    Read it instead
Narrator makes an okay story impossible to listen to. This isn't Ms. Phillips best book.
    Not one of her best
Usually love everything from her. This does not fit that profile.
    The Heartbreaker
The narrator makes a farce of all the female characters. I would rather he read the entire book in his normal voice than ruin it by attempting to imitate female voices.

    Deeper than it looks
If you could sum up Casting Off in three words, what would they be?
Thoughtful, interesting, & a good story
What did you like best about this story?
I like the way the author mixes the thoughts of the two main characters with the present day situations - you feel like you are in their heads & seeing what is tormenting them. I have read this book before & I always root for the main characters to find peace!
    Which scene was your favorite?
When Becky finds all of the sweaters in Shaun's house.
If you could take any character from Casting Off out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    Shaun!
    Any additional comments?
This book is not just for knitters. Lovers of Ireland, family, & community will enjoy it too!
Had to read this for class
The performance was solid, but the actual story was very dull and boring. Do not recommend

    Title: The Angel's Game
    Author: Carlos Ruiz Zafón
    Narrator: Dan Stevens
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-01-09
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 27 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Like a slow poison, the history of the place seeps into his bones as he struggles with an impossible love. Close to despair, David receives a letter from a reclusive French editor, Andreas Corelli, who makes him the offer of a lifetime. He is to write a book unlike anything that has existed - a book with the power to change hearts and minds. In return, he will receive a fortune, perhaps more. But as David begins the work, he realises that there is a connection between this haunting book and the shadows that surround his home.
Set in the turbulent 1920s, The Angel's Game takes us back to the gothic universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, the Sempere & Sons bookshop, and the winding streets of Barcelona's old quarter, in a masterful tale about the magic of books and the darkest corners of the human soul.
    Members Reviews:
    Fantastic narration and story!
Where does The Angel's Game rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It is one of my favorite books I've ever read
What other book might you compare The Angel's Game to and why?
The other of that kind might be a "Master and Margarita" by Bulgakov.
What about Dan Stevenss performance did you like?
    One of the best narrations
    Very bad book
Forget about Shadow of the Wind, which was outstanding book. Angel's game is indeed trash, especially the ending.
    The pre-shadow
The author spoke recently on BBC radio about there being 4 interlocking stories planned in the Shadow of the Wind series. Here is the second and it continues the mood of the first: of a rambling and brooding Barcelona peopled by Peakesque characters who are at once both ugly and beautiful, repellent yet beguiling.
The line between reality and the supernatural blurs a little more in this second book that charts a writer's history a couple of decades before the Shadow of the Wind. We meet up with old friends and encounter new heroes and villains.
It is just as powerful as Shadow, if not quite as wonderful, and let's us see further, both into the depths of Zafon's imagined old Barcelona and the duality and complexity of the human spirit. Evil and love swirl in a dance of chance or purposed misfortune and opportunity ? one is never sure.
If you loved Shadow, you must listen t this too. If you haven?t read Shadow, then read that first before coming here but then come straight here.
    Fantastic writing
Beautiful, beautiful! You do need to have read "The Shadow of the Wind" before reading this, but both books are wonderful and well worth the time.
The author has a superb way of writing, and although I preferred the reader who did "Shadow" I thought this reader was quite good. He captured the atmosphere of the piece very well.
I did feel that the ending was a little confusing because I did lose track slightly, but that might have been my fault. I hope that the real identity of "The Boss" will be explored further in the other books in the series.
The sheer quality of the writing made this spellbinding and I will be listening to it again soon.
    Great story! Leaves you thinking
I was a huge fan of The Shadow of the Wind, and this book is no disappointment. The tale provides some interesting back story to its predecessor, with the Sempere and Son's bookstore and the cemetery of forgotten being integral to the plot. That said this is a darker, more supernaturally oriented novel.

