I love having this book to listen to while I drive and work.

There is so much to learn each time I listen. I highly recommend this book!

One of the Best!

Fantastic book! Most books you can read once and burn. This one gives the reader something to think about and new insights each time you review it. There is a reason this book has lasted over 400 years and there are many reasons why the author won over 60 life-death battles. Highly recommended in both audio and book format.

Things that make you go Hmmmm

The book is fine, the narrative is fine, the Japanese philosophy lost me. I listen to it once in between each of my other books hoping I might grasp something.

Not strategic at all

This book has got nothing to do with "Strategy" as we perceive it in today's western world. You need to be a swords man to understand how Musashi refers to strategy: a posture and both action and reaction in a hand-to-hand combat using swords.

The book's description is highly misleading, probably due to literal translation.

Even the author wrote down that the majority of his techniques cannot be explained in detailed writing and basically have to be mastered by practice with the sword.

There are a few minor nuggets that elude to some Zen spirit, but they certainly don't warrant your time and money.

This book is unfortunately of no use to our current time (in any context for that matter), unless you plan on negotiating your next business deal using 'long swords' and 'winning' the deal, i.e. cut, slice, hack, or kill your opponent.

Five Rings

This book is based on fighting; actual hand to hand combat. I see no way to incorporate it in the business world.

Be remarkable? This isn't.

I know Seth is hugely popular, but I was disappointed with this book even though I loved All Marketers Are Liars (good book, poor title). It felt like a series of single sentence, pop, 'edicts of wisdom' that were suppose to transform my world upon hearing them (it's a tough act to sound like God AND be as creditable). His intro floats lots of names, but he used surprisingly few quoted statements. I feel Alan G. Robinson's Corporate Creativity was much better at explaining how to discover purple cows (which Seth now says is not enough to be 'remarkable'???).

Disappointing

Although I find Seth Godin's writings useful and always provocative, this concept may sound appealing but the audio version is a fairly bland collection of forgettable sound-bite sized statements. Nothing stood out or was memorable in any way. Godin's more recent works are definitely more worthwhile.

Interesting Read

The big moo is a collection of 33 short essays on creativity and remarkableness. Some are very short, others a few pages but each has some interesting thoughts. There are no recipes or step by step approaches outlined in the book, just interesting approaches and ideas about self-realization and moving forward.

A good book both from a personal development and a business growth standpoint.

Disappointing

My fault -- I didn't read the reviews before purchasing and didn't realize that it was abridged. A shame, too, since I really like the book and thought listening to it in the car would help me remember key concepts. Hey audible -- any change of getting an unabridged version?

Brutally abridged

There are 19 chapters in the book. After chapter 3, I had listened to 50% of the recording. If you need the material, get the book.

Unorganized Blabber

I have been and read a much about effective consulting and generally pleased. But, listening to this was a waste of time. Its the poorly organized ranting with no valuable take-aways.

what the book did was to give me another view of consulting from a reputable source. while i thought the book was well organized, it did not have anything special to take home after reading it. perhaps my expectation was too high....

Could David possibly be an elephant? This book is not about climbing any ladders, it's about being effective and happy where you are on the ladder. I found the approach and the content helpful and would recommend it to anyone looking to make sense of the Dibertesque corporate cultures that control most of our waking hours.

An interesting take on an old topic

Not a ton of new ideas here, but a refreshing way to deliver age old wisdom on how you should be handling the relationship with your boss. I laughed out loud a couple times on the delivery.

excellent and fun

This is a great book for a review and fun to listen too. It tells you some words of wisdom in a humorous and stylistic manner that makes you picture some of the mistakes you've made in the past and how to share them with the people you lead. I would recommend this to others who enjoy laughing and visualizing situations. Also to people who are coaching future leaders. Can it help you with your own situations in working with yoiur own leader...yes it can.

A bit out of date

Entertaining but not very useful. There are a couple tidbits but find a summary and skip the whole book.

What made the experience of listening to Throwing the Elephant the most enjoyable?

The accent of the narrator makes this book so much more clever because it conjures images of watching a Nature channel with wise hints of Obi Wan. Brilliant.

What other book might you compare Throwing the Elephant to and why?

Having read/listened to stacks of business books, I was anticipating a business book to give me tips on getting ahead or whatever, and instead I'm getting zen lessons in throwing an elephant. Nothing like it. This book is remarkably clever. Things that used to annoy me about the elephant now just make me smile.

You need the book for this to really come together. I drive and listen to the books and this did not work for me at all. If you have the time to listen to this at home with no other distractions it would be ok. If you drive and listen don't waste your time or money

Adversarial, two-dimensional approach to business

This is mostly a book about chess with brief references to business. The concept sounded interesting and it had such great reviews, I gave it a try - and am disappointed.

