proposed constitutional amendments really mean for ordinary citizens?
In the episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to CEO of the Center for Risk Analysis, Frans Cronje, about the current — and future — state of South Africa. It is a wide-ranging conversation that covers the highs of the Mbeki era, the psychology behind rejecting unpleasant information, South Africa’s debt crisis, the looming expropriation bill, and the ANC’s prospects for the 2024 elections.

In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to Dr Beth Singler, the Junior Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence at Homerton College, University of Cambridge. Together they explore the social, ethical, philosophical and religious implications of advances in Artificial Intelligence and robotics. Do we put too much faith in algorithms? How do different cultures respond to rapid technological change? They look at the dangers of AI entrenching inequality instead of alleviating it, the religious elements in the transhumanist movement, and the slight weirdness of the effective altruism community.

As the world keeps a close eye on the threat of climate change, the world’s superpowers are positioning themselves to take advantage of the new opportunities that will emerge from an ice-free Arctic — newly accessible trade routes, oil reserves, shifting fisheries, and strategic military positions. In this episode of The Small Print, Brownyn speaks to fellow futurist Tyler Mongan about how the great game of geopolitics may reach the arctic circle in the not so distant future. It is a wide-ranging conversation that also delves into the relationship between economic growth and sustainability, the role of individual responsibility in reducing our global carbon footprint, and the differences between trust and control-based systems.

Formal apartheid was abolished decades ago, yet rampant inequality remains a salient feature of South African society. Poor leadership, corruption, and cadre deployment are often cited as the reasons for the ANC’s failure to make progress in that regard. While one can acknowledge these factors, one legacy of apartheid that is often overlooked is its spatial legacy. Civil engineering may be value-neutral in theory, but those who design the plans are rarely free from ideology. In this episode of The TK Show, civil engineer and former public servant, Gundo Maswime, joins TK to discuss the lasting effects of infrastructure designed by the previous regime, the need to get more civil engineers to join the public sector, and the importance of preparing the next generation of civil engineers to understand the socio-political context in which they operate.

Whether it's losing a loved one or stubbing a toe, suffering is an inescapable part of life. But does it have to be? In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to philosopher and transhumanist David Pearce, who posits the radical idea that all forms of suffering should be abolished from every living creature on earth — and explains how genetic engineering and nanotechnology can make this ambitious project a reality.

David Pearce is a British philosopher of the negative utilitarian school of ethics. He believes and promotes the idea that there exists a strong ethical imperative for humans to work towards the abolition of suffering in all sentient life. His book-length internet manifesto "The Hedonistic Imperative" details how he believes the abolition of suffering can be accomplished through "paradise engineering". A transhumanist and a vegan, Pearce also calls for the elimination of cruelty to animals.

Have you heard of cultivated meat? Produced through cellular agriculture, cultivated meat is meat — grown directly from cells without the need to slaughter animals. What is the process behind it? Why would people want to eat it? Is it healthy? Who is working on it? In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to Brett Thompson, CEO of Mzansi Meat Co., Africa's first cultivated meat company. They have a wide-ranging conversation about what motivated him to start Mzansi Meat Co; the impact cultivated meat will have on our health, our society and our environment; the regulatory challenges of working in this new industry; and their quest to make burgers from President Ramaphosa’s Ankole cattle.

South Africa’s story is often presented as a triumph of new over old, but while formal apartheid was abolished decades ago, stark and distressing similarities persist. In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to Dr Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh about his latest book, “The New Apartheid”, in which he explores the edifice of systemic racial oppression that continues to thrive, despite or even because of our democratic system.