    Members Reviews:
    Fun story, good narrator
This book came as a surprise to me. I didn't realize that it would be a mystery, for some reason. But it's more than a mystery--it's a fun character story where we get to know the main character after she's dead. Molly Marx was an interesting woman--creative, loving, and, perhaps a little naive. I wish I'd known her before she was gone. Fun story.
    Very enjoyable listen
Entertaining. Held my attention. I gave the performance 2 stars because it was grating to hear the narrator butcher all of the Jewish words.
    Loved this book
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I liked it very much. The narrator was terrific.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Molly was my favorite character, of course. I also liked her friend Brie.
Which character as performed by Tanya Eby Sirois was your favorite?
She did a great job with all of them. She made me like Molly, Luke, Annabelle, Brie and Molly's parents. Made me not like Barry, Kitty, and especially Stephanie!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The moments when Molly watches Annabelle from above.
    Any additional comments?
Really liked this book. Hope to find other things by this narrator and this author.

    Everybody has to make choices.
    Some might break you.
For seventeen-year-old Mia, surrounded by a wonderful family, friends and a gorgeous boyfriend decisions seem tough, but they're all about a future full of music and love, a future that's brimming with hope.
But life can change in an instant.
A cold February morning . . . a snowy road . . . and suddenly all of Mia's choices are gone. Except one. As alone as she'll ever be, Mia must make the most difficult choice of all.
Gripping, heart-rending and ultimately life-affirming, If I Stay will make you appreciate all that you have, all that you've lost - and all that might be.
    Members Reviews:
    Decisions
    Stay or Go?
In the blink of an eye, Mias life has changed. All her decisions in life have been stripped down to one. Its the most important decision she will ever make in her life and as she lies unconscious on her hospital bed, sorting through memories, only she can make the ultimate decision.
    Live or die?
Get your tissue box ready for this one! What an emotional and yet beautiful story. I must admit to being a little skeptical with the out of body point of view of Mia, but it was surprisingly well done and nicely offset by the flash backs.
I truly enjoyed the characters in this novel, and particularly, the dynamics of Mias hippie family. The little descriptive touches of clothing and quirks really did it for me, as did the incorporation of music into the character development and storyline.
On a deeper level, I was forced to think about the choices we make in life, what really matters and how ultimately, only we can decide what happens to us.
I did feel that the story was a little too short but this is a sure sign of a gripping, well-written, emotive story.
If I Stay, Hopefully not though...
What would have made If I Stay better?
Mia, the main character, and to be honest, ever character was way to perfect. Everything about her life was meant to make you say "Oh, what a perfect life! What a lucky Girl", how ever that's not what it feels like. It felt like I was listening to a story about a stepford wife of a teenager and her "Hip", "Cool" and other buzzwordy parents.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Sometimes Kirsten Potter takes the reading to a weird level, she put quite a lot into this as you can tell, however there are some points where I couldn't tell if she was really crying reading the book aloud or if she was really getting into character, either way, it can be kind of tone-breaking if she's deciding the "sad" parts for you. Also, she does some odd voices, also sometimes character breaking.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I don't actually think I could give the story any redeeming qualities, this is the first book I've read/listened to in a long while that I didn't at-least appreciate the story of. The reader, Kirsten Potter, was okay as long as she wasn't getting too into it, or she wasn't putting on accents however I think those are personal gripes, so she was atleast a somewhat redeeming factor, though, I'm not sure how many people would listen to a book for a narrator.
    Any additional comments?
Over all, if your interested in the Movie that's coming out soon I'd suggest waiting for the Movie, because I cannot see this book helping you decide to go see it.

I was disappointed the first few minutes of listening to the book, but quickly changed my mind. It isn't an action-packed page turner, but enough is going on to keep you interested. A few of the conversations in the book made me think. That is what I appreciated about this story. This book was very well-written and had a purpose.
    An audible must have!
This book was excellent. The story line kept me looking forward to my daily listen as I drove to work. The characters seem to come to life as the narrator told the tale. Excellent listen.