Seems the author really wanted to write a book about chess history and strategy, and stuck in random thoughts about business. It would be helpful for those whose main desire is to improve their chess game, or perhaps interesting to those who are already fairly accomplished chess players.

Each chapter presents a principle of chess - "Play with a plan," "Learn from your mistakes" - followed by lengthy examples from chess, then a tiny bit basically saying that this also applies to business. For example, in the chapter entitled, "Don't Sacrifice Without Good Reason," he gives the brief business example of flooding the market with free product in order to try to gain customers who will pay for it in the future. Then he says that in chess and business it's really better to sacrifice your opponent's pieces than your own. If there is a way to do that in the business world, he has left me in the dark about what he means.

A more fundamental drawback is that he seems to take a wholly adversarial win/lose approach to business. In chess, there's always an opponent, a winner and a loser. The approach of Stephen Covey and others - to seek win/win solutions - makes more sense to me.

Another flaw in his approach is that chess has only two people/entities involved, whereas in business you have at least three - yourself as a product/service supplier, your prospects or clients, and your competitors. At least in my profession, I find I do far better to work on my relationship and communication with potential clients, than I would do by attacking my competitors in some way. I enjoy good business relationships based on trust.

Simple yet deep

Let me say that this book took me by surprise with its intriguing stories drawn from the annals of chess history. The book is a hybrid chess instruction/business strategy, which draws life lessons from lessons learned on the chess board. The author enjoys interjecting zen-like axioms similar to ?your weakness is your strength.? Overall, the book is extremely satisfying when wanting to know basic principles which the best players abide by.

Admittedly More Philosophical Than Practical

The philosophical rather than practical nature of the work make it a worthwhile 'read'.

Entertaining

I was looking for an educational book on real estate and real estate investing, however, this did not hit the mark. This book was, however, an interesting rags to riches story and entertained my wife and I during a long trip.

Great, Amusing Edutainment

The story is told perfectly by the author. You can almost picture the family and her wise mother! Lot's of good snippets of information in there to be had, and highly entertaining too. This book had me really thinking about different ways to use the information it offered, but laughs kept me hooked, I'll be listening to this again quite soon. My thanks to the Author, another job well done! A chuckle a minute.

You will listen more than once

I can't express how much I enjoyed this book. The narration was wonderful. If you listen to this bok and are not inspired as well as entertained and touched emotionally, you are a brick. I loved it!

Get to the point

Found this book while doing a search for titles relating to real estate. Turned out to be a long rambling story without much substance. Reminds me a lot of the Robert Kiyosaki "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" narrative but without the helpful ideas. I think that the fact that one reviewer called it Oprah-spirited says it all. This book is a fat, waste of time.

Grating at times but useful

I found this to be painful to listen to, but if you can make it past the unfunny banter, I think you will improve and become more confident with grammar. I purchased this as part of my GMAT prep and feel like this program helped a great deal. It's pretty basic stuff that I feel like I learned in school but had since forgotten. Some of you smarties might not find it useful. Great for those of us who went to public schools! :)

Good rules, annoying presentation

First, I would strongly recommend that Audible get more of these grammar books...there are just too few to choose from. That said, this is unfortunately one of the best choices here.

The good: The rules are great. You will learn about a ton of mistakes that you make on a daily basis and will come away with some great new fixes. Very helpful for test prep, as I prepare for my GMATs.

The bad: The presenters are probably the two most annoying people ever. Some moron at the Princeton Review probably thought these people and this kind of presentation would stick. If you hate Monty Python (like I do) you will hate the presenters and the humor on this listen. It only makes it harder to listen to. Instead of using simple examples to illustrate their point, they use really annoying examples with stupid, made up words sometimes to make a point. The "news reports" in between are abominable and hard to follow. Hopefully they fired the two geeks doing the dialog as well as the schmucks who wrote the dialog and replaced them with easier to follow examples and more professional people.

I hope that Audible adds more grammar books and considers using similar products from companies like Kaplan or Verbal Advantage who tend to do things much more seriously and professionally. Until then, this is about the best we got...or have :).

Will need your full attention

The content of this book is good. I listened to this book while driving back and forth between work and home. It turned out to be a hassle listening to this, as I found myself rewinding very often. It needs all your attention. I'd recommend listening to this while NOT driving.

One thing I'd really like to see in this book is, more gap between sentences - pausing a couple of seconds between complex sentences will let me digest the concept better.

Over all I think this book turned out to be an useful one and I will be listen to it one more time to make sure that I remember everything.
