Not all Dickens writings are what you think they are cracked up to be.
Aughhhh, another Charles Diskens book I couldn't wait to put down. It tried my patience to the ends. Long, stretched out, over dialogued...I simply forced myself to finish this book. I love Dickens when he's on, but my bucket list to read all of his books may turn out to be part torture.
    Tedious
Difficult to follow and some pages appear to be missing. Would not look to read anything similar. Waste of time
quite a surprising twist in the mainstream of this master ...
quite a surprising twist in the mainstream of this master I recognise the fact that I will have to reread it at least once more before I can find a more definitive shape to both his thoughts and if possiblem my own.
    fun story
This was really a couple of stories within a story. Enjoyed it very much! Would recommend to anyone. Loved it.
    Two Stars
    Didn't hold my attention.

  • Bridge Ices Before Road Audiobook by S. Rose

    Title: Bridge Ices Before Road
    Author: S. Rose
    Narrator: Jeanne Whitehouse
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-08-13
    Publisher: Sienna Rose
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
The year is 1970. In a blue-collar suburb of Boston, two eleven year-old Catholic girls struggle to come of age in a culture still very much dominated by men.
They watch in dismay as their fathers and priests determine the lives of the women around them. Loyalty to family and church is paramount; women and children suffer in silence rather than expose the men who do them harm.
Frances Orillio is an adopted, only child; she is self-critical, anxious, and vulnerable. Maddy Malone is one of six children, and grew up in a rough housing project scrapping with the boys. Although they are strikingly different in temperament, they forge an enduring friendship on the path to becoming strong, independent women.
Together, they battle the tangled jungle of ignorance, racism, and homophobia that goes hand in hand with the culturally entrenched discrimination against women. Like the treacherous roads in a New England winter, the way is fraught with hidden dangers.
Family secrets and lies are like the invisible black ice on a bridge: if you don't watch out for the signs, it can be deadly.

    Couldn't get past narration!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator. her dialogue was very good, but her narrative passages were read in this really annoying way, with weird pauses, and she sounded SOOOOO bored. As a period piece, this was a good book, but will read it in print rather than audio.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Jeanne Whitehouse?
No! While her dialogue was good, there was something stilted and off about her narrative first-person portions.
    Any additional comments?
I wanted to like this book... but the narration was a poor choice.
    All heart & a few nail-biting moments
What did you love best about Bridge Ices Before Road?
This story is all heart with a few nail-biting moments. There are so many things packed into this story of a Catholic family in Boston, set in the 1970s. Frances Orillio and Maddy Malone meet when they are about eleven and this work takes you through their lives to high school days. Some of the themes explored are the relationships between mothers and daughters, bullying, family secrets, bigotry and roles of men and women in that era. There were rich descriptions and the characters were fully developed. I worried for many of them as danger and heartache came into their lives. I laughed in certain circumstances and teared up in others.
What other book might you compare Bridge Ices Before Road to and why?
If you liked movies such as The Man in the Moon, or Steel Magnolias I believe you would enjoy this book also. They are not exact matches, but the mix of coming of age, endearment and also tragedy and drama is a pretty good approximation.
Have you listened to any of Jeanne Whitehouses other performances before? How does this one compare?
I hadn't listed to Jeanne Whitehouse before, but she did a wonderful job. She utilized accents for the voices in just the right way, from the mothers Boston accent, to Maddys tomboyish way, from young to old- Annie, the small child, to the grandmother, and men such as the brothers and Fathers. Her reading also conveyed the heart of the characters. This was a wonderful listen.
If you could rename Bridge Ices Before Road, what would you call it?
I think the title was appropriate and wouldn't rename it.
    Any additional comments?
I was provided the audio version of this work in order to write an honest review.

In response to the one star review
Really? A one star review because you were ignorant? I actually think that most of Christopher Moore's fans, not to mention Mr. Moore himself, would find this exceedingly funny. Just because you weren't intelligent enough to figure out what everyone else seems to have had no problem figuring out, that this book was in a foreign language, seems an inadequate reason for such a poor review. So, to offset your incorrect & ignorant review, I am hereby giving this book two thumbs up, 5 stars, 6 diamonds, & a partridge in a pear tree. I would recommend that any of our German speaking friends, and any relatives of our special friend, definitely purchase this book, you will NOT be disappointed, (well maybe the relatives might be).
Update 9/7/14: Just scanning through my various reviews, and happened to click on the book to refresh my memory about the other review I was referencing. To my surprise (not really), it seems the other reviewer deleted his comments after I took him to task for his, let's just say "underwhelming," review of the book. I am leaving my review posted in the hope that no one else will trash Mr. Moore's work, based simply on the fact that they aren't intelligent enough to figure out the language in which it is printed.