    Title: Owls Do Cry
    Author: Janet Frame
    Narrator: Heather Bolton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-31-08
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 20 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Owls Do Cry is Janet Frame's first novel. She describes her idea behind it in the second volume of her autobiography:
"Pictures of great treasure in the midst of sadness and waste haunted me and I began to think, in fiction, of a childhood, home life, hospital life, using people known to me as a base for main characters, and inventing minor characters"
Regarded by many as one of the best New Zealand novels published, Owls Do Cry forms a loose trilogy with her two subsequent novels, Faces in the Water and The Edge of the Alphabet.
    Editorial Reviews:
This poignant and semi-autobiographical debut novel from New Zealand author Janet Frame created a sensation when it was first published, in 1957. With gorgeous but often experimental writing and a plot featuring death, mental illness, and institutionalization, Owls Do Cry was frequently seen as too grim at the time it appeared. Here, performer Heather Bolton's warm, sensitive narration counterbalances the difficult subject matter and provides a compelling listen for a classic thats full of original images and intense, poetic prose.

    Title: 'Tis the Season
    Author: Lorna Landvik

Length: 3 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-28-08
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Heiress Caroline Dixon has managed to alienate nearly everyone with her alcohol-fueled antics, which have also provided near-constant fodder for the poison-pen tabloids and their gossip-hungry readers. But like so many girls-behaving-badly, the 26-year-old socialite gets her comeuppance, followed by a newfound attempt to live a saner existence, or at least one more firmly rooted in the real world.
As Caro tentatively begins atoning for past misdeeds, she reaches out to two wonderful people who years ago brought meaning to her life: her former nanny, Astrid Brevald, now living in Norway and Arizona dude ranch owner, Cyril Dale. While Astrid fondly remembers Caro as a special, sweet little girl left in her charge, Cyril recalls how he and his late wife were quite taken with the quick-witted teenager Caro had become when she spent a difficult period in her life at the ranch as her father was dying.
In a series of e-mail exchanges, Caro reveals the depth of her pain and the lengths she went to hide it. In turn, Astrid and Cyril share their own stories of challenging times and offer the unconditional support this young woman has never known. The correspondence leads to the promise of a reunion, just in time for Christmas. But the holiday brings unexpected revelations that change the way everyone sees themselves and one another.
At once heartfelt and witty, 'Tis the Season bears good tidings of great joy about the human condition - that down and out doesn't mean over and done, that the things we need most are closer than we know, and that the true measure of one's worth rests in the boundless depths of the soul.

    Email Adventure
Lorna Landvik is a GREAT author to read aloud with a friend. It was slow going to begin this book, but my listener and I struggled on, not being able to connect the characters in this unusual format, all emails. But we are so glad we persevered because we fell in love with Caro Dixon, just as we have with ALL her protagonists, and we await each new book of Lorna's, as we've read and loved them all.
    Really Enjoyed It!
    Very well-written and entertaining.
    very boring!
I am usually a huge Lorna Landvik fan. Loved all her other books, but "Tis the Season" was one of the most boring books I have ever read. I was very disappointed when I was reading this. I hope she comes out with another good one soon. I haven't seen her write any books lately.
    Good read and laughs!
Love her writing. She keeps me laughing!
    I want more!
I have been a lover of Lorna Landvyk's novels for years and can't believe I missed this one. It was sweet and poignant and over way too soon.

    I wasn't sure at first...
Would you listen to Daughter's Inheritance again? Why?
Yes. Although it seemed a bit slow for the first half of book one, I think it was because it had to show all the various characters in order to understand the book. I knew that it was highly rated so I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. Nice series.
Best Book I've heard in a while
The twist & turns in the book are really good. I couldn't wait to get back in the car & hear more!
    Great story, but unsatisfactory ending.
Would you listen to Daughter's Inheritance again? Why?
Yes. It was an interesting story with well defined characters. I only wish that the ending felt more like an ending. I now realize there are two more books in the series and hope that they will more completely conclude the main story of this book.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed the descriptions of the time period and society as well as the characters and their strength.
What about Linda Stephenss performance did you like?
She did a good job distinguishing the various characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, yet that is not possible in my life.
    Any additional comments?
I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.
    Good story dreadful narrator
I'm listening to this story and it's lovely but the narrator is very annoying. Almost sounds robotic or computer generated - very clipped speech patterns which makes it quite disconcerting to listen to.
