    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Two rambunctious, romantic flameouts. One boring wedding. One heated embrace in a quiet coatroom. This is not exactly the recipe for true love. John and Janes lusty encounter at a friends wedding isnt really the beginning of anything with any weight to it; even they know that. When they manage to pull back, it occurs to them that they might start this whole thing over properly. They might try getting to know one another first, through letters.
What follows is a series of traded confessionsof their messy histories, their past errors, their big loves, their flaws, and their passions. Each love affair, confessed as honestly as possible, reveals the ways in which Jane and John have grown and changed (or not changed) over the yearsthe people theyve hurt, the ones still bruised, the ones who bruised them. Where all of this soul-baring will take them is the burning question behind every lettera question that can only be answered when they meet again, finally, in the flesh.

The constant mix of sweet and sour, of heart-swelling romance and smart-ass banter isterrifically engaging. (Entertainment Weekly)

Wonderful "two sides of the coin" book
I always enjoy reading good fiction, but in all truthfulness, it's really difficult to find authors (or novels for that matter) that can speak loud and clear to both men and women about love, or at least their perception of it, without forgetting about the other sex's take on the matter. Listening to this amazing audiobook has given me hope that it' is completely possible to find such literary works. Of course, I know this was a colaboration between two amazing writers and two very talented narrators, but it's possible, and it's amazing! It was a real joy to listen (not that their confessions didn't make me sad or worried, or a bit scared for our heroes' sanity), buy it was enjoyable non the less. Being a cynic on the outside/hopeless sensitive on the inside (as I think Jane herself described John and her's type), I'm often drawn to romance novels/chick lit in the hopes of finding something deep enough to make me believe for a split second I wasn't watching a Disney Princess's story for the gazillionth time, but I often finish feeling a bit... disappointed and ashamed to admit to anyone else but my closest friends, who know I'm indeed a romantic, that I read or listened to a certain "modern fairytale-like book". Which Brings Me to You is the kind of novel that you want to go and tell your most manly buddies/boyfriends/husbands to go listen to, because I'm pretty sure they'll like it, if not for the love story (or stories) at least for the hot scenes! It's the kind of book you like to brag about reading/listenong to before it became worldwide famous. It's that good.
Can't stop praising Kirby and Reneé for the amazing voice work, and of course the two amazingly talented writers who came up with such a clever way to take us throught these two stragers lives and loves. And, *spoiler alert*...........

    Wonderful, Soul-searching Book
This book is about a woman nearing middle age who finds her world falling apart. Her marriage is in a rut, she loses her job, and faces a few fears. Before Carissa comes apart mentally and emotionally she decides to come apart by getting away. Carissa is offered a cottage in Hawaii to vacation in, so jumps at the chance. While in Maui, Carissa has to face her problems, but makes new friends. God meets Carissa there and slowly takes her a part bit by bit utntil she realizes that she must change in her attitudes, marriage and in her relationship with God.
I loved this book. Even though alot of the subject matter didn't pertain to me because I'm single, I still came away from the book with something to think on. Robin Jones Gunn books are always like this. No matter if I'm reading one of her teen books or one of her adult novels, I always come away smiling, sometimes crying for joy, but ALWAYS feeling closer to God.
One thing I would like to say is that if you are like me and read and own every book by Robin Jones Gunn than you might want to be careful about letting your children under sixteen read this book. There are a couple of adult themes in this book that may not be appropriate for children and younger teens.
Fantastic!!! Best i have read in a long time.
Many thanks to Robin for a wonderful read. Got it yesterday and finished today, could not put it down. It was especially interesting for me because my husband and I spent 3 weeks on Maui last Oct. Robin totally captures the feel of the island and I love the history bits that she worked into the story. My husband and I have visited the HI islands several times and like Robin, we really love the Aloha there. The description of how Carissa discovered more about herself and recommits her life to God left me very emotional. Even thou I know that the characters are fictional, they were very real to me through Robins writings. Her descriptions of some of the sights brought wonderful memories back of when we were there. This should be a must read for any woman having trouble in her marriage or finding herself drawing away from Ke Akua. Looking forward to reading more of Robin's books.
    Everything is redeemable
I recommend this to anyone who has been married. Marriage is hard sometimes. Often leaving seems easier than staying. It's easy to feel hopeless in your relationship. Robin does a wonderful job of illustrating how God redeems relationships. It's beautiful and heartfelt. Also this book transports the reader to Hawaii with is grace filled aloha spirit.
    Five Stars
Love it. Can't wait for the next book
    Loved this little book!
Just got back from Maui when I read this. It came alive and the message of the story is an important one