    Publisher's Summary:
A brilliant and moving coming-of-age story in the tradition of Wonder by R. J. Palacio and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon - this debut novel is written with tremendous humor and charm.
This is Alexs story. But he doesnt know exactly what its about yet, so you probably shouldnt either.
Instead, here are some things that its sort of about (but not really):
Its sort of (but not really) about brain surgery.
Its sort of (but not really) about a hamster named Jaws 2 (after the original Jaws (who died), not the movie Jaws 2).
Its sort of (but actually quite a lot) about Alexs parents.
Its sort of (but not really) about feeling ostrichized (which is a better word for excluded [because ostriches cant fly so they often feel left out]).
Its sort of (but not really [but actually, the more you think about it, kind of a lot]) about empathy (which is like sympathy only better), and also love and trust and fate and time and quantum mechanics and friendship and exams and growing up.
And its also sort of about courage. Because sometimes it actually takes quite a lot of it to bury your head in the sand.
    Critic Reviews:
"Irresistible! Ostrich is loaded with wit, charm, and wisdom. Alex is one of the sweetest and most inspiring narrators Ive ever encountered. I dare you not to laugh, cry, and fall utterly in love." (Maria Semple, New York Times best-selling author of Whered You Go, Bernadette?)
"One of the bravest novels Ive read in a very long time. Matt Greene lets the reader become detective, and clue by clue we uncover not only the truth of Alexs world, but the deepest truths of what it means to love and lose." (Carol Rifka Brunt, author of Tell the Wolves Im Home)
"Ostrich has given me the most enjoyable reading experience Ive had all year and has one of the funniest and most engaging young narrators Ive had the pleasure of reading. Matt Greene is seriously funny and in Ostrich proves comedy can be the finest of arts." (Matt Haig, author of The Humans)

Wonderful way of looking at the world
Our hero is our eyes and ears to his wonderfully interesting world , Growing up with all those unanswered questions has never been more enjoyable
    Sad coming of age story
A coming of age story that is witty, profound, and sad, it reminds me of a Curious Case of a Dog in the Midnight but with cancer instead of autism. Yet it is original in tone and character and observations on human nature.
I would have hoped for a happy ending
What a beautifully written story. I guess, because it had so many funny moments, I never saw the sad ending coming. A treasure, really!!!
    A great clever funny book
A complex entertaining and very funny read. It was thought provoking, bringing back memories in a new refreshing and funny way. A good read.
    A Life in the Dayâ
Alex is the only one in his primary school who is allowed to wear non-religious headgear. That's because he's been bald since he had his brain surgery. But that doesn't matter much to Alex, even though it could make him feel - as he calls it - "ostrichsized (which is a better word for excluded (because ostriches can't fly so they often feel left out.))" No, Alex is concentrating on getting a scholarship to a good middle school. He's also trying to figure out what's behind all the strange things that have been happening since he had his tumor removed.

'Lot 50: The rarest and most beautiful stamp in the world. The Venus de Milo of Philately.
That was how the auctioneer announced it, and from that moment the feud began in earnest, for as children they had agreed to share Olivers schoolboy stamp collection, and Jane now wanted her rightful share. So the Antigua, Penny, Puce became the focal point of their rivalry, with each one resorting to every refinement of malice, mockery and sabotage until the law stepped in, and with a strange quirk of fate decided the Battle of the Stamp - and the running Battle of the Sexes.

During his long life he produced more than 140 works. Graves' translations and innovative analysis and interpretations of the Greek myths, the memoir of his early life, Good-Bye to All That, and his speculative study of poetic inspiration, The White Goddess, have never been out of print.
Graves earned his living by writing popular historical novels, including I, Claudius (for which he was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize), King Jesus, The Golden Fleece and Count Belisarius. He was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1961 and made an honorary fellow of St Johns College, Oxford, in 1971.

    Title: Married to a Spy
    Author: Alec Waugh
    Narrator: James Langton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-02-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Alec Waugh set this novel in Tangier where he had been an intermittent resident for 20 years. Married to a Spy is not, however, another Tangier novel. It is a dramatic story of fast-moving action and suspense based on the assumption that the Basque liberationists decide to launch a series of guerrilla attacks against southern Spain, using Morocco as their base.
The British secret service sends to Tangier, to keep an eye on things, an Englishman in his middle 30s who is married to an American 10 years younger than himself. He is bringing into danger not only himself but her, and one of his main problems is that, without jeopardising security, he cannot take her fully into his confidence. Thereby he is endangering his marriage. The situation provides the framework for a story at once romantic and exciting.
Alec Waugh, during World War II, was employed in Baghdad in military counterespionage. This experience gives to Married to a Spy the ring of authenticity.

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-01-13

    Publisher's Summary:
When her post office burns down, postmistress Véronique starts lobbying for its replacement. But her fellow residents of the small commune of Fogas in the French Pyrenees are too preoccupied to rally to her cause. Mayor Serge Papon, overwhelmed by grief at the death of his wife, has lost his joie de vivre and all taste for village politics (and croissants) and it seems as though deputy mayor Christian (whose tendresse for Véronique makes him her usual champion) will soon be saying au revoir to the mountain community. And to Sarko the bull. Add to this a controversial government initiative to reintroduce bears to the area and soon the inhabitants are at loggerheads, threatening the progress of the sacred Tour de France and the very existence of Fogas itself. In yet another tale with more ups and downs than a Pyrenean horizon, things are about to get grizzly.
    Members Reviews:
    Delightful
It took me a little while to get into this book, and to get to know the characters, but once I did, I found it difficult to put down. Lovely descriptions of the people and the places and very well narrated by Jonathan Keeble.
I hope Audible will get the whole Fogas series recorded by the same narrator.
