Nevermore

The Assignation by Edgar Allan Poe is one of his stories that I've never read. I thought it would be a good idea to read a classic, but it left me feeling a bit like a troglodyte trying to decipher hieroglyphics. From what I understood, as the narrator is returning home in a gondola, a woman accidentally drops her baby into the canal, but a stranger is able to rescue the child. The woman arranges a rendezvous with the hero, but this proves to be fatal for all involved.

The ending might be confusing for those trying to figure out what happened to the narrator...I suggest paying close attention to the very beginning of the story, before the narrator mentions Venice. Even with this hint, I think readers will wonder why in the hell Poe bothered writing this story. If I remember correctly, he is referring to an affair of Byron's, but using allegory instead of being direct.

This story is also known as The Visionary. Some people think this is Poe's best work...I am not one of those people.

The " Quintessential " O Henry story!

I am self educated (never went to college and don't even know if I spelled "quintessential" right !)and frankly -I'm not sure anyone on this earth is qualified to "review" an O Henry story. But I'll share this: O Henry (a Nom de Plume,fancy French for "Pen Name") wrote stories about the human condition as it affected everyday man (or woman), often his characters were people from the "lower eschelons" of life, ordinary people like you or I(no Angelinas or Clooneys in his stories ). He writes about the irony of life and his stories always have a "twist" in them. As far as this story goes it is a perfect example of the saying "Man makes a Plan ,and God laughs". Sad funny and poignant at the same time, you won't be sorry you read this time honored classic. How's that for a 58 yr old chick who took her GED drunk on Wild Turkey( my best friend in High School ,an Air Force Colonel's daughter got me drunk on the way to the test!Ha-Ha) when I was 17 . Ironically I recieved one of the highest scores in the state -I think O Henry would have laughed!The Cop and the Anthem

Typical O. Henry

Pleasant, short, and stays with you. Funny how his stories always seem to do that. Soapy is a relatable character, and his attempts at obtaining shelter are believable, and quite amusing.

A Clever Pleasant Short Story - Vintage O Henry

If you wish to obtain a quick idea of the typical O Henry short story, this is your chance. O Henry composes short stories that are clever, not usually painful, and with an unusual turn of phrase that becomes recognizable. As often as not there is an ironic ending to the story. Normally his stories can be read easily in one sitting. I cannot say this is my favorite O Henry story, but it is a great example of his work.

O Henry might also aid and abet your vocabulary. In this case, for me, in this story, eleemosynary and welkin.

While this is a good text of the original story By Poe, it is important to know that it is NOT "Annotated."

While there is a separate book about Poe included with this, making well worth the price, the actual story is not annotated

with additional information, references, and historical information usually found within an annotated work.

Almost seems you are there....

The very first sentence sucks you into the story. It is a short story of revenge. I honestly didn't find anything to dislike. A story of fiction but it does describe, in my opinion, the darkness of humanity. Most human beings would not dare act this story out. But I'm sure lots of us have imagine scenarios at one point in our lives where we would like to play it out in reality.

This is an abridged recording, not unabridged as the description states.

Very disappointed with this audio version. The sample recording sounded great, which is why I purchased it. The description says "unabridged" and it is not. There are parts missing making it hard for a student to follow along with the text. Hoping I can get a refund.

Great job

This is one of my favorite stories. The translation was great. I love the way the translations have hyperlinks. I think all dual language kindle books should be set up this way.

A beautiful classic

Full of warmth and philosophical insights, Wilder's novel is deeply moving, and poignant. The performance is consistent, but I personally find the female characterisations irritating. This is only a short coming of a male voice depicting women, but a distraction just the same. The final chapters will have anyone who's lost a father, and or loves their siblings in tatters.
