Art Expert Seeks Priceless Titian, Engages in Thuggy Budapest Intrigue

The fictional heroine (Helena) of the THE APPRAISAL is an art expert, a master of disguises, a burglar, and a dangerous martial-arts-trained killer. But what else would you expect from the daughter of a skillful painter of fake âOld Mastersâ and easy-to-fake Corots?

In the novel, Helena is hired to buy a priceless Titian painting (a fictional depiction of Christâs Entry Into Jerusalem) that was bartered for food during WWII by a starving refugee, now her wealthy American employer. Once Helena arrives in Budapest, she finds she is being watched by local police, and that there are competing bidders (including some Ukrainians) who will stop at nothing to obtain the painting.

Even if Helena succeeds in buying the painting, she must figure out how to ship it to America, because Hungary--like so many European nations--wonât allow âOld Mastersâ paintings to be removed from the country. Will Helena, who is the foremost expert in Titianâs oeuvre, be able to use her impeccable credentials to engineer the paintingâs exit?

The novel is suspenseful, but fine art plays a very minor role in it. The plot is mostly about thuggy intrigue in Budapest. As a character, Helena isn't very believable--she's a highly credentialled art expert, yet she takes on the very dangerous task of extricating an Old Master for a fee from a dodgy private purchaser. I prefer the much lighter art-forgerâs-daughter series by Charlotte Elkins (starting withDangerous Talent).

Lots of atmosphere, but characterization is thin and the plot is murky

My favorite subset of the mystery genre is Eurocrime, especially if it comes with big dollops of ancient capitals steeped in aged beauty, history and intrigue. On that score, The Appraisal fits the bill. Few cities have as much fascinatingâand troublingâhistory as Budapest, or such a moody atmosphere.

Though this story is set in the present day, the past is always present, especially the damage wreaked on the cityâs residents by World War II and the USSR. The plot is set in motion when art expert and female James Bond Helena Marsh comes into town with her several passports and disguises, seeking to recover a Titian painting. Helena represents the former Budapest resident Géza Márton, who spent some years in a Siberian work camp before emigrating to Canada.

Convoluted

Confusing story. Brought in characters that seemed important, but dropped their storylines. The reader made several errors that werent edited out of the audible version. So many great books out there...this isnt one of them.

This was a non-story

So disappoining. I still do not understand the purpose of any of it. Although I had worked out bits of the supposed puzzle, I still struggled to connect with the characters. I re-listened to several chapters thinking I must have missed something, but no, it really was as though chapters were missing. The entire script was so improvised and unoriginal. I'm hoping this was a special daily deal otherwise I will be returning it. The narration of most of the book was awful, accents slipping all over the place even when unintended. I really don't know why Scotland was brought into the story at all. Much as I love Scotland, what was the purpose? The only pleasant thing I can say is that the end was quite moving but I would have preferred it 15 chapters earlier. A much repeated tale, with a few extras thrown in, unfortunately not to add excitement or suspense, more likely just words to fill up a book. How do these ever get published?

Had to quit

Could not get much past Chapter 12. If you like crudity and lots of smarmy bits about homosexuals and other sex driven relationships in 1940 England, this is the book for you. Tone is too cute by half.

Wow!

FIVE STARS!! One of the best book Iâve read... EVER!! Sorry itâs done and I read it so quick. Wish there was a chance for a sequel to continue this series. This author is fantastic and came to find this book by another series of his Iâm currently reading, (The Silencer).

Believable storyline and interesting characters. An action packed page turner from beginning to end!

NOT EVEN CLOSE

If you're a fan of Rachael Abbott, Barry Eisler, or several dozen other good authors, do NOT read this book. A skimpy plot, cardboard dummy characters and predictable outcome. Remove the excessive wordiness and a short novel would be a magazine short story.

Hold your breath! or don't....

From beginning to end I was almost holding my breath the whole time. Couldn't and didn't want to put it down. Exciting and action-packed. You never know....

A.J. Tata portrays strong, selfless American men and women!

I have read every one of Mr. Tata's novels to date and look forward to his next book. Mortal Threat is one of his best because he developed a young female character so well. Not only has this previously rather shallow young woman matured into a caring science major who interns summers in Africa, but she mentors young Africans who work to find cures for diseases like Ebola. All of the philanthropy occurs amid vicious terrorist attacks!

Mortal Book is impossible to put down--

It's hard to write a review on a good book without giving away its story. This intense novel held me from the moment that a hired thief walked the streets of Nineveh and stole the legendary Book of Catalyst, contained therein was the creation of man, from the museum's library. Why steal the old manuscript is anyone's guess. But, the irony of the theft was impossible to miss: in the Holy Bible, particularly in the book of Jonah, it was depicted in the old times that Nineveh was a wicked city worthy of destruction. God ultimately saved it from destruction. Nothing like being saved by the Creator of man.

Then the story makes a swift change, that made you want to moan, "Man, now what?"The swift change occurred n the Prologue itself, as the thief decided not to deliver the original manuscript to the person who hired him, but to someone else entirely.

The reader of Mortal Threat is presented with a hasty message on a scan document: "In the beginning there was a Catalyst, which produced life. This Catalyst was god who created the earth and the stars and water and fire and life. There's is a beginning, a middle, and an end...The black footprints are timeless."

As the theft of the manuscript was completed, a United States president took his new oath of office. With that oath, the president of a free world gave a few words, " And I say to all of you that today we march on toward a better destiny. Our footprints are timeless.

At Face Value

Did you ever meet someone and take what they say as truth? I have and find out it wasn't true. This story line has so many directions it takes and it all comes together in the end. God is good.

short on romance, too much religion for my taste

story was okay, sort of anti-climactic at the end. Lots of praying and talk about God, so it wasn't really what I was looking for in a romantic suspense novel. The fact that it's religious should be noted on the description.

Fairly good story

While it was a good story (although a little convoluted at times), the narration was so hard to get past. The female voice was ok, but most of the male voices (especially the one used for Batterson) was soooo annoying it actually took away from the story. If theres a book 3, I hope theres a different narrator. Try Terese Plummer.

Quirky w/ Excellent Narrator, Likeable Protagonist

I usually listen to dark mysteries, but I would put this in the category of a cozy mystery. The narrator, Imogen Church, is one of my favorites. The voices of each character are very distinct, making for quite a listen. The mystery is complex enough to hold your attention and the touch of tarot card "magic" never goes too far to be considered supernatural because it really drives theories about. what's going on more than anything else.

Great story, somewhat annoying narration

I do love a good story that involves tarot. I found that Ms. Church's narration pulled me from the story, especially every time the "ha ha ha" laugh of one of characters. It felt like the narration was dialled to 11.

The story is a social dilemma / psychological mystery, somewhat like the Alexander McCall Smith books, but the writing is in a different style.

Needed a real pilot to advise author

Terrible on aviation knowledge. Just could not continue listening. Do not recommend, at least for fellow pilots.

Never bothered to write a review before

This book is so below James a Patterson that I have changed my opinion of him. I did not believe he was churning out books through other writers and just adding his name for more money until now.

I am a pilot and long time fan and even I can not think of one good thing to say about this book except it was mercifully short.

Flat, one dimensional, no character development, totally predicable. All further downgraded by a poor vocal performance. Totally uninspiring voice. It was as if an 8 th grade student wrote and read the book.

If there were no stars available instead of one star, I would have given it that.

the narrator is not very good and the aviation information is inaccurate . I will attempt to return this book.

I was so pleased to find that there are more Frost books and I enjoyed this book immensely. The plot is good, it is well read and well paced.
