Publisher's Summary:
I would like to make myself the heroine of this story and my character to be noble - an innocent victim led astray. But alas, sir, I would be lying.
In prison, accused of murder, Tully Truegood begins to write her life story. A story that takes her from a young girl in the backstreets of 18th-century London to her stepmother Queenie's Fairy House - a place where decadent excess is a must.
Trained by Queenie to become a courtesan and by Mr. Crease - a magician who sees that Tully holds similar special powers to his own - Tully soon becomes the talk of the town.
But as Tully goes on a journey of sexual awakening, she falls in love with one of her clients, and the pleasure soon turns to pain. Especially when the estranged husband she was forced to marry by her father suddenly seeks her out. Now Tully is awaiting her trial for murder, for which she expects to hang, and her only chance of survival is to get her story to the one person who might be able to help her.
Delaney's incredible tale of a young woman's journey out of the depths of despair is shocking, haunting and evocative. Part historical fiction and part magical realism, this juicy, jaw-dropping story will linger long after the last minute has passed.

Quick, Saucy, Fun Read
This is a simple tale, but one with a sufficiently interesting (albeit somewhat implausible) heroine to hold my interest. An Almond for Parrot mixes a couple of familiar tropes - notably Cinderella and the 'Prostitute with a Heart of Gold' - into an erotic story of magical realism, set in eighteenth-century London. The prose is lush and vivid, and evokes the settings well, The characters, on the other hand, are painted with the most shallow and superficial of strokes. The plot moves quickly and predictably, with a few points that strain credibility far more than the supernatural elements do.
Nonetheless, Delaney has provided a quick, fun, saucy read where a smart heroine gains control of her own body and her own destiny.
TRIGGER WARNING: The book contains one rape scene, vividly described.
A Book is good when you don't want to start another right away!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very interesting plot. Some things didn't work but on the whole this was a solid read. Plot keeps it going, characters not completely rounded it. Not sure why Tully was so stuck on Avery other than he was her first. I loved the magical fantasy aspect more than the romance. Look forward to more from this author!
Great for anyone who loved Moll Flanders or Forever Amber
Well written and a lot of fun, this is like Moll Flanders for modern readers, with a lovely little twist of the supernatural.
Was a very pleasant and entertaining read.
Highly recommended!
Engaging historical romance
I began this with a certain amount of uncertainty because I had the sense that it was a Moll Flanders knock-off. And certainly there are echoes of Moll's story in this piqaresque novel/romance of Tully Truegood, but the tale here is warmer and much more appealing to the contemporary reader than Defoe's novel. Tully is warmer, certainly than the eponymous Moll, and while she loses her innocence and becomes a worldly woman in the course of the novel, she never becomes hardened to life.
Briefly, An Almond for a Parrot is the story of Tully Truegood, a girl with a peculiar gift.