  • The Petting Zoo Audiobook by Jim Carroll

    Title: The Petting Zoo
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Jim Carroll
    Narrator: Scott Brick
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-04-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
When poet, musician, and diarist Jim Carroll died in September 2009, he was putting the finishing touches on a potent work of fiction. The Petting Zoo tells the story of Billy Wolfram, an enigmatic 38-year-old artist who has become a hot star in the late 1980s New York art scene. As the novel opens, Billy, after viewing a show of Velazquez paintings, is so humbled and awed by their spiritual power that he suffers an emotional breakdown and withdraws to his Chelsea loft. In seclusion, Billy searches for the divine spark in his own work and life.
Carroll's novel moves back and forth in time to present emblematic moments from Billy's life (his Irish Catholic upbringing, his teenage escapades, his evolution as an artist and meteoric rise to fame) and sharply etched portraits of the characters who mattered most to him, including his childhood friend Denny MacAbee, now a famous rock musician; his mentor, the unforgettable art dealer Max Bernbaum; and one extraordinary black bird. Marked by Carroll's sharp wit, hallucinatory imagery, and street-smart style, The Petting Zoo is a frank, haunting examination of one artist's personal and professional struggles.
    Critic Reviews:
"A heartfelt portrait of a New York original by a New York original." (Publishers Weekly)

