Recomended by the school- and great!

Looking at a local school to send our boys to, we noticed this book in the class room- hardly a title you wouldn't notice! We brought the book and our 7 year old loved it! It got him reading. The books in this series are great, we love them, the kids love them, the teachers love them.

I will get them on Audible now and listen to them on family car trips, so we can all get caught up in the adventures.

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful classic story and it gets 5 stars. This particular printing, however, is completely unacceptable. It's as if someone typed it into a document, and printed it off--no page numbers, not titled at the top of each page, the lines don't even break properly (see photo). Purchased as a gift, thankfully with enough time to purchase a better quality copy--probably for less money! A disgrace to the publishing community.

I LOVED Anne of Green Gables as a child and own the complete hard copy of the Anne series. Initially, I was delighted to find this collection of books written by one of my all time favorite authors for only $0.99 (kindle price. What a steal!) and felt I had to get the digital copy for my kindle at once. As soon as the product was delivered to my device, I began to read it since it's been years since I've visited the darling world that L.M Montgomery created.

I was very surprised to find that I kept tripping on certain sentences; the writing didn't seem as smooth as I remembered. When I got to chapter 6, I decided to compare a sentence in the digital print to my old, yellowing physical copy of Anne of Green Gables book. I realized why I had some difficulty reading my new digital copy: THERE ARE TYPOS IN THIS PRODUCT.

It contains the WORST kinds of typos. There are typos in which it results in sentences that don't make sense. There are typos with the wrong pronouns in them that make it confusing for the reader to understand which character the publisher meant to write about. I am able to follow the story because I've read Anne of Green Gables more than once with my hard copy but for new readers, these typos will make this beautiful story difficult to read and at times, understand.

I hope the digital copy can be fixed so that owners can enjoy L.M. Montgomery's work as it was meant to be enjoyed. I have given this two stars instead of one because of the fabulous price for kindle readers.

Bizarre Illustrations

The illustrations are actually random pictures that are creepy since they are in the beginning when Anne meets Mathew Cuthbert so they insinuate a romance between them.

Classic Sinclair

I've read this over 20 years ago and I'm rereading it again, just to remind me what life is like if you don't speak up for your rights! Great Book from an era that we maybe repeating, hopefully not. In short, this a fictional (may have possibly happened) story is about an eastern European immigrant couple in search of the "American Dream", but due to extreme unsafe working/living conditions and class inequality, they ultimately succumb to the crushing wheels of progress of the Industrial Revolution.

Makes you happy to live in this century

This is the story of Jurgis, a Lithuaian immigrant who works in the stockyards of Chicago around the turn of the century. How much have we taken for granted in our day to day lives? Sinclair does a great job of conveying the terrible hardship faced by the unskilled labor force, and what gross injustices were plied against them in their ignorance.

I couldn't escape the constant thought of "This could've been me." My ancestors were immigrants and undoubtedly worked in similar conditions.how possibly could people have survived with any hope, with any belief in the goodness of mankind? A telling, frightening story which everyone should be required to read. Beautifully written, compelling story line.

Have times changed much?

I'd like to think that packing houses are cleaner and safer now. However, the greed at the top is just as bad and this is what struck me most from the book. We seem to be in an environment of an increasing gap of wealth between the average worker and those at the top. Left unchecked, we might see a worker revolution here in the USA.

The Jungle as Life

This is an important reflection on U.S. society that shows that as much as things have changed in the last century, they really haven't.

Five Stars

One of the best books of the year

and I loved each and every bit of it

5+ stars! SQUUEEEEE!!! Um, oops, sorry, but this book is just too adorbs, and I loved each and every bit of it!!!

Before I start with all the good stuff, I want to mention that the blurb is pretty much lying. She doesn't really see the guys as her brothers, her love interest is just moving to another boy, because she finds out Zander isn't what she thought he was, and she finds that, and more, in another member.

Secondly, that part about the band breaking up? Over an argument? Mac having to save them? Try page 280, which is practically the end of the book considering the book stops at around page 320/330. :|

Such a shame. I am still happy I read the book, but yeah, my expectations were slightly different thanks to the blurb.

Now to the good stuff, because there is a lot of good.

First up Mac, or Mackenzie. She is a supersweet, cute, cool 12-year old girl who loves Perfect Storm and gets the chance of her lifetime when her mom (who works with bands/artists) becomes the tour manager of Mac's fav band. I loved how Mac was first totally fangirling, but later on started to get more comfortable with the band, and with everything that involves them. She could talk more normally to them, and they to her. It was a relief to see her change. I was a bit worried that she might be stuck in fangirl mode the whole tour. Not that such a thing would be that bad, but I was definitely looking forward to her interacting with the guys, and not just stammer and shake a can of energy drink and spray it all over her favourite guy (and yes, this happened).

I loved how creative she was, and it was great fun seeing her drawings pop up all over the place. My favourite would definitely be her comics.

Charming!

Penelope Grey has a perfectly fine life. She lives in a big mansion in the City, where all the household chores are taken care off by pleasant staff. She doesn't even have to go to school, as a tutor comes to her. Her parents - on the rare occasions that she sees them - are nice. She has a couple of nice playmates. Everything is nice. Nice... and really, really boring. She escapes into book after book (the shout-outs to familiar titles are a nice touch), finally deciding to do something that the characters do in each story. That's how she comes to drop a wish into a well: "I wish something interesting would happen when I least expect it, just like in a book."

And then, to her surprise, something interesting happens. Her father quits his job, the family runs out of money, and the unexpected inheritance of an old house in a tiny East Tennessee town seems like a lucky solution. But Penelope is about to learn that good things and bad things tend to come wrapped up together, and sometimes luck is a matter of perspective.

The first section of the book is pretty quiet, underscoring Penelope's serious ennui. When the family leaves the City for Thrush Junction and its colorful inhabitants, the pace picks up. Penelope drops her boring first name for the more cheerful nickname of Penny, and she gets to know the local kids. She starts experiencing adventures instead of just reading about them.

This book got a little bump of publicity when a reader objected to the fact that Penny's new neighbors include a pair of lesbian moms and their son, a family presented just as matter-of-factly as any of the other characters. For Penny, the fact that Willa has a wife is no more surprising than the fact that she has "hair to her knees." Like any kid, she's not all that interested in the relationships between the adults around her.

This is an illustrated chapter book, and Abigail Halpin's slightly cartoony style offers the perfect complement to Snyder's text. Throughout the book, the voice of the narrator is excellent. In the first chapter, when Penelope is living vicariously through reading, the narration sounds very much like listening to someone telling the story. As she makes friends and has real-life experiences, the voice of the narrator fades into the background. (With the right voice talent, this could be an OUTSTANDING audiobook.) Filled with gentle humor, quirky characters, and small adventures, this is a good choice for older elementary school readers, especially those who have read and enjoyed some of Penny's favorite books.

How Sad
