I am so happy to be able to share this book with my students. There are so many options for Passover, Chanukah, Rosh HaShana...but until now other than Sammy Spider I had not seen another story for Simchat Torah.
Not for 4-8 year olds
Great story, but the age rating is WAY off! I got this for my 6 year old, but she is not ready to know about war/Naziâs yet. Iâll save it until she is older, probably more 10-12 age range.

Creating and Fixing Torahs Is An Important Job
David's grandfather was a sofer (a scribe). He wrote a new Torah for their synagogue because the other one was starting to fade and crack. He put that Torah away in his cabinet, hoping to find a way to repair it. David marches alongside him as he carries the Torah during Simchat Torah; it's an honor. As the years pass, people bring them some Torahs that have been damaged and when David becomes a sofer himself his granddaughter comes up with a great idea about how to fix the damaged Torahs.
David spent time with his grandfather when he was younger and little did he know that was training in process for him to become a sofer himself one day. This shows me how time is so valuable with our loved ones, especially when they are pouring something into us that helps mold our character for the future. We never know just what will sprout from our seeds of time together, such as learning the Bible, learning different part of our parent's or other family members' jobs, planting food in the garden, helping to take care of smaller brothers, sisters, or other family members, helping mom to cook a meal, etc.
The illustrations brought me into David's world, showing me how the story unfolded visually.

The rain had subsided and David smiled as he leapt over puddles as he raced to the synagogue. The doors to the synagogue were open wide for a special event, Simchat Torah. His grandfatherâs new Torah would be taken out of the ark for everyone to dance with it. David had watched as his grandfather worked to create the new Torah for he was a ââsofer,â a scribe.â The old Torah âhad started to crack and fadeâ and the Rabbi requested a new one for the synagogue. Into the bottle of ink the quill went and out again to create those beautiful Hebrew letters.