    Needs an editor!
Well, it starts out interesting enough, but gradually loses steam until it becomes so sagged down I made it about nine hours through (more than halfway) before giving up. I think the narrator is very good, but the book just is wayyy too slow-paced and rambling, taking forever to make any point while we take a lazy tour through the muddy philosophies and slightly tormented mind of a New York artist. It is often repetitive, stating the same exact thing more than once. I liked Basketball Diaries and Jim Carroll was a talented person, the concept of this book has potential, but needs a good editor to pare down to about half the length.
    Deserves to be read
    Any additional comments?
First things first. Scott Brick does his usual wonderful job reading. He even sounds a little like the real Jim Carroll, which is a double edge sword. Its good hearing the words as Jim might have said them, but I find myself too often comparing Billy, the lead character, to Jim Carroll. I sort of imagine a lot of this novel is a thinly veiled autobiography and I think thats a little unfair of me because its a novel. I just cant help it particularly with the voice so like Jims.
Apparently Jim Carroll had a cardiac event at his desk while writing this beast and died. I call it a beast because the other reviewer is correct that it is quite fat and begs for a good shaving that I think it might have gotten had Jim Carroll lived long enough to complete it.
On the other hand, it has the feel of a novel that he never would have finished, and thats kind of the problem. There is a linear thread through the novel, but the digressions are so far afield and, frankly, irrelevant (at least for me) that it does get to be a bit of a bear.
But SOOOO worth it. This novel may not be an autobiography, but it stands as a great rumination about the creative process and its impact on artists life that I think any dedicated artist can relate. Those are the parts I really appreciated. And I didnt mind some of the digressions about Billys youth that actually felt more like their own novellas because they just kind of went on and on sometimes.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Author of the award-winning novel Finn, Jon Clinch has drawn favorable comparisons to William Faulkner. With Kings of the Earth, he takes listeners to an upstate New York farm where the three Procter brothers live in stasis. When one dies in his sleep, the other two are soon suspected of murder.
    Editorial Reviews:
The use of multiple voices makes listening to Kings of the Earth, the latest novel by Jon Clinch, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Narrated by Richard Poe, the book includes characterizations by Andrea Gallo, Ken Marks, George K. Wilson, Alan Nebelthau, T. Rider Smith, Rich Orlow, Ed Sala, and Henry Strozier. It tells of the death of 60-year-old Vernon Procter, eldest brother of a trio of eccentric, middle-aged men, and the subsequent accusation that Vernon had been murdered by his youngest brother, Creed. That the illiterate, foul-smelling men all lived together in squalor on the family farm in upstate New York throws a patina of gritty, undisturbed dust over the storys setting.
Clinch allows Kings of the Earth to unfold by jumping back and forth in time, with all of the characters adding different dimensions to the story by sharing their various perspectives. This writing style gives ample opportunity for vocal talent to shine. The listener comes to know crusty Vernon (Marks); Audie, the simple-minded middle brother (Wilson); and Creed, a fellow who remained trusting and innocent despite having left the farm once for a short stint in the military (Smith). Donna, the sister who escaped the farm and became a nurse, voices her anxiety and exasperation at the literal filth of her brothers existence. The condescending, obnoxious tone of Donnas son, Tom, is heard as he congratulates himself for his ability to operate his marijuana production right under his ignorant uncles noses. After vivid descriptions of the brothers lack of personal hygiene, listeners will wish that they could jump into the book and give the hapless Creed some much-needed advice as he earnestly talks about preparing to court a local waitress.
The star of the story is gruff but caring neighbor Preston Hatch (Strozier). Without pretension, Hatch is the know-it-all who has never entertained the fact that he might not know it all. His need to opine on everything from the stubbornness of mules or what keeps marriages strong to the best places for Sunday dinner give the book many humorous moments. Listeners will eagerly await Prestons next pearls of wisdom. Those tangential digressions, though, do not distract from Prestons deeply rooted sincerity for the well being of his simple neighbors and his passionate fury at how the naivete of Creed Procter has been exploited.
In Kings of the Earth, author Jon Clinch weaves a sensitive story of how three brothers living in quiet, albeit dirty, simplicity can be manipulated by the modern world. Narrator Richard Poe then leads the cast of talented actors as they give depth and personality to the books small town folks, the lives they chose for themselves, and their confrontation with the grit and grime of reality.
    Critic Reviews:
To read a book by Jon Clinch is to enter an emotional mineshaft, a place where the darkness is profound and menacing yet lures you on with the promise of untold treasure.

    Publisher's Summary:
Half-sisters Cassie and Peck could not be more different. Cassie is a journalist with her feet firmly planted on the ground; Peck is an actress with her head in the clouds. In fact, the only thing they seem to have in common is their inheritance.
Fool's House is a broken-down home in the Hamptons left to Cassie and Peck by their Aunt Lydia, a house that she decreed they must share. But Cassie and Peck can't afford the place, and they can't agree on what to do with it. Plus, along with the house, they've inherited an artist-in-residence and self-proclaimed genius named Biggsy who seems to bring suspiciously bad luck wherever he goes. Cassie and Peck try to figure out their Aunt Lydia's puzzling instructions to "seek the thing of utmost value" in the house, but as summer comes to a close, they seem no closer to coming to a decision.
The Summer We Read Gatsby is filled with fabulous parties, tempting romances, eccentric characters, and insider society details. It's a sparkling novel that showcases Danielle Ganek's pitch-perfect sense of style and wit.
    Editorial Reviews:
If you were excited to see both Sex and the City movies no matter what the critics said, then Danielle Ganek's second novel is for you. A wry but uplifting tale of two women who inherit a house from their crazy aunt, The Summer We Read Gatsby is a little like sending Kristin Davis on a mission of self-discovery in South Hampton with only Kim Cattrall for support. Voicing their sisterly hijinks is Justine Eyre, winner of two Earphones Awards, who is quite capable of portraying all the upturned noses and spilled martinis it takes to tell this story.
When judgy and uptight ex-pat Cassie is called stateside to handle her Aunt Lydia's estate, she is forced to negotiate it with her half-sister Peck, whose penchant for overusing the dozen words she knows in French is matched only by her desire to become an actress. Off to the Hamptons they go, to Fool's House, where the late Lydia's will cryptically instructs them to "seek the thing of utmost value". They find a safe that may or may not open, lose what may or may not be a very early Jackson Pollock painting that can help them afford to keep the house, and run into old boyfriends that may or may not make suitable husbands.
Along for the ride, of course, are two hilarious gay neighbors and a mysterious artist-in-residence. One Brit, one Scot, and one motorcyclist all of whom Eyre has no trouble expressing with both the appropriate accent and the appropriate level of campy charm aid the girls as they each try to salvage their sense of self in the chaotic legacy Lydia left behind for them. Cassie keeps the sarcasm at a steady drip while Peck piles on etiquette for the glamorous. And all the characters are obsessed with Fitzgerald's classic novel, The Great Gatsby, each in their own ridiculous way.
Still, there is a light touch here. What keeps the narrative grounded is that Ganek herself is an ex-pat who did time in New York's art world, so her observations largely remain astute. What keeps the narration grounded is that Eyre is willing to use her Canadian acting chops to paint a deeper portrait of the people fueling these decadent garden parties.

