Romantic
Faultless French language, will definitely test your knowledge. Beautiful scenes such as the mother protecting her newly found daughter and of course the inevitable romantic and sad ending. All this sometimes lost in hugo's dissertation on religion and passion. Hugo originally wrote the novel to convince Parisians to save the crumbling Notre Dame cathedral. He definitely achieved his goal as there is a 30 minute queue (at best) when visiting the cathedral. If you can put up with romanticism and are up to learning about medieval Paris then this book is for you. If you are a pragmatic, must-act, 21st century kind of person then this could be your worst nightmare. If you want to test your French you could still read the action packed passages or just read flaubaire or Maupassant.
Complex story. Slow reading
The core story is wonderful and complex. However, Hugo's description of Paris, both physically and historically is quite detailed to the point of being laborious and it makes following of the plot line much harder than it needs to be. The plot line of the story is often interrupted for several pages, at a time. Hugo does paint a beautiful word picture of Paris in such minutia that one could almost use it to build a model of the main roads, buildings, bridges and gates of that city. If a film maker stuck to the book's complete content for the movie script, the film would twice as long as any film so far made of this story.
Long, but satisfying.
Victor Hugo is one of, if not my favorite authors. The book was long and drawn-out much the same as Les Miserables, but it leaves you wanting nothing after you finish. The way Hugo writes is both sophisticated and visual, but not needlessly so as with some books. Some authors edit their books with a thesaurus in hand, but every word used in this book is essential to where it is placed. There are countless historical references that make the book that much more interesting and educational. It does make it longer though if you're like me and find interesting details and immediately need to look them up.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't mind classic literature and enjoys many, many details.
Un Classique
En: Beautiful, riveting and tragic.
A story full of love and sacrifice. This story promises happiness but it gives only tragedy and heartbreak. Though, even with this sadness, the novel affected me so much in good ways. This is an amazing classic that everyone should read.
