bad narrator

This is a classic tale of missing people, government corruption and a beautiful damsel in distress (of a sort). Unfortunately, I have to agree with the first review of this book. The story is a classic but the narrator is terrible. She sounds like a computer and her high pitched voice was a poor choice for a first person narrative with a male protagonist. The narrator's voice has almost no inflection, perhaps contributing to the impression that this was read by a computer. All of these issues increased the time it took me to become engrossed in the story. I'd suggest people try the other recording of this book now available on Audible but the sample of that also sounds a bit like a computer with many of the same issues. However, the other narrator is male if nothing else.

It is a wonderful story though and the fact that we could enjoy it in spite of the narration is probably an excellent indicator of just how great a tale it is.

Quite remarkable!

Having listened to myriad narrations of, and watched probably all movies of, the tales of Sherlock Holmes, as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I was quite impressed by Vanneman's tale, Vance's narration, and how closely they adhered to the 'classic' Sherlock Holmes (with just one somewhat shocking exception.) The tale's plot, characters, and setting could easily be mistaken as the fruit of Doyle's own pen, which he plausibly would have written a decade before his death in 1930. Vanneman's thorough and insightful descriptions of places and people in the tale are 'first rate'! The plot has copious twists and turns Doyle would have approved of (and NEVER assume you've heard the last twist!) A warning though; Vanneman went FAR beyond Doyle with some explicit details of how Watson was the lady's man, so if you listen to this tale with an elder parent or young child, save yourself some embarassement by being ready to sensor a bit of this story. All told, this listen will take many a Holmes-fan to that place Doyle was so adept at sending us.

Watson has sex

I am not opposed to sex scenes in novels but this is supposed to be a Sherlock Holmes story, not Watson's lusty life. The authors detailed descriptions of the marginal and irrelevant does nothing to inspire listening even though the plot has some interest, it isnt enough to keep me. Though Mr Vance gives an excellent performance, this book is being returned.

Yes; the story was excellently crafted, peopled, developed and brought to a conclusion.

Who was your favorite character and why?

For Holmes, there was no diminution in this story of his talents and incisiveness; his side kick and companion Watson was treated with respect and appreciation, rather than with condescension or exasperation, which triggers in me disgust and rejection; and, to one's delight and full enjoyment, a third hardy character is born: Dr. Watson decides to befriend and befather (through adoption) one of the Baker Street Irregulars, saucy and smart 9 year

old Jenny. The story weaves through 8 years of adventure wherein one gets to observe

his daughter growing up into a judiciously saucy and even smarter young lady.

Hearing a good dramatic recording of a play is always more enjoyable than reading the script. And while that's not always the case with fiction, it holds true for Naxos's series of Sherlock Holmes stories. The four collected here aren't the best Holmes stories, but they're tightly written, and their charm and suspense are magnified by David Timson's riveting narration. Timson, the reader for all the volumes in the series, is brilliantly convincing in his voices for Holmes, Watson, and all the butlers, squires, villains, and bit players.

I completely enjoy listening to all the Adventures..., Reminiscences..., Further Adventures... in the Sherlock Holmes series. I think that David Timson does an admirable job in these recordings, and I look forward to future productions.

At times sly, at times somber, he shifts from one character to another with ease, changing accents and timbre as appropriate. Holmes stories have been interpreted many times in recent years - even George Takei, Captain Sulu from Star Trek, had a go at it. Timson is among the better narrators, giving one the feeling of having heard something authentic from gas-lit London.

For Lovers Of Holmes

Though not necessarily the best Sherlock Holmes stories, David Timson does a wonderful job bringing flavor and color to stories of our favorite Victorian "consulting detective." Picturing the flat at 221B Baker Street and 19th century London is easy through Watson's naratives and Timson's excellent voice characterizations. David Timson does the best readings among all the Sherlock Holmes audio books I own. I highly recommend any Holmes story read by David Timson.

When Young Sherlock and John H. First Meet

Having eagerly read the canon several times, it is really a delight to relax, get cosy with

my cat and a cup of tea and listen to this excellent dramatized version. The actors, both major and minor are excellent, the sound effects take you on location, you experience firsthand the development of friendship and relationships which will march forth in ensuing stories, and all do justice to such a well thought out, complex story.

It opens with two highly unusual deaths in an out of the way place near London, heavy laden with clues if you know what to look for, which Holmes does, but the two police inspectors, Gregson and Lestrade, do not, quite out of their depth. How Doyle ekes out the following up of the clues, finally weaving in the backstory set in of all places, Utah, the then wild frontier, fraught with miracle,patience, love,greedy jealousy and hate, then revenge, is spellbindingly delicious.

These are very well done dramatizations; I shall continue with them.

This is one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes stories and this dramatisation is excellent..I recommend it!

Attention to details like this, is something the great Holmes himself would no doubt appreciate.

It's amazing how little detective stories have changed in all the years since Sherlock Holmes appeared. I really like the stories, and the voices are great. There's about 200 miles of great entertainment on this 3-disk set.

Excellent Listen

Recently I've become of a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories. This one was one of the better audio programs I've heard so far.

Honest and reviting. Romantic and sad.

Great to meet Mary. You feel the internal struggle of Sherlock Holmes. A great story.

Great - Another Great Performance & Story

This is another great Sherlock Holmes with the fab Clive at the helm as the great detective. He & Michael are very good together & bring out something in this story that others could not for me. Clive is my fave Radio Holmes & I have them all. Love it !

Disappointing

I have bought quite a few in this series and this has been the first disappointment. The actors were as good as usual..but perhaps this is just not one of Conan Doyle's best stories.

Mixed bag

The stories range from outstanding to jut OK. The narration ranges from very good to very bad. This collection is worth the credit. If you're on one you don't like, hang in there. There are some not to be missed.

some of the narrator's lacked imagination. well written and some where very engaging. some of the stories were long and boring.

Great stories, terrible readings

Some of the greatest detective stories mangled by poor reading. Almost without fail the readers demonstrate a lack of understanding of where emphasis should be placed, to the point of implying that they do not understand the story. Accents are equally appalling. My fault for buying without listening to the sample, had I realised how bad the readers were I would not have purchased. Be warned.

Hit and Miss

The stories themselves are a lovely range of stories by authors often over looked in the belief that only Conan Doyle and Wilkie Collins wrote detective stories at this time. Unfortunately these classic stories are sometimes let down by the choice of readers. Two had me disparing before the first sentence was finished, but the rest were read well enough for me to hear stories that I hadn't come across before.