    Publisher's Summary:
This emotional debut by Randy Susan Meyers tells of two sisters torn apart by domestic tragedy. When her mother throws her father out, young Lulu is told never to let him in again. But Lulu disobeys, and the consequences are heartbreaking. Lulus mother ends up killed, and Lulu and her sister Merry are orphaned. Now, as the sisters grow into adulthood, they find the ghosts of their past are difficult to outrun.
    Critic Reviews:
First novelist Meyers draws on the eight years she worked at a batterer intervention program. Much like Janet Fitch's
    White Oleander or Jacqueline Mitchard's
The Deep End of the Ocean, her book takes readers on an emotional roller-coaster ride. Readers, get out your handkerchief and prepare to care. (
    Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent drama
Compelling drama that instantly captures the reader's attention. Meyer's artfully crafts the lives of two young sisters as they experience the ultimate tragedy related to domestic violence and betrayal. The author takes us through their life experiences after the tragedy and their individual coping and healing processes into adulthood. A wonderful testament to the power of love.
    You won't put this down...
Meyers has gone far beyond the traditional take on domestic abuse, examining the relationship between abuser and abused. Rather, her debut novel examines what happens to the other survivors, the children. How do you grow up being know as "the murderer's daughters? How does that affect the next 30 years of your life? How do two sisters, Merry & Lulu, take care of each other while taking care of themselves? Once you hear that one of them open's the door and lets their father in, you are in for a roller coaster ride of emotions and insights that will grip you and keep you thinking, "what if" , "if only." and, "wow!" Her descriptions, beginning with the "no macaroni necklace - wearing mama" will make you both laugh and cry.
    Loved it!
What did you love best about The Murderers Daughters?
    The relation between the sisters.
What did you like best about this story?
    The characters.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The end when the youngest sister was getting ready to have dinner with her Dad in her new apartment, and the fact that in their own way each character eventually found closure with the past.
    Any additional comments?
    Great story, and very tragic.
I think I missed the point
In a nutshell: Dad kills Mom, badly injures younger sister, older sister too late to get help and blames herself.
The rest of the book is a series of vignettes in the sisters lives spanning 30 years, demonstrating how the tragedy has impacted their lives as children and adults.
Not a bad story, but I felt like something was missing most of the way through. On the whole I was bored.
Things got a little interesting in the last of the book, but that just made the long middle-part seem even longer and more drawn out. Where was the focus? On the minutia of their lives, or the aftermath of the actiony-bits at the end of the book?
I finished the book feeling like missed the point.
    What a heartfelt story
What did you love best about The Murderers Daughters?
How strong lulu and merry's bond was. No matter if they were getting along or at each other's throats they still remained family.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Lulu.
